It's time for the 2 final hilly Italian CT classics; Milano - Torino and Giro dell'Emilia. M - T is a C1 race, while Emilia is the penultimate HC race of the season. Both are loaded with top riders.
Milano - Torino
The race with only one hill and a flat run-in. We've had a few similar races, and in their cases, they weren't decided on the hills, but in the sprint or the flat run-in. Last year, the race was won by Ignatiev, who attacked away on the flat part. He's here again, looking for a last win this season.
Again, a very loaded field. Ricco, Gilbert, Ponzi, Pozzato, Ginanni, Efimkin, ... So, the usual. From last years result, we can see that a huge group sprinted for second place behind Ignatiev. If everything sticks together this year, then Pozzato has a good shot of taking this in the sprint. Although, a rouleur like Gilbert might just ride away on the flat like he did back in Philadelphia. If the race gets decided on the hills, then Ricco and Ginanni have the best shot, probably with Gilbert and Ponzi tagging along.
So, possible top 5:
| 1. | Philippe Gilbert | | 2. | Riccardo Ricco | | 3. | Simone Ponzi | | 4. | Francesco Ginanni | | 5. | Filippo Pozzato |
Gilbert has a very good shot at the win, with the downhill and flat run-in. Ricco is riding on home soil, so if he comes over the top with Gilbert he might be able to stay with him. Ponzi is a good choice with his sprinting ability. Although Wiggle have the strongest squad, i only put one of their riders in the top 5. I foresee leaderships issues. Ginanni will finally get a top 5, and Pozzato in a sprint from a second group?

Giro dell'Emilia
The most prestigious hilly classic in the Continental Tour. Last year this race was still Pro Tour and was won by Damiano Cunego. Only a few riders present now, were there last year aswell. Most notable; Monfort, Claeys, Bertagnolli, Nocentini.
The absolute favorite for this race, has to be Riccardo Ricco. Skill-wise he's almost an identical copy of Cunego, add to that a home-soil bonus, and you got a recipe for succes. However, there is more then one rider taking the challenge of stopping Ricco. The calvary is being led by Stefan Schumacher. Other big names include Gilbert, Ginanni, Pozzato. Another factor might be the many outside favorites. If one of them attacks earlier on, will anyone be willing to chase it down?
Prediction:
| 1. | Riccardo Ricco | | 2. | Stefan Schumacher | | 3. | Simone Ponzi | | 4. | Philippe Gilbert | | 5. | Francesco Ginanni |
Speaks for itself, the strongest riders are most likely to end on the top 5 spots. Can Schumacher and Gilbert withstand the force of the Italians or will the Italians dominate the race?

Has any continental team fielded such a vastly awesomely in depth squad before? Especially for a non-favourite?

rjc: Should be interesting to see how that makes the team race. Three or four of em in the top ten would be a good result of course. More likely two in top ten and then three between positions 10 and 20.
Gotta add this - possible revenge mission for Riccardo Ricco for non selection for worlds?

Good courses for Gilbert and a strong support team for Emilia so another HC win would be great. |

Italian National Champs would be a better one for the revenge mission of Ricco, imo.

I was looking forward to that one. He was second there last year, so it's possible.

Emilia was a good race last year - Torino less so.
Expect Ricco to do very well in both races. |

Might be mixing up Torino with another race, but the way I remember it was that it was one of those silly hilly races were the 'pack' stopped chasing on the downhill. |

And specially for rjc, i added 2 screenshots for the final k .
Happy with this victory and looking good for Emilia, as this should have been a less ideal race.

I won't make any comments. I might get kicked outta the man game.

EDIT:
Although, i write my previews before i go play the races, i was actually foreseeing something like this. I don't get though, why Ignatiev didn't do anything at all. It would have made much more sense if Ponzi went with the first wave, and then Ignatiev went alone on the moment Ponzi went.

I was more referring to a certain managers rider winning Although in this circumstance, it is certainly expected. Plus I am actually happy with 3rd considering the depth of talent in the race. |

In this case, i'll quote you:

I had thought of bringing out the old style reporting, I won't be taking the British or Italian champs though, far too likely to click "replay stage" over and over again until I won them both
(That IS a joke btw, I never have, or will, replay stages to get results)
And like you said, Ricco is favorite in every hilly classic around. Even more if it's an Italian classic.
