Ras de Cymru Stage 4
mb2612
Top  #1 Print Post
Posted on 26-04-2012 22:24
So we hit stage four with the race well and trully shaken up. Di Maggio is a way back, but that should add some excitement if he goes for it. Froome and Flugel are the other favourites, and they also need to make up time.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/cym/cymru085.jpg

3 riders go clear early: Partridge, Stallaert and Scully
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/cym/cymru086.jpg

Partridge jumps clear to win the climb as well, Stallaert is again second.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/cym/cymru087.jpg

4 more riders join the leaders to give us our BotD: Reis, Duyn, Hopman and Von Kleisorgen
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/cym/cymru088.jpg

Partridge is strong enough to win another climb, Duyn and Stallaert are next.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/cym/cymru089.jpg

Hopman wins the sprint from Stallaert and Von Kleinsrgan. THe gap is 7 minutes with 84km to race and the peloton have picked up the pace.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/cym/cymru091.jpg

Partridge rests this climb, allowing Duyn, Reis and Hopman to get the top three.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/cym/cymru092.jpg

The pace causes Stannard to get dropped over the top of the climb
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/cym/cymru093.jpg

With 65km to go Oz have the gap down to 5 minutes and Vanspeybrouck attacks.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/cym/cymru095.jpg

Partridge makes sure he climbs the penultimate climb, to ensure him the jersey tomorrow. Von Kleinsorgen and Scully follow him. 46km to go and the gap is 3'30"
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/cym/cymru096.jpg

Vanspeybruck joins the leaders with 40km to race and the gap at 3 minutes
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/cym/cymru097.jpg

Oz are commiting everything to the chase, they really need to save energy to pull back anyone who attacks late.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/cym/cymru098.jpg

Hopman beats Vanspeybrouck and Spey to the final sprint. The gap is 2'10" with 30km to go.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/cym/cymru099.jpg

Reis attacks as the break close in on the final climb. They have a gap 1'40" with 20km to go, as the drag up to the climb kills all the Aussie TTists legs.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/cym/cymru100.jpg

Duyn, Vanspeybrouck and Hopman lead over.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/cym/cymru101.jpg

Bobridge does an excellent job up the hill, prptecting his third place as much as anything else. The gap is now a minute, and none of the riders will take the lead unless the gap goes out.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/cym/cymru102.jpg

Vanspeybrouck, Duyn and Reis now go clear of their companions
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/cym/cymru103.jpg

Partridge joins the front 3 with ten k left to ride and the gap still at the 1 minute mark, they could stay away.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/cym/cymru104.jpg

The other 4 riders are pulled back with 9km left.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/cym/cymru105.jpg

6.5km to go and the gap is 38". Bobridge has been on the front for about 15km now with next to no help. Oz are really impressing here.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/cym/cymru106.jpg

4km to go and Bobridge is holding the break. As Wolf can't sprint it's not really in their interest to pull them back completely
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/cym/cymru107.jpg

With 2.5km to go Vanspeybrouck is just riding away from the rest of the break
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/cym/cymru108.jpg

It looks like he will hold on
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/cym/cymru109.jpg

And Vanspeybrouck takes the victory. AN excellent mid stage attack by the Belgian.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/cym/cymru110.jpg

The others get swallowed in the sprint and it's Di Maggio who emerges to take second in front of Flugel. I think 12 seconds is the best he could do today, the stage wasn't really condusive to attacks, and he is rubbish on the flat.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/cym/cymru111.jpg

Sano takes 4th in front of Ovechkin, and the Pasamonts and Koren, those names tell you how tough the climbs were today.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/cym/cymru112.jpg

So, an excellent victory for Vanspeybrouck, he even gets an 11 second gap, although he is unlikely to threaten the overall. It does gain him the points jersey though.
