Tour de France Stage 17


Today we had the penultimate mountain stage and the last with a summit finish. The final climb was the third HC climb the riders would face today. A day that could be decisive.

With 8 km to go Big Ulle was in front of the peloton and all the escapees were about to be caught.

And with 4 km to go attacks came from Di Luca, Sastre, Rasmussen and Koldo Gil. Ullrich was still ahead of the favorites group.

Sastre managed to create a gap and Vinokourov was trying to reach him. Plaza was now working to Valverde in front of the 24 men group.

Kloden increased his pace and left the group in search of Sastre. Valverde and Evans tried to respond.

Kloden came strong through Sastre and was heading for the win, as Valverde dropped Evans.

Great win from Andreas Kloden. Valverde was trying to reach Sastre and the second place.

But Sastre managed to get the 2nd place and Valverde was third.

With only one mountain stage left and being a very good time trialist Kloden has the Tour on his pocket. Valverde is now closer to Evans but we would want to get more time before the time trial where the australian should have some advantage.

Today we had a 2 HC climbs at the first half of the race. Early attacks were expected as the second half didn't had many difficulties.

After the second climb of the day CSC was setting a high pace. With 45 km to go and only 50 men in the peloton the BOD had 2'22 on them.

Again Ullrich was setting the pace on the final climb. No attack could be successful with that rhythm.

And only 7 men were at the head of the race as they were about to reach the end of the climb. Kloden, Ullrich, Sastre, Valverde, Vinokourov, Rasmussen and Di Luca. Where was Evans?

Evans was with Valjavec and Schleck, who naturally didn't cooperate a thing with him, 3'30 behind the leading group. Valverde was securing 2nd place overall.

And with 10 km of descent on the way Ullrich was exhausted but with his work done, he slowed down, so it would be between 6 men.

And Kloden won it again! Valverde was 2nd on the stage and now on the overall as well.

With Evans having a bad day Valverde moved up to second place. He also wanted the stage win but the yellow jersey was faster at the final sprint. The final time trial shouldn't affect his position as he is two far away from both first and third places.

Stage 20 was the final day for decisions with the 38 km individual time trial. After wining climbing and sprinting Andreas Kloden won the time trial! He was better than his team mate Ullrich. Valverde kept his 2nd place despite not being great against the clock, while Evans recovered his podium position by just 2 seconds with a great performance. A tired Cancellara was the best CSC man in 4th.

Bjarne Riis - We came her to win the overall. CSC always wants to win every race we're in, but this time it wasn't possible. Kloden was really strong and Valverde had some problems that got him away from the first place and then he tried to recover and being 2nd is a great result.

BR - Of course not. We have won many races this year, many of them important. We've been discussing the major races to the last day and this is what the sponsors and the fans expect from us. Of course everybody wants to win and we still have a lot of things to win this year.

R - Who will lead the team in Vuelta? Is that the main goal to the rest of the season?

BR - Plaza will be our team captain in Vuelta, which is a very important race for us. But we still have other races that we want to win.

R - How about transfers, it is said that Basso will be leaving the team. Dou you confirm it?

BR - Now we'll have to make a balance of what we want for next season. Next week there will be news on the teams future. We are also racing Tour de Wallonie this week.

R - So CSC will be the team sponsor next year?

BR - We have contract with CSC for the next 4 seasons, so that is a certain. If CSC will be our only sponsor it is something we'll have to see later.

Transfer news


Liquigas announced today that Ivan Basso will be racing for the italian team in 2008. On the way around goes the young promise Vincenzo Nibali who has signed for CSC. The danish team also announced that another italian Giovanni Visconti will race for them in 2008.

The italian Paolo Bettini who won LBL and 4 stages in Giro has signed for Caisse D'Epargne making the spanish team even stronger. Gutierrez Palacios will leave Caisse D'Epargne to go to Comunidad Valenciana.

Bouygyes Telecom confirmed today that Thomas Voeckler who is racing this year in the spanish team Kaiku will return next season. Also the italian Marco Pinotti signed for the french team.

T-Mobile signed his second reinforcement after Gilbert today with the sprinter from Argentina Ruben Bongiorno.

Rabobank signed with the spanish puncher Igor Astarloa for next season.

Finally the french climber David Moncoutié who is racing for Lotto will be on Discovery Channel squad on the next season.

Tour de Wallonie


O'Grady lead the team in Belgium but the best he did was a 2nd place on a stage and 8th place overall. The australian should be in Vuelta and his future is still uncertain, with many teams interested on him.

Vuelta a Burgos


After participating on the Tour with a 16th place, and despite his hard work for Valverde, Franck Schleck went to Burgos leading CSC team. With Landis, Menchov and the Giro winner Kashechkin there his work was hard.

With a line up also preparing for the Vuelta the older Schleck got a decent 2nd place on GC, just 26 seconds behind Kashechkin.

Deutschland Tour


Ruben Plaza who made a 10th place on the Tour came to Germany to discuss the win and to keep his preparation to Vuelta going.

The team lined up a strong squad on his support with the german Haussler for the sprints:
