Race Report
Tour of the Gila Stage 3

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0003_zpse42b359f.jpg

The potentially all-important time trial in Tyrone, at 25km, will see the GC completely changed tonight. It is an out-and-back course with a gentle ascent in the first third and the same descent in the final third. Therefore, the riders who go out hard on the climbs and can descend well may just succeed but it will definitely be a difficult test for all to overcome if they want a top result at the end of the race.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0005_zps6da6a713.jpg
The first of the stage favourites to hit the course was Ed Clancy of Rapha. He prefers shorter, flatter TT's but he is still good enough to compete at this level on any course. He beat the early leader, Sweeting, by nearly forty seconds. Immediately after him, Slik nearly beat him and later in the day, his team mate, Tennant did, by six seconds.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0006_zps750b179e.jpg
The favourites for today were Optum, with the two Z's, Zwizanski and Zirbel, both expecting to be right at the top. Zwizanski was first and beat Clancy by twelve seconds to take a comfortable lead before his team mate absolutely smashed his time by 31 seconds! Could anyone get anywhere near Zirbel's time? Friedman was the third Optum rider to finish in the top ten.

Sky had numerous hopes for today, with Johansson the first to take to the course. The Swede was in brilliant form today and he went just six seconds behind Zwizanski to put himself a provisional third. None of the others made the top ten but Oget, Van Niekerk and Kim all set solid times to claim top twenty finishes and keep them in with a shout on the GC.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0008_zps76987773.jpg
Another one of the big favourites was French veteran Bodrogi of Team Type 1, but he went slightly slower than Johansson, in fourth, which is slightly disappointing for a guy with his ability against the clock. His team mate, Antomarchi, finished in ninth to stay right up in the top ten overall.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0009_zps7b8525f9.jpg
The final rider with the chance to beat Zirbel was Ben Jacques-Maynes of Bissell. The American flew up the climb just a couple of seconds off Zirbel but faded in the second half to finish second, 13 seconds behind today's winner. That meant Johansson was bumped off the podium into fourth, but that's still a great result and it moves him into the top ten overall. Oget is even higher in the rankings and still has the white jersey on his back.

The team are putting in some decent performances in America Wink

Ollfardh
Another good day for the team! Quite a few still in a good GC position. Kim is just going to have to survive the flat stag (should be ok) and then try something the last day. That 1st category climb sure looks attracktive Wink
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Race Report
Tour of the Gila Stage 4

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0004_zps9d5c62f3.jpg

A very short criterium that is just for the pure sprinters to have some fun. Pan flat and very wide roads mean a certain bunch sprint. The rest need to stay out of trouble ahead of tomorrow's killer stage.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0001_zps6336c539.jpg
On such a short stage, the breakaway was just for show, with the six riders only getting two minutes ahead before they were reeled back in. Grajales was the best placed in this group but they were just sent out by their team managers to get some airtime.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0002_zps1f2eb78f.jpg
Sure enough, the break was caught with ten kilometres to go as Chipotle and UnitedHealthcare were really putting the hammer down. Von Hoff and Van Poppel the focus of their attentions. There were numerous other sprinters battling to get on the back of their trains. Sky were the only other team with a sprint train as, once again, Oget and Bracco kept Jaquin right up at the front.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0003_zpsa41fa484.jpg
And as expected, Van Poppel cruised to the line again, at least challenged this time by Von Hoff. Serebryakov was way back in third, ahead of House, who is in incredible form, and Dean Downing. Jaquin did brilliantly again to finish sixth, beating Ed Clancy, no less, to the line. The rest of the team saved as much energy as possible with both eyes on tomorrow's test.

Tour of the Gila Stage 5

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0005_zps9993d712.jpg

The final stage is a real killer with three really tough categorised climbs in the second half of the stage and an uphill finish again after that. This will hurt the non-climbers and those who have used too much energy this week. Let the fun begin!

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0001_zps651c4ff6.jpg
Today's breakaway contained seven riders, none of whom were particularly good climbers but Friedman, who started the day in fifteenth on GC, was in there, surprisingly let go by the peloton. Lima of Onda was also in there, as were Last (IG-Sigma Sport), McGowan (UK Youth) and De Buyst (Bontrager). This was definitely the quiet before the storm as the peloton cruised along; the escapees pulling out a six minute gap on the main group.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0002_zpsb4a37493.jpg
Once Bissell came to life, they put on an impressive show of strength, five riders pulling the breakaway back at a decent pace. Jacques-Maynes isn't the best climber in the world but he clearly has good shape and this performance from his team would certainly motivate him to perform above his limit. As they hit the summit of the first second category climb, the peloton were four minutes behind the leaders.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0003_zpse385a21d.jpg
On the next, brutal first category climb, Kim did what he did in Croatia, hitting the front and riding out of the front of the peloton without even needing to get out of the saddle. He quickly gained the three minutes up to the escapees an settled into his rhythm but had he gone too soon? Behind, Dennis Van Niekerk also attacked, setting off after Kim, whilst both Johansson and Oget both got caught on the wrong side of a big split and both would fall well out of the top ten unfortunately.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0004_zpsa8065bf7.jpg
And sure enough just before the final descent, both Kim and Van Niekerk were caught by the much reduced peloton, which was being driven along by UnitedHealthcare at a ferocious pace. Whilst Kim's day had come to an end, it was just starting for Van Niekerk, Zabala and Bracco as they got themselves up near the front ready to respond to any attacks. The attacks kept coming but none of them stuck.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0005_zps663970a3.jpg
But two riders did get away near the end. Zabala and Efimkin pulled out a gap on the rest and as they hit the final kilometre, they were side by side, going as fast as they could. Efimkin is clearly the better rider, and the more experienced, but could Diego pull off a shock? Behind, Bracco and Van Niekerk were both a few rows back in the peloton as they unleashed their sprints for the line.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0006_zps362acee4.jpg
In the end, it was easy for Efimkin as he pulled clear of Zabala on the steepest part. Diego held on for second ahead of Frattini, El Fares and Janse Van Rensburg, who just pipped his compatriot Van Niekerk on the line. Bracco was right behind Aidan in seventh, while Jacques-Maynes finished in the same group to clinch the overall. Van Niekerk just finished in the top ten, one second behind his namesake Dennis in ninth.

Great race!! the team did a great job in that last stage, Van Niekerk surely will be a great stage racer in the future...

Diego is showing himself really strong in long mounaint stages... that's what I wanted for him...

I was just looking around some news and found this Wink

This is the most important cycling site in my country, here is in English: Colombians around the world: Diego Zabala harvesting results in United States with the Sky Development Team.
Tour of the Gila: The young colombian rider keeps showing his talent in the United States.
The new hope of colombian cycling arrived 2nd in the last stage of this northamerican race and ended 13 in the GC.

We got some great results here Smile

Ollfardh
Great work for the team, don't regret my suicide attack Pfft
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Daggen
Good day for the team, but shit day for Johansson

Thanks for all the comments guys. It was indeed a great race, it's just a shame we couldn't get anyone a bit higher on the GC or the white jersey but never mind.

@kadtagenero, Diego is doing very well lately, hopefully he can keep it up. Also, nice reporting again Wink

@Ollfardh, Kim did a great job for the team. Although everyone shouting Yoo Suk when he got caught seemed a bit harsh Pfft

@Daggen, he just got caught too far back in the peloton and he couldn't make it back. Maybe a bit of inexperience. Sad

The next stage race for the team is in the South of France, for the four-day Rhone-Alpes Isere Tour. This is a tough race, with none of the stages being truly flat. The first stage looks the easiest on paper but there is plenty of climbing, particularly in the latter part of the stage. The second stage is long and undulating and will really be for the strong men in the field, especially with a very difficult uphill sprint. The third stage is dominated by one massive, HC climb halfway through the day. However, with the last climb coming so far from the finish, there should be a reduced bunch sprint at the flat finish. The final stage is another tough, undulating day but it's not as long as the previous two stages, and the harder climbs are again dealt with earlier in the day. However, a third category climb that peaks just seven kilometres from the finish will be a big decider on the day and any rider who wants to win will need to be attentive here.

The Team

The team is a mixture of riders coming back from the US in great shape, and riders who haven't raced for a while and aren't in great shape! Van Niekerk, Johansson, Zabala and Sutton will hope for some good performances, although as usual, the big French teams will be difficult to beat. Local lad Jaquin knows the area well and will hope for a good result on the opening stage and maybe beyond if he has good legs.

Great result in Tour of the Gila! Very happy with Aidan sneaking into the top 10! Grin Really becoming a great climber! Looking forward to Rhone-Alpes.

When asked about Aidan's next race (Rhone - Alpes Isere Tour) and the goals or expectations he has, he replied,
"I like stage 3."
