I'm quite happy to see Kruijswijk hanging on to the lead group. It would be great if he could reach his 2011 form again. |

I agree, I miss those days... He was a top 10 GC rider in the Giro back then. Still he was barely hanging on, then again, he is better in the real mountain work. |

De Gendt for huge disappointment. He finished so far behind.
And how about Ulissi winning, I was a little surprised by that.

Stage 6: Sassano to Montecassino (247KM)
The 2014 Giro d'Italia visits the site of one of World War II's most infamous battles with a summit finish at Montecassino. Just two days short of the conclusion of the fourth battle for Montecassino (18th May), the race will seek to honour the fallen amidst yet more forecasts of rain.
Spanning 247 kilometres, the stage from Sassano to Montecassino is reminiscent of a stage from the Vuelta a Espana. Featuring one Intermediate Sprint point and a fourth category climb, the parcours has a few hills early on before flattening out before the ascent up to Montecassino.
Who emerges with the stage honours will be ultimately be decided by the 8.5 kilometre climb, averaging out at a gradient of 5.1 percent, to Montecassino. A rather steady climb occasionally broken up by the presence of sectors with gradients up to 9.5% that is arguably suited to the mountain train tactics often employed by Team Sky.
With the last few hundred metres of the climb flattening out, Stage 6 is be best suited to someone with the explosiveness to pack a decent sprint and the legs to keep up with the General Classification contenders. An on-form Alejandro Valverde could be a strong favourite for the stage were he riding the Giro d'Italia.
The final 250 metres of the stage are almost a perpetual horse shoe in shape, with the last 40 metres before the line being the closest thing to a finishing straight the riders will receive. While for the tourist inclined, the stage finishes just outside the site of the restored Benedictine Abbey of Montecassino.
Fight for the Maglia Rossa & Azzurra
With nothing to play for thanks to the mountainous finale to the stage will flatland sprinters like Nacer Bouhanni get involved in the breakaway again? Yesterday's sixth fifth stage saw Elia Viviani overtake Nacer Bouhanni in the race to win the coveted Maglia Rossa (Red Jersey) of the Points Classification, but the tough ending to the stage may deter them.
Meanwhile the Maglia Azzurra (Blue Jersey) of the King of the Mountains Classification could be in for a chance of owner with Maarten Tjallingii's lead threatened due to the points on offer at the finish. The Belkin rider will need to score points during the stage to be in with a chance of retaining his jersey.
Stage Contenders
After fighting to a valiant sixth place yesterday, acting as a springboard for Diego Ulissi, today may be just the stage for Orica GreenEDGE's Michael Matthews. Should the Australian be able to cope with the length of the climb the lower gradients and flatness of the finish should suit him come a reduced bunch sprint.
While Team Sky's Ben Swift did not compete for the stage honours yesterday, today's finale could similarly suit him better. Should Plan Swift fail Team Sky may attempt to go with Plan Edvald Boasson Hagen again, or perhaps they could let Dario Cataldo or Salvatore Puccio off the proverbial leash.
Should the climb to Montecassino prove too lengthy for the likes of Matthews, Swift and Boasson Hagen then Lampre Merida could be looking at a second consecutive stage victory. While Explosive pocket rocket climbers like Rodriguez and Pozzovivo will find the gradients too low, Diego Ulissi's explosive acceleration is not just the result of a superior power-to-weight ratios.
With the majority of the General Classification teams keeping their domestiques on the leash in service of their General Classification riders the list of stage contenders is narrower than it may be during a one day race. So for additional contenders we may have to look at the General Classification contenders themselves, with Cadel Evans the most suited to chasing after the bonus seconds available to the first three finishers.
The smaller Italian Pro-Continental teams, such as Neri Sottoli and Bardiani, will be keen to get on the roll of stage victors and we can expect them to try and spring a surprise.

Majka and Niemiec won't tell it loud, but a win on Monte Cassino would be something unique for any Polish rider. I would watch out for them. |

Is it a team leader?!? NO, but Majka looks strong! Katusha definitely has the best team here, but I can't wait to see the mountains!

Majka and Niemiec will be super motivated knowing the history of Monte Cassino for Poland.
The climb is not greatly suited, but I am sure they will try something at the end for sure.

So could be german, italian, american, new zealend, australian, canadien and whatever other soldiers were dying on the slopes of Monte Cassino.
Anyway i know that climb very well, as i was there last summer, it was a brutal uphill ride by bus, i would not want to do it on bike.

While obviously true, this is very special place in Polish history as rather obviously seen by the Polish Cemetery built there.
Anyway, I hope Arrendondo wins, Ullissi the favoruite clearly.

Ulissi really struggled with distance so far, and after 257k I wouldn't bet on him.

Considering the nature of this stage I can't see it, it's too easy. It's 240km of flat ridden at gentle tempo due to the weak break and then uphill sprint. This stage is not Ardennes where you have to fight for position at all times which takes out a lot from riders.
Anyway, he's the favoruite, but I'd be rather impressive if he does the double, there's a bunch of riders that can win today.

This is a tough stage to gauge, I think someone from a break might steal it but Orica might want to keep the jersey in the squad with Weening so if that's the case then someone like Ulissi is a good bet
