It's a hot, windy day in Burgos to kick off the tour.
The oddsmakers put Vitoria, Rowe, and Fernandez as the favourites taking into consideration the small ramp that leads up to the finish.
Two brave men create the breakaway of the day 10kms in.
Lehtinen
Orbe
The peloton is content to let them go. They have a 4'45" lead at the cat. 3.
Orbe takes the 6 points over Lehtinen who gets 4.
Bajadali is the only rider in the peloton to attack to get the remaining 2 points for 3rd place.
Orbe starting to get greedy. He out sprints his Finnish counterpart at the first of three checkpoints.
Serebriakov is the only rider in peloton interested in take 3rd place at the first sprint point. The breakaway duo leads by 4 minutes.
It's the same order for the 2nd sprint point:
1. Orbe
2. Lehtinen
3. Serebriakov
Although pre-race favourite Rowe does contest Serebriakov for 3rd. Wasted energy or warming up his legs?
Lehtinen is sick of getting beat and finally gets around the Spaniard at the 3rd sprint point with 63kms to go.
3rd again goes to Serebriakov with Rowe on his back wheel.
The chase is on, 20kms to go. The leading duo has a gap of 1'25" and dropping fast. If they can make it to the last cat. 3 climb quickly though they might have a chance to hold on. A whole combination of teams are helping to reel them back in. No one team is doing the bulk of the work.
The breakaway is swept up as they hit the cat. 3 climb, 9kms from the finish. It's also the same climb the stage will finish on. Will anyone take the risk and make a move here?
No. Therefore the hard workers on the front of the peloton take the opportunity to claim the KoM points.
1. Avetisyan (6)
2. Mager (4)
3. Bakhin (2)
No real organization as Mager loops the peloton back around on the downhill to tackle the short climb one more time to determine a winner.
Plenty of punchy sprinters and GC climbers in the first few positions.
Who comes to the front and takes control of this race?
2.7kms to go and two teams take control.
Joeaar Raim Hansen Khatuntsev Saramotins Serebriakov Vitoria De Ketele Iglinski Fernandez Rowe Rodrigues
As we get ready to make the turn back on the climb Rowe, Brammeier, and Rodrigues are losing contact to the lead group of 10.
Both of Serebriakov's leadout men leave him out to dry with a kilometer left. Putting Saramotins in a perfect position if he can hold off the Vitoria and Fernandez behind him.
What a second! His leadout man Hansen is going for glory!
He is leaving Saramotins and the rest of the group in the dust.
Evonik could be looking at a 1-2 to start the tour.
Vitoria and Fernandez are giving one last dig but it looks like they will only be fighting for 3rd place.
Or maybe not! Vitoria finds another gear and is tracking down
Saramotins in the final meters.
Serebriakov and Iglinski are also closing the gap and squeeze past
Fernandez.
Hansen barely hangs on! He made the right decision to go for it and he is rewarded with a new yellow jersey to slip on tomorrow.
Vitoria last ditch effort was almost enough but he at least stops Evonik from getting a 1-2 as Saramotins takes 3rd.
Behind the podium spots it's Iglinski with a strong start although he probably would have preferred a few bonus seconds for his efforts. Rodigues storms back on the climb to take 5th. Saramotins and Fernandez fade to 6th and 7th.
The top 10 is completed with Joeaar, Rowe, and Khatuntsev.
Orbe gets to pull on polka-dots in his home race and moves up into 2nd overall because of the sprint bonuses while his breakaway partner Lehtinen was dropped.
A few other noteworthy names were also dropped mainly due to bad positioning.
De Greef
Rojas Villegas, Esquivel
