Relay, effort, maintain or attack? A n00b's question

Hi guys, just like I wrote in the career thread, I've just started my 3rd season (2016) with Sky. After two seasons in 'normal' decided to turn to 'hard' mode. So things that worked on normal no longer do.
I got onde good example that happened yesterday playing Strade Brianche and I would like your advice on how to approach this specific situation:
I was always controlling the race and Bardet and Vichot were my guys for the win. As Betancur launched an attack they followed and along with another rider (don't remember who) formed a 4 guys group in the front (2/3 minutes). So with 2 guys in the front I thought that the race was mine. As Vichot has acc 80 and is faster then Bardet I put Bardet on 80 effort (trying to prevent any attack from the other two) and Vichot maintain at 82. 2K from the finish line Betancour attacks, the other guy follows and Vichot could not deliver. What could be the best way to tackle this situation?

It can be a tough situation, I think you were doing it right, but when in the break, you should have told Vichot to follow Bentancur (or if the command doesn't work from the distance, pause it when he attacks and do follow attack), while Bardet relays with the other riders, this means that Vichot doesn't have to work while Bardet may have to do less.

So you raised the difficulty and now you wonder why it is not as easy as before?

Have you read the post, Lachi? I asked for advice on a very specific situation, I'm not wondering about the effects of the change in difficulty.
