Tour de France - Stages 4 - 6
More racing here!

Stage 4
i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tdf401_zps76688f02.jpg
The final day on the island. I feel like the cast in Lost.

Quite obviously a race for the sprinters. Though nobody expected Bouhanni to take the victory today!

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tdf402_zps22a11497.jpg

But it was also the day of the big gaps. Van Den Broeck lost minutes today, tough sentence.

Stage 5
i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tdf404_zpsb1a7d945.jpg
Even flatter...

It was quite a windy stage, but the peloton kept together mostly.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tdf405_zps747c1608.jpg

Kristoff still thinks he can win a stage here, so he was near the front when the sprinters were getting ready.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tdf406_zps9681a4e4.jpg

He wasn't far off today. A fourth place!

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tdf407_zpsb2653f11.jpg

Stage 6
i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tdf408_zps1392cfa3.jpg
Another hilly stage. Will there be fireworks today?

The breakaway saw many strong punchers, like ex-World Champion Gilbert.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tdf409_zps2c1fc19a.jpg

To my surprise, there were no attacks being prepared. It seems the favorites are aiming their guns on tomorrow instead...

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tdf410_zps4469acb5.jpg

And so it was a victory for someone in the break, Gilbert! Way past his prime, it's great for him to win another stage here. That shows that even when the body gets weaker, some have the mind of a winner and that never gets old.

Tour Talk
A 10th place and two 11th places. In mass sprints? I can only conclude my form is getting along great!

Tomorrow a mountain stage, but not just any mountain stage, the stage has a summit finish on Hautacam, where Luc Leblanc won the first time it was features in the Tour, in the same year he conquered the Rainbow Jersey.

Maybe a sign?

The Hobbit
Interesting stages, not exactly good for Henry, but still I hope he's enjoying the experience.

Tour de France - Stage 7
i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tdf701_zps8dd2f02e.jpg
This is what I've been waiting for! All cards on the table today for the favorites. I woke up an hour early from excitement. My first mountain stage in the Tour de France. This is the reason I became a cyclist!

The Race
We didn't feel like sitting around and wait for someone to attack. We started dictating the pace ourselves, splitting the pack.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tdf702_zpsb95e5ebe.jpg

Even before Hautacam, Valverde and Froome attacked. Not rushing anything, we were close by and closing the gap. We would do it downhill.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tdf703_zpsb52b99f8.jpg

So we did. We formed a front group. Favorites for the GC started looking and Spilak thought he could take advantage of that today!

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tdf704_zpsfba25bf0.jpg

Adrenaline was pumping through my body. I was getting hot for action and I attacked! Van Impe was screaming: DON'T, STOP! But I couldn't resist, I was possessed.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tdf705_zpse84d82b5.jpg

I quickly caught Spilak. There were five of us now. And then something interesting began: a battle of endurance.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tdf706_zps31f03e60.jpg

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tdf707_zpsf3ddcfa5.jpg

The first one to crack was Spilak. 4 left.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tdf708_zpsebdcbb2d.jpg

Valverde attacked again!

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tdf709_zpsa3a70084.jpg

Then there were just 3 of us left. My legs were getting heavy, very very heavy. I never had this much trouble climbing before.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tdf710_zps767b92c9.jpg

Aaarrggghh a terrible cramp as I started the sprint. Gone victory. My legs didn't allow it today.

Tour Talk
Mixed feelings today, but a lot of them! During the climb, I can't explain. It was the best feeling ever. I was doing what I was meant to do, at least that's how it felt for me.

But I have been beaten on a summit finish. I dream of becoming one of the best climbers of all time. Today, I might just be among the top 3. At the age of 23, that is just enough. But I need to get better, a lot!

See you tomorrow,
Henry

The Hobbit
That's a monstrous stage, completed by a monstrous ride from Henry, well done. Only, a different step next time?

Still not even half a minute behind, and his form surely won't be getting worse. Smile

Atlantius
Losing 16 seconds to Froome on a finish like this is quite good I'd say

The Hobbit - I loved playing that stage. Maybe my favorite PCM moment ever, even Pfft different step next time? Ask and thou shall receive!

Dippofix - Peaking for week 3, with 3 consecutive mountain stages at stage 18 - 19 - 20 Wink

Atlantius - It is. Though one day it will have to be the other way around Grin

Whoever is first in the field and awaits the coming of the enemy, will be fresh for the fight; whoever is second in the field and has to hasten to battle will arrive exhausted.

Therefore the clever combatant imposes his will on the enemy, but does not allow the enemy's will to be imposed on him.

Let your plans be dark and impenetrable as night, and when you move, fall like a thunderbolt.

Talk about your killer stages. After this there's a flat one and then we have the rest day. So we will go all-in today!

Yesterday I got a mental beating. I want to be the world's best climber, but I got beaten on a finish uphill. Today I want to show that I have the killer instinct to make my dreams come through. Today I will fight for all I'm worth.

The Race
We had a plan today. The plan was far fetched, risky, in some ways unneccesary. And that's what made it great.

Nerz was part of the breakaway.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tdf802_zps09e61c91.jpg

Before the real action of the stage, I was surprised when Julien Duvivier came riding next to me. I didn't want to argue during the Tour, but he did something else. He congratulated me on my wedding.

Could this be the beginning of making things right?

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tdf803_zps40ba5bf7.jpg

Nerz messed around with his breakaway companions and took the .HC KoM sprint.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tdf804_zpsbd4c7b94.jpg

And then it was time to strike, like a thunderbolt. Surprising friend and foe, commentator and fan, with 70 kilometers left to go, Herklotz and I launched our offensive!

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tdf805_zps369ec2ab.jpg

We forced the enemy to think quickly. Afraid of missing the boat, some did react. Afraid of going too early, others were left behind.

Nerz waited around for us. In the valley, both he and Herklotz gave it 100%. There was no turning back now. Such a risky move so early in the Tour could be deadly, but no glory to those who don't have anything to lose.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tdf806_zpsf37be81c.jpg

Right before the final, very steep, climb, my team mates were burned up. As they professionally used their hand brake, I used my acceleration to start the finale of the race!

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tdf807_zpsc6b6150a.jpg

Very soon, things fell apart. Like yesterday, we formed a small group. Valverde, Froome, Schleck and myself. The numbers 1, 2, 3 and 4 in the General Classification.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tdf808_zpsdf700439.jpg

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tdf809_zpsb98dc21c.jpg

Schleck cracked first! And suddenly it was back to the three of us. You could tell the audience was loving every singly second of it. We were cheered on by thousands of fans. Most of them cheering for the local boy, that would be me!

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tdf810_zps221475f1.jpg

I had a tough moment right before the summit of the climb. I had to leave a small gap, in order not to blow up my legs completely. I had been such a long day already...

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tdf811_zps8f8fd5ea.jpg

But I'm a fighter. I never knew something else.

In the downhill, I came back. They couldn't just get rid of my that easily!

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tdf812_zpsd4747b79.jpg

With a sense of risk, we were reunited.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tdf813_zpsddbfc36e.jpg

A sprint would decide between winner and loser today. I had lost so much energy already, attacking from 70km, attacking again before the final climb, returning in the downhill... I had to play the poker/surprise card here.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tdf814_zpsc60e9b65.jpg

The speed dropped. Nobody wanted to start the sprint first, nobody wanted to lead out another. Quite late, already, I came out the back and started the sprint first!

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tdf815_zps5e4b61f1.jpg

I was dying. My legs felt like they were falling off. Every stroke of the pedal I was just unwinding my legs.

Valverde came dangerously close!

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tdf816_zps5644f54e.jpg

AAAARRRRGGGGHHHH!!

VICTORY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tour Talk
Forget a stage in the Vuelta, forget Paris - Nice, forget the National Road Race Title. This is it. Nothing compares to it.

This is the greatest moment of my professional career, nothing comes even close. I had to give every singly drop of blood and sweat in my body, but I made it. This is what I have worked for all these years. And now that I'm here, I only want more and more! I could so easily get addicted to this feeling. Getting out on that podium, facing my fans, my public...

Now I'm sure.
This is my destiny.
I want to win the Tour de France.

The Hobbit
Banana Banana

What an amazing victory, well raced, well won Smile

Dippofix
Stunning tactics there, really showing who's Boss early on in the Tour. And after 70 kms of attacking still being able to win the sprint and the stage, that's real class! Grin

Jakstar22
Henry is such a boss. Keep it up!

Ian Butler
The Hobbit - Thanks for the double banana Grin

Dippofix - It is class indeed. Unfortunately he is up to Valverde and Froome. Two other bosses Pfft Will be an interesting fight, I think.

Jakstar22 - Will do!

sutty68
Henry has certainly announced his arrival on Le Tour Grin

Hope Van Impe gets the rest of the team to look after you now Wink

24sebaf1
No guts, No glory. Great stage. Deserves a banana Banana

Ian Butler
sutty68 - I think Van Impe is a persuasive man Wink I think France is celebrating out loud right now, with Henry coming here!

24sebaf1 - It was a risky attempt, it was nice to win the stage (even if it's only by 1 dm) Pfft

Real sorry guys, but I have very little time to report on the past three stages.
I'll go over them real quickly!

This stage is not worth losing energy over, so early in the 2nd week. Defend, sit back.

Fortunately, others thought differently. All I had to do was follow. We were putting the pressure on Froome.

The breakaway took the victory of the day, though.

Me and Valverde take back some time on Froome!

Tour Talk
Way to go, Kristoff! That gives our team two stage wins now.
Funny detail, of the 6 mass sprints, I finished 11th on 4 of them so far.

You'll forgive me for being so short on these stages. That has to do with keeping the focus for tomorrow.
I will turn in now and get enough rest.

Tomorrow we climb the Mont Ventoux.
Henry

The Hobbit
That's ok, but let's hope for a lot more than ok tomorrow, win it in style!

sutty68
Alexander Kristoff deserves his stage win after some recently good finishes Smile

God this Tour is close, very exciting to follow Smile
