Race Report
Lincoln GP

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0001_zpsbda85e2e.jpg
As the race started, the pace was very slow, the peloton just rolling out of Lincoln. Tim Kennaugh was the only one to go on the attack, Pete's brother gaining over a minute quickly. He was eventually joined by six other riders, including Bakker for Sky. As they hit the brutal climb for the first time, it was obvious that Bakker was the weakest rider over the cobbles and he had to battle every lap just to stay with these riders.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0002_zpsa50e6c1b.jpg
The peloton was being controlled by An Post, Miche and Endura as they began to pull back the six minute deficit to the escapees. Every lap, the peloton shattered into about twelve smaller groups, most of these never getting back, but the amount of times Bagdonas got caught out and had to be dragged back to the main group was unbelievable. Sky were doing much better than Gediminas, with most of their riders staying near the front. Poor Kim didn't enjoy the race too much and was out the back well before the end.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0003_zps5a8e9d19.jpg
And the final members of the breakaway were caught on the penultimate lap, with the teams of Franzoi and Bagdonas well in control. Rather surprisingly, there were few attacks today, with none of the favourites seeing fit to test their legs as they hit the final lap. The group was down to just thirteen riders now, with five Sky men in there.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0004-67_zps426810af.jpg
Into the last ten kilometres, and finally, the first meaningful attacks. It was the two race favourites, Franzoi and Bagdonas who tried to get away from the, now Ian Bibby led, peloton. These two rivals were, unsurprisingly, unwilling to work together and the 35 seconds they gained in their attack was soon whittled down to nothing. This group of thirteen now begun preparations for the finish and with Jones and Gilbert keeping the pace high, it looked good for Sky.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0005-63_zpsc47da38d.jpg
But somehow, Franzoi recovered from his attack to sprint for a whole two kilometres and take the win in the uphill finish. I have to say, sitting in a car and cheering out of the sunroof looks a little suspicious, though! Bagdonas took second, ahead of Ian Wilkinson. Somehow, none of Sky's riders could make the podium, with Hammarling, Oget, Gilbert and Huigsloot taking the next four places, and Jones also finishing in the top ten. Close but definitely no cigar today.

Wahoo a top 10, shame I wasn't the highest team rider Rolling Eyes .
Looking at the result it was a great stage in all, nicely done, shame there was no podium.

brewers90
@TheMM, can you see them now?

Not a great result there but what can you do against guys that can go on the attack for five kilometres, then without any recovery, sprint for two kilometres into the wind? Rolling Eyes Angry

TheManxMissile
All good now.

I know, its happened to me as well before Angry
Just hit them hard next race

Yep, Mitch is coming back from a bit of a break so he's not got great shape. The race hasn't finished yet though Wink

Race Report
Rhone - Alpes Isere Tour Stage 4

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0004_zps8502e1ff.jpg

The final stage in France is a tough, hilly race that will really test the legs after four hard days of racing. The final climb just before the finish will have all but the best in serious pain.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0001_zpsbe689993.jpg
After lots of early attempts to form breakaways were brought back by Cofidis, a group of eight riders managed to establish itself. The best placed rider was Francesconi, who started the day in ninth, 46 seconds off the lead. None of the eight had mathematical chance to overtake Fischer in the KoM standings, so the Dane claims that prize tonight. The eight gained an advantage of five minutes over the peloton.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0002_zps22c607e9.jpg
With the weather turning, Cofidis came to the front to bring the escapees back. There were a few crashes on the slippery descents, the highest profile being Charteau and Vitorino, who both lost their GC hopes on the tarmac. The Cofidis train soon had the breakaway in sight as the peloton approached the final climb. Marque Porto of Carmim was the first to put in an attack but he got about ten seconds before being reeled back in.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0003_zps8f38a476.jpg
And as they hit the final climb, Van Niekerk was leading but the attacks were coming all around the South African. Goos, Cabreira and Lequatre the three coming up fast behind him. Aidan managed to stay with these attackers as they made the ascent but there were attacks coming from everywhere, Hivert, Schumacher, Dumoulin and Simon the biggest names making the move across to this group.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0004_zps291f16fb.jpg
Unfortunately for Van Niekerk and for Sky, he just couldn't hang on to this elite group as they hit the summit and had to drop back to the peloton. The group of ten out front then sprinted for the win, Schumacher unsurprisingly taking another win, ahead of Simon, Lequatre, Dumoulin and Jerome. This gave the German the overall victory, well clear of Jungels in second. In the sprint for eleventh, Malacarne just beat Jaquin and Zabala, the Colombian ensuring he would be Sky's highest finisher overall, in 16th position. Yet another harsh French lesson for the youngsters.
