I can never seem to sustain my man in the breakaway group, anybody got any tips?

I just counter-attack on one of the attacking riders, then I just stay in the break without relaying. At the last third of the stage i put the effort up to 65-70, then I attack with about 20km to go Smile

A lot depends on the profile of the stage and the race situation.

The best stages to try a breakaway are hilly stages. Flat stages usually always end in a mass sprint and in mountain stages (especially mountaintop finishes), the real climbers emerge.

Also, the type of race matters. One-day races are not usually ideal for breakaways. In stage races, I generally try to get into breaks with low placed riders.

When I do get into breaks, I set my rider(s) to relay at 50 until the peloton begins to ride. When the lead begins to decline, I try to adjust my effort to a level where my rider can stay ahead but also out of the red.
