The next cav???

Shame about my crash today, I was hoping for alot better, arm's aching a bit hope its nothing to serious...

Nice podium again, I fear Hammarling might leave us for a bigger team at the end of the season. I'm sure the Sky main team would want him in their sprint train or to help Flecha on the cobbles.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Ian Butler
Great podium place there!

Back over to America now for the Tour of the Gila in New Mexico. This race is one stage longer than Joe Martin and is certainly a more exciting prospect for the neutrals. The race opens with a challenging stage that starts easy and then ends with a brutal climb to the finish that should see some big time gaps straight away. The second stage is counted as flat but is actually harder than the first stage. However, even though the finish is uphill, it's nowhere near as steep as the opener, and should see a bunch sprint. The third stage is a fairly long TT, before a very short criterium in Silver City on stage four. Then, one final challenge on stage five; and when I say challenge, I mean it! The stage starts off easily enough before taking in three really tough climbs, and there's still time for a short ascent to the finish. Ouch! This will be a real test for these youngsters.

The Team

The same eight riders will take part here that took part in Arkansas. That means loads of climbers, so we hope for some good results. With there being a long time trial, any good GC result will have to come from one of those guys who can compete against the clock. Again, Jaquin and Bracco will both hope for some good sprint results, particularly on stage two, which might be too difficult for the pure sprinters.

Race Report
Tour of the Gila Stage 1

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0001_zps66016f7d.jpg

This stage is all about what happens in the final five kilometres with a steep climb to the finish line. We won't know who will win the race after today but we will know who won't.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0007_zpse190c342.jpg
A group of four got away today at the very start. They were all from different English-speaking nations but none of them were British! Semple of Australia, Scully from New Zealand, Cooper of Canada and the American, Gaimon. They built up a lead of eight minutes on the peloton, Semple winning both intermediate sprints to put himself in the provisional lead of the race.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0008_zpsf678aeaf.jpg
It was Team Type 1, UnitedHealthcare and Bissell pulling the escapees back today. No surprise about the first two, working for El Fares and Frattini respectively, but it was quite surprising seeing Bissell working this hard. They must have a lot of faith in Ben Jacques-Maynes. Sky were sitting quietly in the bunch trying to work out who would be the leader for today. Would the climb be too short for Van Niekerk?

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0009_zpse0d5e9ef.jpg
And as the peloton hit the final slope, it was Bracco who hit out first, quickly catching the four escapees, who had done magnificently to still be out front. Unfortunately, the Italian had terrible legs today and never stood a chance of winning but his attack was primarily for his team as the other teams were forced to pick the pace up. Ricardo was caught with three kilometres to go.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0010_zps3ff69b59.jpg
As they hit the flamme rouge, it was House, Goesinnen and El Fares who had opened up their sprints and had pulled out a gap on the rest. This final kilometre was very steep and the legs were burning for everybody. Behind, it was every man for himself at Sky, with Van Niekerk and Oget leading the charge, but could any of them catch the leading trio?

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0011_zpsb513fdc1.jpg
No. House just pipped Goesinnen on the line with El Fares just behind. These three gained twenty seconds on the next group, led home by Antomarchi and Van Niekerk, unfortunately Dennis, not Aidan! He faded to 16th but it was still a good day for Sky, with Oget finishing sixth, the highest placed American. Maxime also takes the lead in the U25 classification and will wear the white jersey. The rest of the peloton came home 48 seconds behind the winner, with Zabala winning that sprint in tenth. Every member of the team were in the top thirty. Good start!

Yeah, it was a lot easier than I expected. As in, you didn't need any ability in the mountains to do well here. A bit disappointing but he didn't lose too much time. Smile

Tour of the Gila Stage 2

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0002_zps5aab9391.jpg

This is a 'flat' stage but it will not be easy. A tough climb in the last twenty kilometres and then an uphill drag to the finish should make the sprint interesting. The pure sprinters and punchy climbers will both have opportunities to do something at the finish.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0001_zps45fccef0.jpg
Today's breakaway had only three riders in it, Barker (UK Youth), Kriek (Jelly Belly) and Lloyd (IG Sigma Sport), who was actually one of the stage favourites today. This small group were competing for all of the points while working well together to try to build up an unassailable margin. They got a seven minute gap but it would be very difficult with the tough climb near the end.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0002_zps8403f024.jpg
Onda have only brought three riders here and two of those were on the front all day working for their leader, Lima. Rapha Condor, UnitedHealthcare and Team Type 1 also spent time on the front as the gap came down in big chunks. The gap was down to a minute at the foot of the categorised climb but the pace slowed a lot on the way up because Onda didn't want to tire Lima, who is a poor climber. The gap went up to nearly two minutes but as soon as they crested the summit, the pace shot back up.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0003_zps24500e80.jpg
And the final rider, Barker, was caught with five kilometres to go and attentions turned to the uphill sprint. Rapha Condor were the first to hit the front, working for Clancy but he wouldn't be able to go that fast uphill, surely? UnitedHealthcare brought Van Poppel to the front and Team Type 1 were looking after Serebryakov. Sky had a good leadout aswell, with Oget and Bracco bringing Jaquin right to the head of the field. Then the climb started...

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0004_zps0216a475.jpg
And it was a lot harder than people expected, with most of the final kilometre at over 4% gradients. Boy Van Poppel made it look easy though, cruising to the line, well clear of Von Hoff and El Fares. Jaquin had a very strong kick to take fourth, just ahead of Serebryakov. As expected, the top ten was a mixture of sprinters and punchers, with Ed Clancy being beaten by his team mate, House! Everybody was given the same time except Slik, who punctured near the end.

Ollfardh
Nice one from Luc! Now a good time trial for Yoo-suk. If that goes wrong, he definitely wants to try something the last stage!
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Ian Butler
Good to see Ricardo bringing Jaquin so close to the finish Grin

mvhoogdalem
