Racing in a country of your nationality

How much of a bonus do you get for racing in a country of your nationality? Does it effect stats or morale?

I read somewhere it would be a 1% bonus.

Playing the game I noticed Scarponi Noicentini and Nibali are very strong in the Giro, almost impossible to beat. My GC Rider is Robert Gesink and even fully pimped for the Giro, with climb maxed out at 84 and form 97 he still runs behind quite a bit, same goes for Contador, Sleck and Evans...
