Tour of Ireland Stage 1
mb2612
Top  #1 Print Post
Posted on 02-02-2011 08:57
Welcome to the first stage of the tour of Ireland, this, as with all the other stages is flat, and this tour will in all likelyhood come down to bonus seconds. Favourites for the day are Rowe, Vaitkus and Swift. That said, the continental tour hasn't really shown many organised sprints recently so we will have to wait and see
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/eire/PCM0001.jpg

The wind is over 70km/hour as we set off, so expect splits in the peleton, also, for more fun, it's raining

5 riders break away early: Holmkvist, Bandle, Veilleux, Malori and Kennaugh
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/eire/PCM0035.jpg

Holmkvist beats Veilleux and Brandle to the first sprint
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/eire/PCM0036.jpg

Veilleux gets his own back as he takes the frist climb, Kennaugh and Brandle are next
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/eire/PCM0037.jpg

Holmkvist gets the seconds sprint as well, this time Brandle takes second ahead of Veilleux
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/eire/PCM0038.jpg

Malori gets the second climb, although Veillex's second place will put him in the lead overnight. Brandle gets third
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/eire/PCM0039.jpg

The climb drops a few sprinters, such as Awang, Seidler and Brown, although they would make it back into the peleton
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/eire/PCM0040.jpg

50km to go and the first split in the peleton appears: Wiggle and Bacardi seem to have done best out of it
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/eire/PCM0041.jpg

It's soon pulled together, although Geslin tries to use the confusion to attack
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/eire/PCM0042.jpg

10km later and the peleton splits again, this time a bigger group goes off the front
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/eire/PCM0043.jpg

Bbox and Milka get it back together
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/eire/PCM0044.jpg

30km left and Wiggle manage to pull Rowe clear of the peleton, they take Duret, Wyss and Boonratanthanakorn with them. At this point Geslin is a minute in front of them, with the break a minute further up the road. The peleton is 30 seconds back
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/eire/PCM0045.jpg

Martin pulls back the Wiggle chain
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/eire/PCM0046.jpg

20km to go and the peleton is a long thin line, there is no way they all come in together. The breaks lead is down to just a minute
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/eire/PCM0047.jpg

As the break is caught 32 riders go clear: Chicci, Swift, Goss, Rowe, Casper and Dumoulin are all here
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/eire/PCM0048.jpg

We lose 10 more, including Chicci
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/eire/PCM0049.jpg

10km to go and Me and Bacardi are pushing this hard
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/eire/PCM0050.jpg

7km to go and Dumoulin is in 2nd wheel, Goss is third, with Swift and Rowe following him
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/eire/PCM0052.jpg

5km to go and the sprinters have dropped back slightly, Goss, Dumoulin and Swift are in 4th,5th and 6th, while Vaitkus is eighth and Capser and Rowe are nearer the back
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/eire/PCM0053.jpg

2.3km and Martin kicks off the sprint, Swift is on his wheel now, with Boucher following him
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/eire/PCM0054.jpg

Swift flies intto a massive lead, then stops sprinting
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/eire/PCM0055.jpg

Rowe moves into second, with Goss on his wheel
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/eire/PCM0056.jpg

Rowe closes on Swift then also stops sprinting, Goss can't believe his luck
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/eire/PCM0057.jpg

Swift realises his mistake and accelerates again, ensuring victory.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/eire/PCM0058.jpg

Rowe holds off Goss for second, while Dumoulin pips Vaitkus to 4th
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/eire/PCM0059.jpg

Abakoumov leads in the peleton at 1'02" however they are all already out of this race
