Hi all
apologies if this question has been asked a million times before.
I have recently purchased the game and am fully patched and PCM databased up to speed.
Before I jump into a career I just had a quick question about developing young riders. It's been a couple of years/instalments since I last played the game.
Anyway, how does the scouting/signing young riders system work?
In my first season, if I have a couple of free spaces in my squad would I be better off signing a couple of free agents to make up the numbers or would I be better to use the scouting system to scout and sign a couple of young riders?
Cheers |

I think, that you find the best young riders, by waiting for the first results from the under 23´s! And then offer contracts to the best under 23´s |

It depends how long you want to play the career. Although you can set the development speed of the young riders, generally it will take longer for young riders to become useful.
So if you need a good mountain helper, rather look for a free agent. Good databases like the expansion pack should also include some good young free agents which are real cyclists compared to the generated young talents.
Young riders are cheaper, consider offering them a three years contract. Even if they are worthless, firing them will not be too expensive. |

I think that since PCM 14 it's not possible anymore to sign the free agents as you start career (the first days of January), you'll have to wait for the 1st of July, so you might take this into account before you start a career.
If you prefer signing U23s, then you'd better wait for the U23 results as the scouting part of PCM 14, as in the previous years, is totally useless and worthless.

Cheers guys. Guess I'll keep my eye on the under 23 results
So if I sign an under 23 rider in that way will they join my squad straight away or at the end of the season? And can you see their stats before you sign them? I seem to remember on the older versions the under 23 riders would be ranked in the results but you couldn't see their stats at first.

I'm pretty sure he'll join your squad at the beginning of August if you tick 'trainee' on the offer, you can only see your stats if you 'monitor' them with a scout before signing, which shows the stats one at a time and may take some time.

I second all that. If you tick the trainee box when signing an U23 rider - which you can do from the 25th of July - they will join you on the 1st of August.
And yes, to know their attributes you have to scout them, which is a hassle and takes forever. 70 days or so of monitoring a single rider with one scout to discover all his current stats. Cyanide really needs to change this, but it's been that way for years. |

Thanks all.
It seems similar to what I recollect from the previous games I've played.
Do the scouts still give you useless stats first such a the cobble stat of a climber or the mountain stat of a sprinter?
I'm assuming you need free spaces in you squad to be able to sign any young riders at all?

They join the squad on the 26th October IIRC, but you can sign them as trainees and they will come to your squad on 1st August. And no, I think that you can see their stats after you sign them but not before unless you use a talent scout that as I said remain worthless as it will take 2 weeks to know a single stat, that will never be the right one obviously. The first one in PCM 13 always was Resistance that was useless, in PCM 14 will most likely be a backup stat once again. That's the most frustrating part of the game...

Yes, it takes a while to scout the stats but at least the numbers are correct. So if you know how to read the stats, you can estimate their potential.
But if you only start scouting the stats after you have seen a rider in the U23 rankings, you will not be able to see the important stats before another team has signed him. |
