Tour of South Africa Stage 2

The first of two hilly stages, though this one shouldn't be too hard. Four times up the same steep climb, including once just over 10km from the finish, will be the main difficulty. However, a little ramp up to the finish will allow the punchier riders to beat the sprinters.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0002-65_zps26ac3b31.jpg
Yesterday, Hoogenboom tried to get away for over ten kilometres, today it took Oget just one attack! The American was joined by three compatriots and Beukeboom of De Rijke. The five rode well together, building up a five minute lead on the peloton.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0003-60_zpsd1b76b02.jpg
With lots of KOM points on offer, Oget was using his attacking style to beat his breakaway companions to the top of the climbs. He won three of the four climbs to ensure that he would be wearing the spotty jumper tomorrow. The team's first ever jersey in the bag.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0004-67_zps7e194bd1.jpg
With the peloton gaining fast and the polka dot jersey in the bag, Oget decided to go for a long solo attack with over thirty kilometres to go. He quickly pulled out a minute on the rest of the breakaway and went into time trial mode. Even if the attack came to nought, he was getting himself plenty of TV coverage.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0005-63_zpsc9d08445.jpg
Oget was doing brilliantly but he was heartbreakingly caught with the flamme rouge in sight. As the final ramp up to the finish had begun, it was Tiernan-Locke who was trying to gap the rest but he had plenty of riders following him, including Mitch Thompson. Oget punched the handlebars and dropped to the back of a much-reduced peloton.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0006-70_zps6621e7cd.jpg
At the finish, it was the veteran Stefan Schumacher who took the win ahead of his team mate Rasmussen. It was an extremely good day for Denmark as Sky's very own Alex Fischer rounded out the podium by superbly nipping past Tiernan-Locke on the line. A magnificent result! Thompson also made the top ten, with all other Sky Dev riders in the peloton apart from Bakker. A great day was completed when Oget went up to the podium to collect his jersey.

Why don't you use the new Sky 2013 jersey? I guess you're using 2012 DB... but anyway it's a great stroy already... the other riders should be excited watching their brothers on tv...
I know Diego is having a hard time trying to watch them in an internet streaming service because in Colombia international cycling races are hardly broadcasted on tv...

Great result for the team! The KoM + Top3 + Top10. I definitely hope that we can keep the KoM jersey. Wink

Great results again Smile First podium place for the team and KoM jersey. Hopefully we can keep the jersey and get a nice GC result Smile

Thanks for the comments. It was quite annoying to only be beaten by two.. well.. 'riders with a history of cheating' but I'm sure they're clean here. I mean you wouldn't dope to win the Tour of South Africa would you?!

We definitely plan to hold on to the climber's jersey so Oget will be doing a lot of attacking, which is fine by him! Not sure about GC atm because stage six is tough but we'll see.

ps. is there meant to be a rest day after two days or is that just a DB error? Seems a bit strange but again, Oget doesn't mind, seeing as he went really deep on stage two!

cunego59
Really nice results in South Africa so far. I hope you can keep it up.

But how about taking a slightly different jersey than the Sky Pro Team? Like, for instance, the jersey with the Green stripe from the 2011 (?) TdF? Just to make the development team distiguishable.

brewers90
Well, that's a good idea. We won't race against the big boys until the Tour of Britain but I think it's probably a sensible thing to do!

If it's ok with Maddrengen, I'll use the one he made with the green stripe. But we won't wear it until we get back to Europe.

Oh yeah KOTM!!!!!!!

Tour of South Africa Stage 3

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0003-60_zpsbc12e555.jpg

Back to the flat for a relatively easy stage which should see another bunch sprint. A short, steep climb twelve kilometres from the end could tire out the weaker climbers before a rapid assault on the finish line. With the only categorised climb coming just before the end, Oget won't need to go on the attack today.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0001-75_zps3cd4a7e5.jpg
Poor Hoogenboom is trying everything to get into the break of the day here but the peloton just won't let the Dutchman go. Four riders did eventually get away but it was another day in the peloton for Hoogenboom. The four riders in the break were Huizenga, Barrett, Bartko and Alzate.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0002-65_zps9fc63a32.jpg
Again, Vorarlberg and Endura were doing most of the work but MTN did chip in today as they looked to get their sprinter Brown a stage win. As they hit the steep climb, the breakaway was almost caught and the pace was incredible. A few riders lost contact while Huigsloot and Hoogenboom had blown and wouldn't be able to help in the sprint.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0003-60_zps124fdebc.jpg
With five kilometres to go, the final member of the break, Alzate, was within touching distance as the sprinters' teams wound it up. Hammarling was switching from train to train with just Fischer to help him. It would be a miracle if the young Brit could get a top result today.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0004-67_zps1bf09498.jpg
It would appear that Hoogenboom is a bad loser! After being denied the chance to get into the breakaway again, and then struggling to stay in the peloton over the climb, he decided to take everyone out! With the fans at the roadside stunned, he collided with Schafer and then proceeded to take out another twenty or so riders. Fortunately, nobody was badly hurt but Wesley certainly caused a lot of anger amongst his fellow riders today.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0005-63_zpsa8967852.jpg
The sprint was ferociously quick and while McEvoy thought he had added another victory to his stage one performance, he didn't see Brown coming up alongside him, causing the embarrassing celebration. The crowd certainly enjoyed the South African's win. Hammarling once again had to battle after losing Weissinger's wheel near the end, but he finished a great tenth, with Fischer continuing his great race in fifteenth.
