Some recent posts involving interesting stories about great riders I've never heard of gave me the inspiration to make this thread. There are many riders with lots of potential who didn't quite make the history books (or maybe the books, but not the recognition they deserved).
I thought it might be nice, as a relatively new cycling fan, to dig up some forgotten legends, so not Merckx or Coppi, but try to get some "lost" riders fully appreciated again. Here's an example:

I don't know if he's all that forgotten, but Jean-Pierre Monseré was the 1970 World Champion on the road. He was a Belgian rider, very young and very promising. He died during a race, when a car hit him. If he hadn't died, there's no doubt cycling history would be very different today.

EDIT: I realize this is cycling, but I didn't want to put it in the cycling topic, since it isn't about cycling today.
