Race Report
An Post Ras Stage 1

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0001_zpsf21e8448.jpg

The race opens with a fairly easy stage in the North East of the country, finishing in Dundalk. The one challenge is the steep climb of the brilliantly named Long Woman's Grove with thirty kilometres to go. The race should then come down to a bunch sprint. The biggest news of the day, though, was the announcement that An Post had pulled out of the race to concentrate on bigger races elsewhere, stunning the Irish fans.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0001_zps6888e3f0.jpg
After a rapid start to proceedings, where Sutton had tried to get into a breakaway, the race settled down, allowing four riders to get away. These were Canola (Colnago), Keogh (Exergy), Krasilnikau (Chipotle) and Roosen (Jo Piels). These riders soaked up all of the points on offer as they built up a maximum advantage of six minutes on the peloton.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0002_zpsa06057ac.jpg
The peloton was being led by a variety of teams as they began to close the gap to the escapees. Atlas Personal, Optum and Utensilnord were doing most of the work, allowing Endura, who have brought an incredibly strong team here, to save legs, just Partridge doing the work for them. As they reached the second category climb, the gap was down to two minutes to the leaders.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0003_zps319e7c75.jpg
On the climb, the steep and narrow roads caused problems for the peloton, with a massive split causing sixty riders to lose contact, including some of the biggest names here. McEvoy, Cronshaw, Candelario and Zanotti were caught out, as were Jones, Sutton and Bracco for Sky. All of these riders would lose two minutes today, potentially ending their GC chances already.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0004_zpsab768f0e.jpg
With the peloton in disarray and only Endura willing to apply pressure, Sky were told to give it everything with seven kilometres to go and formed a train for Jaquin. Strangely, nobody reacted to it and it became a team time trial for the four guys. Zabala, Thompson and Fischer gave it their all to try to keep the advantage they had gained. Into the final kilometre, Jaquin launched off Fischer's wheel with the peloton still well behind. Could it be...?

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0005_zps8267f430.jpg
YES! What a beautiful sight for everyone in the team as the teamwork paid off massively. Both Jaquin and Fischer were delighted, while Thompson cruised in for third. Amazingly, Zabala just held off Wilkinson to take fourth, but everyone from Diego down lost nearly forty seconds. The yellow, green and white jerseys will be on the shoulders of three different Sky riders tomorrow. Not a bad start!

Team Attack!!! Bracco: pay some attention, you bugger!

Just caught up with the last few reports. Seems like the team is on a roll.

Great KoM win from Fischer, good start in the Series and some classic Team Sky domination in Ireland Grin

Banana Fantastic! It would be great to see more of that sort from Jacquin.

I just checked and it's definitely still on hard Wink

We'll just have to chalk that one down as a lucky day.

Race Report
An Post Ras Stage 2

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0002_zps7a0b42fa.jpg

Stage two is a lot longer than the first one but the one climb comes a lot further from the finish than yesterday, so there shouldn't be any splits in the peloton. Of course, with a long stage and the yellow jersey to defend, it will be a tough day for the team but everybody is understandably upbeat after yesterday's amazing performance.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0001_zps09ebb5ea.jpg
Today's breakaway contained six riders, when it eventually formed after thirty kilometres of aggressive racing. All six were two and a half minutes down on Jaquin, so we were pretty happy to let them go for now. The biggest name in there was Coledan of Colnago but it certainly wasn't a strong group. They worked very well together though, and gained over seven minutes on the peloton.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0002_zps3d58f2c4.jpg
On such a long, miserable day, we were grateful for the help of Endura and Utensilnord to bring back the escapees. The pace was certainly very high though and it looked as though the lads were really struggling. As soon as the gap got below two minutes, we could stop working but the damage had already been done for our team.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0003_zps6df3fd67.jpg
The final rider, Magnier, was caught with just under five kilometres to go as Endura got a monster of a train going for Ian Wilkinson. Their team here is on a different level to everybody else and Thwaites, Blain, Downing and McEvoy were always going to be impossible to beat so every other sprinter just tagged on to the back of them. Jaquin was in this line but the rest of the team were absolutely ruined, even Thompson and Fischer, who hadn't been doing any work!

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0004_zpsba366e94.jpg
And Wilko finished his team's work off with a win that was almost as easy as Jaquin's yesterday. Amore & Vita completed the podium with Colex and Borisov, with Jaquin just climbing into the top ten after being dragged past everyone by a fast finishing Lavery. It was a day to forget for the rest of the team with Ulsterman Jones losing another load of time as he just couldn't deal with the ferocious pace on the flat. Nevertheless, we still have 1-2-3 on the GC, so it could be worse!
