It's a hot, windy day in Burgos to kick off the tour.

The oddsmakers put i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mlj.png Vitoria, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tas.png Rowe, and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/eub.png Fernandez as the favourites taking into consideration the small ramp that leads up to the finish.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Vuelta%20a%20Burgos/Stage%201/1.jpg

Two brave men create the breakaway of the day 10kms in.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lin.png Lehtinen
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/eub.png Orbe

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Vuelta%20a%20Burgos/Stage%201/2.jpg

The peloton is content to let them go. They have a 4'45" lead at the cat. 3.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/eub.png Orbe takes the 6 points over i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lin.png Lehtinen who gets 4.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/wwr.png Bajadali is the only rider in the peloton to attack to get the remaining 2 points for 3rd place.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Vuelta%20a%20Burgos/Stage%201/3.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/eub.png Orbe starting to get greedy. He out sprints his Finnish counterpart at the first of three checkpoints.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Vuelta%20a%20Burgos/Stage%201/4.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ano.png Serebriakov is the only rider in peloton interested in take 3rd place at the first sprint point. The breakaway duo leads by 4 minutes.

It's the same order for the 2nd sprint point:

1. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/eub.png Orbe
2. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lin.png Lehtinen
3. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ano.png Serebriakov

Although pre-race favourite i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tas.png Rowe does contest i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ano.png Serebriakov for 3rd. Wasted energy or warming up his legs?

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Vuelta%20a%20Burgos/Stage%201/5.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lin.png Lehtinen is sick of getting beat and finally gets around the Spaniard at the 3rd sprint point with 63kms to go.

3rd again goes to i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ano.png Serebriakov with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tas.png Rowe on his back wheel.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Vuelta%20a%20Burgos/Stage%201/6.jpg

The chase is on, 20kms to go. The leading duo has a gap of 1'25" and dropping fast. If they can make it to the last cat. 3 climb quickly though they might have a chance to hold on. A whole combination of teams are helping to reel them back in. No one team is doing the bulk of the work.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Vuelta%20a%20Burgos/Stage%201/7.jpg

The breakaway is swept up as they hit the cat. 3 climb, 9kms from the finish. It's also the same climb the stage will finish on. Will anyone take the risk and make a move here?

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Vuelta%20a%20Burgos/Stage%201/8.jpg

No. Therefore the hard workers on the front of the peloton take the opportunity to claim the KoM points.

1. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ano.png Avetisyan (6)
2. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/evo.png Mager (4)
3. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ano.png Bakhin (2)

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Vuelta%20a%20Burgos/Stage%201/9.jpg

No real organization as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/evo.png Mager loops the peloton back around on the downhill to tackle the short climb one more time to determine a winner.

Plenty of punchy sprinters and GC climbers in the first few positions.

Who comes to the front and takes control of this race?

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Vuelta%20a%20Burgos/Stage%201/10.jpg

2.7kms to go and two teams take control.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Vuelta%20a%20Burgos/Stage%201/11.jpg

As we get ready to make the turn back on the climb i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tas.png Rowe, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tas.png Brammeier, and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/scl.png Rodrigues are losing contact to the lead group of 10.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Vuelta%20a%20Burgos/Stage%201/12.jpg

Both of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ano.png Serebriakov's leadout men leave him out to dry with a kilometer left. Putting i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/evo.png Saramotins in a perfect position if he can hold off the i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mlj.png Vitoria and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/eub.png Fernandez behind him.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Vuelta%20a%20Burgos/Stage%201/13.jpg

What a second! His leadout man i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/evo.png Hansen is going for glory!
He is leaving i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/evo.png Saramotins and the rest of the group in the dust.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Vuelta%20a%20Burgos/Stage%201/14.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/evo.png Evonik could be looking at a 1-2 to start the tour.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mlj.png Vitoria and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/eub.png Fernandez are giving one last dig but it looks like they will only be fighting for 3rd place.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Vuelta%20a%20Burgos/Stage%201/15.jpg

Or maybe not! i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mlj.png Vitoria finds another gear and is tracking down
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/evo.png Saramotins in the final meters.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ano.png Serebriakov and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mlj.png Iglinski are also closing the gap and squeeze past
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/eub.png Fernandez.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Vuelta%20a%20Burgos/Stage%201/16.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/evo.png Hansen barely hangs on! He made the right decision to go for it and he is rewarded with a new i461.photobucket.com/albums/qq337/jt1109jt1109/yellow_zps6c2eea76.png yellow jersey to slip on tomorrow.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mlj.png Vitoria last ditch effort was almost enough but he at least stops i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/evo.png Evonik from getting a 1-2 as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/evo.png Saramotins takes 3rd.

i898.photobucket.com/albums/ac189/Mresuperstar/2014%20MG%20Reports/Vuelta%20a%20Burgos/Stage%201/17.jpg

Behind the podium spots it's i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mlj.png Iglinski with a strong start although he probably would have preferred a few bonus seconds for his efforts. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/scl.png Rodigues storms back on the climb to take 5th.i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/evo.png Saramotins and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/eub.png Fernandez fade to 6th and 7th.

The top 10 is completed with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/evo.png Joeaar, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tas.png Rowe, and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ano.png Khatuntsev.

i461.photobucket.com/albums/qq337/jt1109jt1109/kom_zps3cc10dba.png Orbe gets to pull on polka-dots in his home race and moves up into 2nd overall because of the sprint bonuses while his breakaway partner i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lin.png Lehtinen was dropped.

A few other noteworthy names were also dropped mainly due to bad positioning.
