Ryan Eastman - Bontrager 2013 February
Avin Wargunnson
Great to see you back with this nice Eastman story, i think you made the best decision, given the circumstances. I have still less and less time to follow stories, but i will surely find some for this one. Smile

This season will be tough, but nice top 10 from Grenda in China to start with. Good luck in rest of Tour of South Africa and be glad Nolan Hoffman is not there. Pfft
I'll be back

Ian Butler
Good of Brown to have that KoM jersey for the team. Let's hope he can hold on to it Wink

roturn
Thanks all of you.

@ Avin: I like the decision as well. Gives me more motivation tbh and after the season I had something like this planned due to the slow progression by Eastman.

Tour of South Africa

Stage 3: Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium - Summer Strand (175,5km)
imageshack.us/a/img11/87/rsa201333.jpg

It might be the easiest stage this Tour and no question Van Poppel is the huge favourite today. For us it`s about being in the breakaway, defending our good GC position with Leonard and myself and also the KoM jersey.

imageshack.us/a/img266/9571/rsa201339.jpg

Well, first goal failed as we couldn`t get a rider into the breakaway. Mainly Lawrence was trying it but in the end we see a group of just 3 including Hasnahoui (Tuesia), Atzori (Metec) and Kvasina (Egypt).

imageshack.us/a/img24/969/rsa2013311.jpg

Matthé Pronk (Marco Polo) is the only rider being able to join them making it four riders in todays breakaway. Tomorrow we need to be better placed to join the group.

imageshack.us/a/img5/4891/rsa2013313.jpg

Not much happened on the stage. The group still had a tiny gap on the Cat.2 climb and Nathan Brown takes the last 2 points there to present the KoM jersey. No danger for him from the group as none of them had any points before the stage. Pronk taking the 10 points at least moves up to 3rd with Peña Peña having 14 and Brown with 18 points.

imageshack.us/a/img152/3577/rsa2013315.jpg

The last hill was ridden with full speed and so we see a bigger selection than expected. Only 40 riders are left in the peloton with a group of 100 a bit behind. Meanwhile a group of 6 including race leader Van Poppel is even a bit ahead. R. Janse Van Rensburg, Haedo and Ochoa Quintero are the other "attackers" out of the peloton while Pronk and Atzori have been dropped by Kvasina and Hasnahoui 17s further ahead.

imageshack.us/a/img203/1530/rsa2013318.jpg

Even though the peloton became bigger to 142 riders again with the attackers all being caught we see Leonard, 8th in the GC and our best placed rider struggling in the first dropped group. The pace was too high and he lost contact. Bad luck for us as it`s impossible to come back with only 3km to go.
Only Brown, Atkins a struggling Lawrence and myself are in the first peloton.

imageshack.us/a/img6/5373/rsa2013320.jpg

The pace is done for Haedo in the Cameroun jersey. Behind him we see R.Janse Van Rensburg and Van Poppel side by side. And just behind the South African it`s me having a perfect position. The last hill hopefully has exhaust some of the pure sprinters like Stroetinga, Friedman or Milne, so I have to try. My legs are feeling extremely well today and without any sprinter here I have this freedom.

imageshack.us/a/img254/5017/rsa2013322.jpg

Well. No surprise that I couldn`t ride for the win. It was a decision between Janse Van Rensburg and Van Poppel. In the end the better allrounder was the stronger rider and South Africa has their first stage win in their home race.

imageshack.us/a/img831/3125/rsa2013323.jpg

Heado couldn`t get much more than the 3rd today. But behind him I have a close fight with Stroetinga. In the end I was a tiny bit stronger and finish on a very nice 4th today. Barret, Milne and Friedmann next make it a successful stage for the American teams as also Howe as 10th just behind the Columbian climber Baez.

As resumee we lost one GC rider, weren`t in the breakaway but could defend the KoM lead with Brown and had a good stage result. In total not the worst outcome out of todays stage even though Leonards time loss wasn`t expected today.

A very nice achievement for Ryan here!

Inspiring story!

One practical question, in case I would have to face an unwanted promotion myself: what did you do to set yourself back to CT and the other team to PCT?

Thanks all.
This came quite unexpected. It`s the first of 3 season peaks, while the third will be the biggest one for the American races in autumn.
4th was pretty much the maximum on this stage. Probably hard to repeat this.

@Blueprint: That`s quite easy actually. Open your save with any editor and go to DYN_Team. There you find fkIDdivision. 10Pfftro Tour, 11: PCT, 12: CT.
You just have to change this. In case of PT teams it might be better to do it already in the offseason as otherwise it might not work with the invitation for Pro Tour races.

Thanks for the off-season advice Smile

Stage 4: Bloukrans Bridge - George (148,6km)

imageshack.us/a/img339/5475/rsa201344.jpg

Todays stage is rated as flat but is looking much harder than yesterdays, where we have already seen quite a few riders struggling.
With Leonard out of the GC competition I am the single leader now being on a good 8th at the moment. And surely I want to improve even more here as my form seems to be pretty good at the moment.

imageshack.us/a/img96/618/rsa2013427.jpg

Nathan Brown takes the first Cat.1 KoM and extends his lead. Foder, Havik and Atzori come over the line next ahead of some Rabobank CT guys leading the peloton.

imageshack.us/a/img339/5285/rsa2013429.jpg

Foder (Christina Watches) and Havik (De Rijke) also join Brown in todays breakaway. Next to this trio Chaabane (Algerie) and Goncalves (Gabon) are in this group.

imageshack.us/a/img543/703/rsa2013431.jpg

Brown has a great day and also takes the next mountain points ahead of Goncalves, Chaabane, Foder and Havik.

imageshack.us/a/img51/8919/rsa2013433.jpg

85km left and a gap of 6min. It`s the maximum as the gap goes backwards now. It`s extremely windy today with gusting over 49km/h. This makes the race even harder.

imageshack.us/a/img33/2757/rsa2013435.jpg

Brown also takes the 3rd KoM with Chaabane and Goncalvez next. Good that the other riders all fight for the points and share them this way.

imageshack.us/a/img199/5996/rsa2013437.jpg

26km left and still 2min gap. Lots of riders already lost contact due to the smaller hills and wind. 129 riders are left in the peloton but the hardest part of the day is still ahead of us.

imageshack.us/a/img23/826/rsa2013439.jpg

Not the biggest surprise but definitely something to mention. Brown takes the maximum points today and has a huge gap now to the next riders. Great effort, Nathan.

imageshack.us/a/img607/2534/rsa2013441.jpg

This last climb was very selective. A group of 6 are in between the breakaway and the "peloton" of just 40 riders. These are R.Janse Van Rensburg (2.), Olivier (21.), Kamp Egested (34.), Bauer (5.), Lammerthink (3.) and Thomas (19.). So most big names in the GC are in there and all are within the best placed riders in the GC. Unfortunately I missed the split and also race leader Van Poppel is not in there. But with Olivier they have at least a rider in that group and might even go for him as he is the better puncheur.

imageshack.us/a/img9/3929/rsa2013449.jpg

In the next group it`s just me and Leonard, while Atkins just lost contact. Diaz, 4th in the GC, Kouvenhoven, 20th and also Van Poppel are trying to close the gap, while I have first to come to the front of this group now.

imageshack.us/a/img845/7636/rsa2013452.jpg

The Janse Van Rensburg group catches the breakaway around Brown but also several riders from the later group including myself found contact again.
Some riders immediately use this occasion for another attack.
It`s Bauer, Lammertink, Olivier and Kamp Egested. These four really want to take profit out of this situation.

imageshack.us/a/img839/3204/rsa2013456.jpg

This is leading to another selection and now bad luck for Jack Bauer, who was one of the strongest so far. The 5th in the GC punctures and now sees a group of just 19 passing him. In there Nathan Brown, while I am still in the next group with 36s back.

imageshack.us/a/img13/5912/rsa2013458.jpg

4,3km left and finally I was able to join the front group. It did cost a lot of energy riding in the wind but it surely was worth it. More riders lost contact and so it`s just 15 in this group but Nathan Brown at the end of the first group might have to let go soon as the stage was very exhausting for him.

In this group are definitely the strongest puncheurs with R. Janse Van Rensburg, Lammertink, Thomas, Van Poppel, Olivier, Diaz, Schumacher, Grabovsky, Kamp Egested, Baez, Minnard and myself. Only Jack Bauer is missing after his puncture.

imageshack.us/a/img823/1704/rsa2013460.jpg

The sprint starts and I am in an later position and don`t feel that well to perform in the sprint as yesterday. Therefore the effort to fight back into the leading group was too exhausting.
Just by looking on the sprint skills it should be in between Van Poppel and Janse Van Rensburg, but Van Poppel had to do the same efford than me.

imageshack.us/a/img28/6874/rsa2013462.jpg

Janse Van Rensburg takes this stage easily making it two consecutive wins and also the GC lead as Lammertink and Schumacher follow on the next places. Van Poppel indeed was too exhausted and finished on the 8th. As 11th I miss the top 10 very close but move up in the GC to the 7th and am happy that I am still in the GC battle.

In the background you can see some riders sprinting fast. These are Baez and Minnard in the first group and a bit behind Bauer and Boeve. The officials are counting these four also into the first group making it a total of 15 riders within the same time today and Bauer is still keeping his GC spot after a huge fight in the final kilometers.

Tour of South Africa

Stage 5: Oudtshoorn - Barrydale (176,8km)
imageshack.us/a/img543/5012/rsa201355.jpg

Todays stage is rated flat even though there is a tough hill towards the final. As on every stage here you mustn`t lose your concentration at any time to avoid unnecessary time loss.

imageshack.us/a/img26/5671/rsa2013509.jpg

Josh Atkins is our man for the breakaway today. A group of 7 more is trying to create a gap. At the moment it still takes some more effort with only 32s to the bunch.

imageshack.us/a/img571/1686/rsa2013511.jpg

7 riders were finally been able to create a gap of more than 3min. Luckily Atkins is also part of this group. Joining him are Kvasina, Reinders, Menville, Diniz, Calatayud and Homrani.

imageshack.us/a/img132/7937/rsa2013513.jpg

Early on MTN - Quebeka is organizing the pace in the peloton. It`s quite obvious that they don`t want to allow a too big gap.

imageshack.us/a/img715/836/rsa2013515.jpg

Menville, Atkins, Homrani, Kvasina are the first rider over the KoM line. Nothing dangerous for Nathan Brown and it already looks pretty much secured that he will win it in the end of the race as his advantage is already quite big.

imageshack.us/a/img42/9779/rsa2013517.jpg

The sprinter teams of Rabobank CT for Van Poppel and Gabon for Haedo are also coming to the front now trying to secure a sprint finish.
First named did have a great start into this race but since then he looks a bit exhausted. His early sesaon was quite successful on one hand but also very long already.

imageshack.us/a/img109/1458/rsa2013519.jpg

11km left and we start the last small hill. As there is still a small gap to the breakaway the pace is obviously very high. This brings many pure sprinters into problems and once again the finish seems to suit the more hilly sprinters more.

imageshack.us/a/img195/5953/rsa2013521.jpg

Just under the 10km banner Atkins is caught. It was a nice try by our Kiwi but in the end without success. We won`t stop trying it as it might be our best chance to win stages.

imageshack.us/a/img42/1662/rsa2013523.jpg

We are on the descent already and with still 184 riders left in this group this surely will end in the expected sprint finish. I positioned myself in a decent position and will give it another try.

imageshack.us/a/img22/9650/rsa2013525.jpg

Surprising win today. The hill and the descent were a nice combination for Natnael Berhane as the Eritrean takes the win ahead of his team mate Van Heerden. Former stage winners Janse Van Rensburg and Van Poppel follow next.
As 10th I once again was able to prove my good form and get a more than decent result. This will of course keep me in the 7th GC spot before tomorrows uphill finish.

Ryan's racing very well, but what the hell is Gonçalves doing in Team Gabon. Wink

Some of the African teams signed weird riders... Wink
Like him or Haedo for Gabon. Lang, Kvasina are other examples.

I guess it is a bit weird. On the other hand all the Europeans riding for MTN in real have been surprisingly at first as well. Wink
