I was consistently making a profit each month for the whole season up until October when the amount season was drawing to a close. How are you suppose to keep a positive balance when you are not making money from racing? I am now having to start the season in some serious debt.

You should check your staff, if these get a to high salary you still can't make a profit of ofc if your squad loan costs are to high. did you instal this?:https://pcmdaily.com/infusions/pro_download_panel/download.php?did=816

It does not matter at all to start with a deficit in the beginning of the season as long as you just make sure to have a positive balance in July.

Once I had a balance of around -500,000€ in the beginning of the year and +500,000€ in the end.

To answer your question:
You could think ahead and consider that you cannot win the same amount of price money every month.
The sponsor income is constant, also the staff and rider wages, therefore it cannot be too hard to figure out how much price money you need so that you can conclude the season with a positive balance. Even more as the game does calculate two forecast values.
