It wasn't too bad a result with six of our riders finishing only 34s off the win
And congrats to Alex for winning the Mountains jersey |

Race Preview
Halfords Tour Series
The Halfords Tour Series started in 2009 and is run every summer all around the UK. The eleven rounds are all criteriums in tight urban environments, starting in Kirkcaldy, Scotland and finishing in mid June in Woking. Most of the rounds are on flat courses but there are some hills which will allow punchers a chance to get away and fight for victory. The final race in Woking has cobbles aswell, really giving this year's edition some variety. None of the rounds are longer than 100km, making the racing extremely hectic, especially with narrow town centre roads and tight corners to navigate. You have to be lucky as well as good to win these races.
*For Rounds 1 and 2
Our team for the first two rounds is led by Hammarling, who has been showing improvements in training and we hope he can have a very strong series. Droochit gets another chance to race in Scotland but these races don't really suit him. The second round in Durham is very difficult with an uphill finish, so Gilbert and Jones will be leading the charge there. Of course, with these races being so close and unpredictable, anything could happen and we have to field a team with numerous options and we feel we have that. |

Race Report
Halfords Tour Series Round 1

A flat start to the series in Kirkcaldy, Scotland. It should end, like most rounds, in a mass sprint but with the races being so short, you never know if a strong attacker will be able to stay away. The competition is primarily based on teamwork, with a prize on offer at each round for the team with the highest placed finish for their top three riders, so it's important for everyone to ride as hard as they can.
The last time we raced in Scotland, we caught a glimpse of the mythical sun, but not today. It was back to more typical Scottish weather with the rain lashing down all day. It didn't make the riders nervous though, with loads of attacks at the start, including Bakker (seen here on the front of the peloton after being caught) and Hoogenboom. None of these got away because An Post were keeping the pace very high.
In the end, the whole field was still together and we only had twenty kilometres to go, so Oget decided to take it on himself to make the race a bit interesting. The American obviously never had much of a chance of succeeding but he quickly gained a minute on the peloton, which was having a brief rest. Maxime was hoping for some assistance with such a long way to go but, despite an attempt from Mombaerts to join him, he was all alone now.
Then, the inevitable happened, the only surprising thing was that it took so long to happen. Wet roads, tight corners and unforgiving barriers took out eighteen riders. The two biggest teams here, An Post and Endura, were badly affected, with the likes of Bellis, Eeckhout, McEvoy, Voss, Thwaites and Blain all coming down or being held up by the crash. Clancy also hit the deck, while Endura suffered a massive blow with Ian Bibby badly injuring himself, ending his entire domestic campaign.
Unfortunately, this chaos didn't cause the peloton to slow with IG Sigma Sport taking over the pace making with the two big teams out of the way. With Oget being reeled in quickly, Sky got to work with a short train of Gilbert, Huigsloot and Hammarling as they hoped for a top result. It was always going to be a tough ask for Johan against the top sprinters on show here, but with some of the best ones out the back, he did at least have a chance.
But it was Bagdonas who took the win, remarkable considering most of his leadout was ten minutes behind! Stauff took second ahead of Franzoi, with Hammarling finishing strongly to take fourth, the line coming just too soon to climb on to the podium. Dean Downing was fifth, with Ian Wilkinson, in eighth, the only Endura rider inside the top 90! In the teams' standings, with Huigsloot 12th and Gilbert 20th, we win the first round! Great ride by the whole team.

That crash had some major names in it!
Nice start to the Tour Series, and nice to see you using the actual method of scoring.

Race Report
Halfords Tour Series Round 2

The riders head straight off to Durham in the North East of England now for the first hilly test of the Tour Series. The main climb is a brute, with the lower sections of it at well over 10% gradients. On the final lap, this climb finishes just 600 metres from the line, so it will clearly be a puncher who wins today. Can anyone stop Bagdonas from making it two out of two?
Unlike the first round, the breakaway was formed very early today as three riders were allowed to build an advantage. They were Keogh (Exergy), Fonte (Efapel) and Retschke (Indeland). Of the three, Retschke was clearly the best over the hills and the others were hanging on. Behind, Gottfried of Nutrixxion had managed to crash on the first lap but he seemed okay.
After a while, Bakker used his time trialling ability to bridge the gap to the front three and, even though he was the worst climber in there, he immediately lifted the pace, and the gap back to the peloton was soon at four minutes. With fifty kilometres to go, An Post and Endura got on the front and started to bring the gap down pretty quickly.
But this high pace didn't put off the attackers as five riders managed to escape and bridge the ever-decreasing gap to the leaders. Pinto and Salgueiro of LA were probably the best riders, joined by Colex (Amore & Vita), Gutierrez (Onda) and Holmes of Raleigh. This group of nine was, predictably, all over the place, with none of the original four wanting to help these fresher, stronger riders, so Bakker bid farewell and disappeared up the road, taking Keogh with him.
Despite a mammoth effort that Keogh couldn't live with, Bakker just didn't have enough and was caught with six kilometres to go as Gottfried, who at the start of the day was kissing the tarmac, put in an attack, which would come to nought. Gilbert was being kept out of trouble right at the front as thoughts turned to the final climb. Jones, Oget and Hammarling were all ready to pounce aswell, while Droochit was feeling amazing today and would certainly be hoping to show his climbing ability on the run to the line.
But none of them, nor indeed any other team, could stop the Lithuanian powerhouse as Bagdonas cruised to the line, never challenged on the final ascent. Two out of two for him and if he does all of the rounds, I wouldn't put it past him to win them all. Gilbert looked like he might get second but faded as Dirk Muller held on for second. But the surprise of the day easily goes to Eddie Droochit, the Scottish climber coming from nowhere to beat Gilbert on the line for a visit to the podium. Oget, Hammarling and Jones completed an amazing day for the team as we extend our lead in the overall standings.

Stage wins are obviously not our best thing, let's just try to win that team ranking!
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Wow, we're doing great on the team ranking!
And nice to see that Wesley 'consistently' keeps finishing 36th

Ha, I hadn't noticed that. It takes a special sort of rider to be able to pick where he wants to finish. |

We're bossing it. It appears I am strong but not as strong as the others when it comes to a sprint like in Lincold GP
Will have to get some training in. |

Race Preview
An Post Ras
The team now travel across the Irish Sea for the eight-day An Post Ras. It is the joint longest race the team will take part in this year, the same as the Tour de Normandie. Unlike Normandie this race actually has some climbing in it, with lots of typical, short, sharp Irish climbs throughout the race. Every stage has at least one categorised climb in it, with a few of them being near the end of the stage, making the racing frantic. The key stage is stage five to Seskin Hill, the final climb being a pretty nasty one. Stages six and seven are also potentially decisive if raced hard enough, with tricky climbs coming thick and fast near the end.
The team here, as usual, has no out and out leader, but a variety of riders who could do well on any given day depending on their form on the day. Jaquin is the team's sprinter and should cope with the hills no problem, whilst Fischer will have his eyes on the tougher stages. Thompson has improved a lot of late but he'll have a problem finding a mountain in Ireland! Bracco will also hope to go well on the tougher stages, and everyone else will hopefully get a chance to go on the attack at some point in the race. |
