How to Clean the Inside of a Washing Machine ?

I'm moving into a rental situation where the washer & drier are a number of years old.

I've heard there is a product we can use on a washing cycle that will clean mildew etc from the innards of a washing machine. I don't know what that would be but I've heard someone talking about it. Please tell me if you know any such products? Also, I'm guessing you'd put NO clothes for this cycle since the objected is to clean the machine before using it?

And do you recommend anything for the drier as well?
