It's only May after all, he's progressing alright in training, as is everyone (well, almost everyone! Wink)

Race Report
Rhone - Alpes Isere Tour Stage 1

The first day of racing is definitely not flat despite what the organisers may say. There is barely a flat road in the whole last forty kilometres and with a short climb just four kilometres from the end, the pure sprinters will certainly struggle to stay near the front. Dumoulin and Simon should be tough to beat here.

The early breakaway contained just 23 riders today! Quite a few of the top riders were in there like Flahaut, Dumoulin, Vachon, Blot and Schumacher. Johansson was Sky's sole representative in this ridiculous group. As you'd expect, the peloton wasn't particularly happy about it when they got a three minute lead and Moncoutie was the main rider pulling them back! What a strange start to the race!

After that group was caught, the race calmed down and returned to normality, with five riders being allowed clear. Fischer was in there for Sky, along with Pellaud (Atlas Personal), De Kort (Jo Piels), Patron (Wallonie - Bruxelles) and Van Coppernolle (Jong Vlaanderen). Fischer and Pellaud were quite a lot better than the other three on this terrain so they were having to do a lot of the work.

On to the categorised climbs and the first jersey of the race was up for grabs. Fischer won the first sprint, which was strangely more difficult than the first category climb afterwards. And, despite being narrowly outsprinted by Pellaud at the next summit, Alex scored enough points to take the spotty jersey at the end of the day by two points.

Fischer gave it everything to stay away but the big teams just weren't going to let it happen and the Dane was caught in the final five kilometres as they hit the final rise. Christina Watches were doing all the work but their sprinter Furlan was never going to be able to deal with the little hill. Sky were once again struggling with the brutal pace and Jaquin had to go it alone but he was just too far back at the top of the hill and had a lot of work to do.

At the line, it was incredibly tight between Blot, Dumoulin and Reihs but with the Dane fading, it was Blot who just held off little Sammy. Saur could only manage fourth and fifth with Simon and Hivert, a result which they'll be disappointed with. Jaquin finished strongly but, from way too far back, could only manage 28th. Another tough French test awaits by the looks of this first stage.

A long, hard day in the saddle awaits the riders today, with the climbing starting at KM0 and carrying on for the entire day, culminating in an uphill sprint for the line. This could be carnage!

As you would expect, there were hundreds of attacks on the first climb, as almost every team tried to get some riders up the road. Fischer attacked near the top but De Kort went with him and took maximum points. Nevertheless, they both scored ten points today, keeping the gap between them in the standings the same. Eventually, two riders, Gutierrez and Teuns, got away and started building a lead.

Later on, two more riders, Francesconi and Gottfried bridged the gap to the front two and these four were able to pick the pace up and pull out a seven minute gap to the peloton. In the main group, it was a brutal day, with riders continually dropping out the back, catching back up, then being dropped again. Sky's riders were coping alright but not many of them like these constant short, steep climbs.

Soon Cofidis and Bretagne put lots of riders on the front and began to reel the escapees back at a serious rate of knots. It soon became obvious that Zabala was the main man today as he had great legs. Thompson and Droochit couldn't hack the pace and had to let the peloton go, while Fischer decided to save energy for his King of the Mountains challenge ahead and also dropped out the back.

And after some very aggressive racing on the last couple of laps, two riders managed to get away with five kilometres to go. These two, Schumacher and Jungels, made it all the way to the line, with the German taking another win. The sprint for third was won by Simon, ahead of Moncoutie and Dumoulin, with Zabala Sky's highest finisher in tenth. Thirty seven seconds is the gap between the leader and our best five riders on GC with the tough Alpine test to come tomorrow.

Quiet first 2 stages, but looking forward to that HC climb tomorrow. Just a pitty that it's far from the finish.

The big mountain test. Though the stage is nearly 200 kilometres long and has a huge HC climb, it is too far from the finish to be decisive. With a long downhill and flat run to the finish, there should be a fairly large bunch to sprint for victory.

The ever aggressive Fischer was at it again trying to clinch the polka dot jersey with the many points on offer today. He was joined by six others, none of whom had a single point in the climbers' standings. They were Yovchev, Pomoshnikov, Roosen, Meenhorst, Casimiro and Danacik. They worked well together to the foot of the massive climb, Fischer winning the first mountain sprint which, fortunately, nobody else was interested in.

On to the monster climb and Christina Watches were straight on the front trying to reduce the eight minute gap up to the leaders and protecting Schumacher's GC lead at the same time. The pace wasn't extreme by any means but it was quick enough to shed round eighty riders out the back. At the top, Fischer took maximum points again, crossing the summit five minutes before the peloton but running out of energy fast.

With the peloton closing fast, the escapees started attacking each other on the final categorised climb of the day. Unfortunately, Fischer could only take third at this sprint, giving him a 38 point lead in the competition heading into the final stage, where there are fifty points available. Not quite in the bag for Alex. Jaquin, Droochit and Thompson had done their team duty for the day and dropped out the back to cruise to the finish at their own speed.

And not long after the summit, the final members of the breakaway were caught by the Christina Watches train and thoughts turned to the sprint. None of Sky's riders were having great days and none of them are good sprinters but Van Niekerk would be giving it a go.

However, with eight kilometres to go, Agnoli of Cofidis tried to get away from the sprinters and put the hammer down. Despite Christina Watches having been in control all day, the Danish team suddenly slowed down and let the Italian gain a minute's advantage on the bunch. It looked like he had enough but then Schumacher's team came back to the front to lead him out. Could Agnoli make it?

He certainly could, easily. Agnoli took the win by thirty seconds, with his team mate Dumoulin unsurprisingly winning the bunch sprint for a Cofidis 1-2. Schumacher was third but still lost the lead to Agnoli, with Blot and Jungels completing the top five. Van Niekerk managed to sprint to seventeenth after getting a bit blocked in, with Zabala, Johansson, Sutton and Fischer (just) getting the same time as Dumoulin. The team now have two men in the top twenty but we need to go hunting for a few seconds tomorrow.

Lincoln GP

The next race in the British calendar is the Lincoln GP in, believe it or not, Lincoln. The race is another cobbled one, although this one is more like De Ronde than Paris Roubaix, with one cobbled climb that has to be tackled twelve times over the race. It's only 162 kilometres in length but with all of those tricky cobbles to get over, it should still be a tough race.

Maxime Oget will lead the team here as he carries some great form back from the USA and he doesn't mind the cobbled hills. Gilbert and Hammarling will also hope to go well but they haven't raced for a while, so it will be interesting to see how they go. There may be too much climbing for Huigsloot while the rest of the team will, as usual, help as much as they can.
