Tour d'Algerie - Stage 1
tsmoha
i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Guatemala/14Algerie_1_001_zps03f84651.jpg

The toughest stage awaits the peloton already on the first day here, featuring a challenging climb halfway through the race, as well as some uphill sectors until the final descending kilometres.

Still being rated flat, sprinters like Meyer, Guillén or Forero will fancy their chances today.

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Guatemala/14Algerie_1_002_zps87e654e8.jpg

Three riders went clear early and were allowed a 4-minutes-gap quickly: i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/spr.png Ahmad Zamri (also taking the first sprint), i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/scl.png Sirionnachai and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/eub.png Fernandez.

Heavy crosswinds (up to 50kmh) will add some spice to the race today!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Guatemala/14Algerie_1_003_zps9e08c6f5.jpg

The peloton starts to chase with the gap growing over 5 minutes and still 70km remaining.. Alpina goes for a higher pace on today's toughest climb and there's a first split with 51 riders losing a bit of contact at this point:

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/flg.png Meyer, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ttt.png Vingerling, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/onc.png Guillén and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/esc.png Gavazzi amongst those, who seem to be "shocked" by this efforts from Alpina!

In the meantime, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/eub.png Fernandez took out the KoM-sprint ahead of Zamri and Sirio*** for the polka dot! i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/spr.png Zamri though would also take the second intermediate sprint a few kilometres later.

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Guatemala/14Algerie_1_004_zps1ab6b440.jpg

Good news for Meyer/Vingerling, as the peloton would come together on the descend.. anyway, there are some smaller groups being dropped by a still notable pace, that narrowed the gap to the leading trio to 1'20" with now 19km to go.

Most notable names being dropped now: i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/spr.png Awang, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/esc.png Gavazzi, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mlj.png Gajek, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/del.png Tuulhangai. Those riders won't fight their way back to the bunch.

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Guatemala/14Algerie_1_005_zps5998b17e.jpg

Speaking of fighting: Fernandez and Zamri dropped their former breakaway companion to hold on to a minutes-advantage with 12km remaining.. the wind blows at 63kmh in the meantime, a tough race this is.

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Guatemala/14Algerie_1_006_zps3f99912b.jpg

Too tough for those teams, who still try to narrow the gap, it seems: ONCE and Vontobel with some riders at the front, but the bunch is down by 2'20" with now just 6km to go! This is looking good for the two remaining escapees to hold off the bunch..

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Guatemala/14Algerie_1_007_zps8e10ec7a.jpg

..and even better for Fernandez, who drops Zamri a few kilometres to the line..

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Guatemala/14Algerie_1_008_zps92d81f72.jpg

..to take out this opening stage: i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/eub.png Fernandez wins by 39" on i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/spr.png Ahmad Zamri! Given the latest gap on the peloton, this is definitely a huge step towards an unexpected GC-result.

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Guatemala/14Algerie_1_009_zpsb7025494.jpg

Still ONCE and Vontobel leading the bunch into the final km, but there's no real trains at this point. Seems like the tough conditions made some riders really suffer today..

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Guatemala/14Algerie_1_010_zps51129559.jpg

..and so i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/onc.png Guillén grabs the minor bonifications as today's 3rd, crossing the line 1'56" behind Fernandez though! There was no sign of a true bunch sprint, so he took this podium quite uncontested.

So i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/eub.png Fernandez is the first race-leader and looking at his 2'16"-advantage on Guillén, there's definitely a chance to hold on to yellow til the end. The peloton did struggle today, but thanks to "only" two riders finishing with a notable gap on the best sprinters, there are still some points up for grabs. And of course, anything can happen with still some days to come.
