Ladder Sprint?

I know this shows my lack of knowledge about the sport, but here in the U.S. you dont hear much about cycling. So the question is: What is the ladder sprint? On the stage editor, you can make a sprint normal, timetrial or ladder.

Also, when adding in a flat finish, you can choose from different types. What is the difference in Flat and Race?
