Hopefully Ste enjoyed the race as well, and anyone else who went. I decided to stay clear of Hampton Court Palace area when I chanced upon a brilliant spot. A long straight to see them coming, but standing on the outside of a gradual turn - so all riders hugged the barrier on the other side of the road.

Needless to say, I took photos, and I like them Pfft

Clara Hughes finished 5th in the TT!

She also broke her back and had a fractured vertebrae from a crash in May so to get 5th only a few months after is very good imo.

Jalabert on television last night said he was truly and utterly disappointed at how things went for the French males on the road, both in the RR and the ITT.
In the RR he had Chavanel upfront, but who cannot sprint (and wasn't at his TDF level), so he was satisfied, he blamed Gallopin for trying to play with the big boys but not managing (tried to follow Cancellara : failed - I didn't see it). Démare followed the plan. And Jalabert was pissed he had to take Bourgain, saying Voeckler would have been there, and probably would have felt the race well enough to be in front too. That's only speculating, IMO.

For the ITT, Chavanel got a mechanical somewhere between the first and second intermediate. When he started again Froome overtook him, so his motivation totally vanished, hence his result.

did LLS get overtaken by Cance, or did he hold him off?

edit: no, only finished 4mins down on Cance

for the record, Chavanel beat LLS

Nice pics SN. Noticed the Australian team car with a Kangaroo (or is it a Wallaby) above, that's a nice touch. You seemed to be in great spot where all the riders had to show gritted teeth.

I thought both races were as good as time trials can be, I was on the edge of my seat for the Men's but that is understandable.

In the women's it was quite tight at the beginning, with the Russian early time a difficult benchmark. Pooley beat herself up a bit that she didn't get a medal, I don't think it was a great course for her to be honest. I do think it was a decent course though, cannot recall the Athens one but Beijing was quite tough.

The men's was close at the first check, for a moment I though Tony Martin was close to last years time trial form but the lack of miles in his legs must have been a factor. Froome continues to astound really - I am not surprised that a lot of people think he is suspicious. A real shame for Cancellara that he has had the year he has had with injuries.

Wiggins has had Stephan Roche type of year, but then the four stage race wins were all built on winning the time trials. Paris Nice was arguably the least suitable but Col D'Eze I suppose is a power climb. He and Boonan certainly riders of the year on terms of achievement.

Discussion point: what is Phinney doing basing his whole season on the Olympic time trial? a guy like him really needs to be racing more imo.

Great photos SN. Smile

In response to Smowz's point about Phinney, I think that considering his age it makes sense that he doesn't try and stretch himself too thinly. After all, a Giro stage and a few days in Pink as well as 4th in the Olympic TT isn't bad for a 22 year old.

lokytrew
Isn't Phinney a better prologue rider? He is good at technical stuff while he lacks the speed on the long streets which Martin and Wiggins have.

Yea I mean not everyobdy is Sagan to have 15 wins in a season.Smile

Just a useful link for those like me who really don't follow a lot of track cycling and may not get all the rules - Cyclingnews have got Chris Boardman to explain the rules of each of the events in a brief series of videos:

Chavanel hoped the barriers in front of me on the course before the start yesterday, security shouting at him, he looked completely focused, also behind him was Audrey Cordon, she was also cycling the path behind me looking lost, a number of times, why didn't I not stop them for a photo, god dammit Smile haha

Great photos, mine are fairly poor, with my thumb on he top of them, rushing to take a picture at 200m to go. Was close to taking Menchov of his bike as he kept hugging the barrier going into the final corner, and I had my ipod out trying to take a picture of him, luckily as seen the potential danger and pulled out of taking a photo. Great place to be, brilliant race. My highlight shaking Chris Froome's hand outside his hotel after the race Smile

Britain with a new WR but the Chinese duo with an even better time a minute later. Great start for the track races.
