Leading the teams classification after 5 stages is very funny to me, that really accentuates how active and attentive we've been this race!
Again we lack just one or two years worth of extra experience to make it to the finish with the break, but Madouas and Ganna still did amazingly well to stay up there as long as they did.
Undoubtedly they are making a strong case for themselves this season when it comes to future training plans!
Surprisingly, we're also still looking decent in the individual GC, with the upcoming TT a chance for Ganna to put more time into the other U25 eligible riders to maybe hang on for a Top 5 in that classification at the end?
I could surely see the peloton staying together until the base of the final climb on the last stage, or maybe he even tries another breakaway there to ensure he will only lose time on the climb to the finish?
Alternatively, Mager will lose time in the TT and could be THE rider to help get into a break on that day and sneak back up in the GC.
First of all, we have two flat stages which are surely targeted by many teams now that it's easier to catch the breaks than it appeared to be most of the time this race so far.
I'd love to see us be in the mix again.

There's just one flat stage though as the other is a TT

Nice try from Miller and while it not work, he still did very well with a podium finish. I really like his aggressive racing, that he has shown before. A nice late addition in transfer season he was. Breakaways help us with the team's classification, too. Now we need Haig to deliver in the key stages...

Safely through another stage. Had hoped that Wurtz would be able to hang on, but not a bit surprise that he didn't. Hopefully an easy stage today, and then Phinney can show himself on the TT.

Another brilliant stage by Vosekalns. I have no idea why but this race is an annual surprise for Evonik.
A Big Thank You To All MG Reporters!

I guess that is how to build a train - Also how to fuck up a train - but fucking it up in the best possible way. Getting a 1-2 here is just amazing. Petit and Weber putting in big chunks of points for us here, and no stupid time gaps to Ioannidis either.
It will be great to see what he can do on that long ITT. Obviously dropping some places in the GC but how many?
Also it will be interesting to see if Vlatos spent a lot of energy in the chase today (Can't tell) or if he saved himself for another stage result.
So far a very profitable race despite us really having a weak lineup.

Congrats SotD, quite the double that.
Another solid stage for us, safely through it and hopefully some energy saved for Phinney for the TT.

Congrats, SotD and thanks for the report.
Our riders keep showing our colors, which is great. I only have to repeat though, that we now need Haig to step up his game.

Obviously was hoping for a stage win here by Vesely in this field, but 3 times in the top5 is okay as well. Too similar the top riders and he scored here and there consistenly.
Congrats on the winners (big one SotD with this unexpected double) and thanks for the report! |

Thank you for the report and the pace you post them at, Marcovdw!
Scully bringing in some minor points is nice, and another 5th place is above expectations. Really curious to see how the TT plays out now. Fingers crossed Vangstad gets a great daily form! |

Not a good stage for us. Ioannidis around what was expected obviously as he needed quite a good day to keep 7th, but Vlatos in 17th must be a result of his efforts in the past couple of stages. Seeing him win the first TT obviously makes up for this by a landslide, but it was the final chance for us to make a result in the race, so now it's just to get to the other side of the mountains and hopefully get as many riders through as possible.
With quite a bit of luck we will either join the breakaway with a suitable rider (Cataldo preferably) or Ioannidis can somehow stay in top 20. Both scenarios seems a bit far fetched but those are definately the aspects we will be looking for other than just enjoying the battle for the top positions. Many riders need a good stage result to salvage an otherwise waste of 9 racedays. Especially the not-so-succesful timetriallists.
Congrats on the win, and some strong performances here and there

Great ride by Phinney. Looks very good for the overall win now, so fingers crossed for another calm mountain stage tomorrow

Okayish ride from Haig, I had hoped for better though Dyball however continues to do well and given his solid climbing skills, here's hope for a nice backup result behind Haig.

That was a huge day for us Both Vangstad and Tvetcov doing well, giving us two cards in our hunt for a very surprising top 10 overall here. Can't quite believe it will actually happen, but they will still provide us with a chunk of bonus points, as they look good for a top 20 overall
Phinney has done well to lead this race in such a dominant way. Now sitting in the points jersey too, you could argue Grieg playe this right all the way with the rather passive racing on the difficult stages.
Really curious to see how the final stage plays out. Judging on GC stage races previously this season, I suspect, and also kind of fear, there will be a proper fight between the GC riders, as it feels like the AI in general leaves the final mountain stage to the GC riders, where they can actually make a difference, at least especially in GTs. |

The one time Brambilla tries something and it's in one of the few no successive breakaways. At least he saved something out of the GC with this move.

Good ride by Haig with some rather early moves and sticking to the group of elite climbers almost until the end. Stage result fine enough for me and moving up to 5th in the final GC definitely makes for a pleasant result eventually.
Dyball losing more time than I was secretly hoping for, but still, his 13th place in the GC is a nice backup result behind Haig. Those two results plus a stage win from Miller and a 2nd place in team's classification made it a good race for us. Really can't complain, those steady points should help us in our fight for our first Top-10 result in the PT..
Congrats to all who did well here and of course thanks for the quality reports! You reporters do a brilliant job this season (as always, of course).

At first I was really bummed that we didn't join the breakaway - if nothing else then just for the fun of it... Then I kinda accepted, that we already got quite a lot from this race already, and then it began to get quite exciting to see if Ioannidis was mentioned or not.
He freaking finishes this race in 11th GC! That is OUTSTANDING! Then I suddenly understands why we did nothing at all. The only thing that sucks is that he lost 1 spot, and thus doesn't get a mention in our TOP 10 GC results of the year. But wow. 73MO, 72HI and 73TT. Honestly I think this is the biggest GC upset we have ever done in all my years of playing the Man-Game. It's about the same level of surprise as when Tzortzakis won Lisbon Classic. Not quite the Milano-San Remo 1-2 of Ulissi and Pozzato in 2012, but in terms of GC results I don't see it matched.
Before the race started it would be pretty crazy to think that we would end up with two stagewins two 2nd places and 11th in the GC. Vlatos was obviously a pre-race stage contender as was Petit, but neither was THE favorite and we didn't have any GC contenders - well I guess we did.
Congrats on the win for Phinney - Not surprising, but nice to see nontheless and thanks for some great reports. Very consistent also, which I like

No Festina-level surprises for Puma on this final stage, but very consistent riding across the board did get rewarded with some nice points.
Dunne did the right thing and get in the break, but obviously our lineup here wasn't gonna produce a Top 20 rider in the GC even with the best strategy.
Therefore, I'm very happy with the very visible Dunne and Mager both in the Top 40, and ESPECIALLY with our supertalents Filippo Ganna and Valentin Madouas in 46th and 51st!
The latter two therefore combine for 13 points from finishing 3rd and 4th in the U25 classification, 67mo and 70mo ahead of a 78mo Ndayisenga!! Yikui Niu adds two more points there for 7th.
Furthermore, all these great achievements by our youngsters and domestiques led to finishing third in the teams GC, in a prestigious tough stage race fielding a team of 74mo and less. That could be our equivalent of a Festina upset here.
15 entirely unexpected points from that result, hopefully all the minor scoring here will supplement our Dauphine points nicely.
Congrats to Grieg for the favorite win, Phinney just doing Phinney things. It'll be interesting to see where in the rankings he can lead you this season.
Thank you very much for your reporter work Marco!
