Rider Roles in 3D

So before a 3D stage you say which riders should be team mates, free, sprinter or the leader, But when you actually play the stage though you can do whatever you want. Do these roles then mean anything for example offer a bonus of some sort to the leader if there are lots of teammates ?

They only mean something in simulation.

As far as I know the leader cannot have a very bad daily form (I think it was max. -3).

Also if you set it then, you can simulate by clicking on the next day avoiding all pre stage menues. (Obviously no tactics are used but in case you have no good sprinter in your roster you can just skip the flat stages)
