We come here hoping for some high finishes in the sprints. Barry Markus will be at the back of our sprint train, riding his first race of the season.
Reinardt Janse Van Rensburg also rides here after impressing in San Luis. He hopes to help Markus in the sprints and ride a good TT.
The rest of our squad is built around a sprint train with Nolan Hoffman and Tarik Chaoufi being able to sprint as well.

Etoiles de Besseges Stage 1
The first stage of The Etoile de Besseger 2013 is like the following three, flat. Lots of big sprinters have taken the trip to France and will be looking to get a good start to the race. The biggest names are John Degenkolb (Argos), Francisco Ventoso (Movistar) and Edvald Boasson Hagen (Sky).
Our main sprinter Barry Markus is not on big form so today he will focus on putting Janse Van Rensburg in the best position possible while building up his form for the upcoming stages.
70kms to go
Today is looking like a strange stage with Argos – Shimano and FDJ not letting any breaks away. Bouhanni and Degenkolb must be feeling good. There are lots of attacks but none are given more than 1’20”.
We have passed through the day’s KoM sprint and an Intermediate sprint already today, but they were swept up by attacks that eventually failed. Dean (Orica) took the KoM sprint meaning he will take that jersey tomorrow. The intermediate sprint was also won by Dean.
50kms to go
Finally a break is formed. It contains Amorison (Crelan), Guillou (Bretagne), El Fares (Sojasun), Lemarchand (Cofidis) and Romero (Colombia). The French teams look keen to attack in their home race so their sponsors can have some camera time in front of the French audience.
40kms to go
Amorison easily wins the final Intermediate sprint followed by Guillou and Lemarchand. As they hit the finishing circuit the gap has grown to 2’35” over the peloton which is now controlled by Garmin, seemingly for South African champion Hunter.
8kms to go
Movistar makes the catch with their train in full flow for Ventoso. Markus and Janse Van Rensburg are on Ventoso’s wheel and FDJ also have a train going.
5kms to go
Argos – Shimano have now set up a train as well, but now FDJ have the strongest one. Markus and Janse Van Rensburg are still positioned well behind the Movistar train.
1km to go
Degenkolb is looking strong in the lead, with Turgot behind him. Bouhanni, Ventoso and Mondory are all positioned well also but a gap has appeared between them and the leading two. Markus and Van Rensburg look overwhelmed by the top class sprinters. Despite being very low on form Markus starts the final kilometer in 15th.
500m to go
Turgot has taken the lead from Degenkolb round the final corner. The home advantage seems to have given him a boost. Boasson Hagen is in third and coming strongly. Our two riders have faded and are outside the top 20. Not a good day for us.
Finish
Turgot raises his arms in celebration. A great win for him and Europcar which takes the leaders jersey ahead of tomorrow. Degenkolb takes second while Bole finishes a surprise third for Vacansoleil. Boasson Hagen and Bouhanni complete the top 5.
Further back Janse Van Rensburg finishes 21st. The sprints here are clearly a different class to the ones in San Luis so we may have to settle with minor placings ahead of the TT.

sutty: As I said I do't expect it to get better but we'll see
fcancellara & ste: Thanks, they only took 2 mins
Ian: Maybe, but it will probably be hard to last in front of the strong trains

I did some quick reports as it was sure we were not going to achieve anything on these flat stages
Etoiles de Besseges - Stage 2
Today is a lot hillier than yesterday which may suit the more punchy sprinters like Degenkolb and Boasson Hagen. The stage is still ranked flat, and the stage does not finish on an uphill though so a bunch sprint is most likely. Janse Van Rensburg has a good chance today with him having a good hill stat.
On the downhill finish Boasson Hagen flies away to take a dominant victory for Sky. He even reached 71kph! Race leader Turgot takes second which keeps his leaders jersey and keeps the French fans. Bille, Marcato and Henderson complete the top 5 in 3rd, 4th and 5th respectively.
Janse Van Rensburg comes in 13th which is an improvement on yesterday’s 21st. He will hope to improve his position further tomorrow.
| 1 | Edvald Boasson Hagen | Sky Procycling | 3h40'35 | | 2 | Sébastien Turgot | Team Europcar | s.t. | | 3 | Gaetan Bille | Lotto Belisol | s.t. | | 4 | Marco Marcato | Vacansoleil - DCM Pro Cycling Team | s.t. | | 5 | Greg Henderson | Lotto Belisol | s.t. |
Etoiles de Besseges - Stage 3
Stage 3 is a lot flatter than stage 2 so the Boasson Hagen’s of the peloton won’t have the advantage today. Expect a third consecutive bunch sprint with the usual suspects being the favourites like Degenkolb and Ventoso.
We have decided to ride for Markus today in the hope his form has improved.
Marcato takes the win today surprising many of the main sprinters in the bunch sprint, coming with incredible speed in the final 500m. Ventoso takes his first podium of the race in secondwhile Bole comes in third, making today is a Vacansoleil 1 – 3. German pair Degenkolb and Schulze round out the top 5 for Argos and Euskatel.
We make the mistake of riding for Markus and end up with a rather disappointing 26th. Tomorrow is a very similar stage so expect nothing before the TT.
| 1 | Marco Marcato | Vacansoleil – DCM Pro Cycling Team | 4h00'50 | | 2 | Francisco José Ventoso | Movistar | s.t. | | 3 | Grega Bole | Vacansoleil – DCM Pro Cycling Team | s.t. | | 4 | John Degenkolb | Team Argos – Shimano | s.t. | | 5 | André Schulze | Euskatel – Euskadi | s.t. |
Etoiles de Besseges - Stage 4
Stage 4 is the final sprint of the tour, before we head to the GC battle on the TT bikes after tomorrow. A replica of yesterday so maybe there will be another surprise winner today?
Kreder wins this one for Garmin, which seemed to surprise the main sprinters like yesterday. Blythe finished 2nd for BMC and Beletti takes 3rd for home team AG2R who haven’t done much in this race.
As for us Janse Van Rensburg finished 11th, which is his best placing so far. Now the race moves onto the GC challenge tomorrow with the TT. Good news for the riders hoping to do well tomorrow is that big favourite Boasson Hagen had to pull out injured which increases everyone else’s chances.
| 1 | Michel Kreder | Garmin – Sharp | 4h02'15 | | 2 | Adam Blythe | BMC Racing Team | s.t. | | 3 | Manuel Belletti | AG2R La Mondiale | s.t. | | 4 | Sébastien Chavanel | Team Europcar | s.t. | | 5 | Greg Henderson | Lotto Belisol | s.t. |
The GC before the final flat stage:
| 1 | Sébastien Turgot | Team Europcar | 14h58'27 | | 2 | Michel Kreder | Garmin - Sharp | + 12 | | 3 | Marco Marcato | Vacansoleil - DCM Pro Cycling Team | s.t. | | 4 | Grega Bole | Vacansoleil - DCM Pro Cycling Team | + 16 | | 5 | John Degenkolb | Team Argos - Shimano | + 20 | | 6 | Francisco José Ventoso | Movistar Team | s.t. | | 7 | Adam Blythe | BMC Racing Team | s.t. | | 8 | Alexander Serebryakov | Euskaltel - Euskadi | + 22 | | 9 | Manuel Belletti | AG2R La Mondiale | + 24 | | 10 | Gaetan Bille | Lotto Belisol | s.t. |

Janse Van Rensburg is 32" behind Turgot, a gap he and the best time - triallists should be able to overturn. A GC podium is on maybe? Time will only tell.
Next stage will be up tomorrow night

 Jaques Janse Van Rensburg
 Adrien Niyonshuti
 Joshua Edmonson
We come here hoping from a strong GC finish from Tiernan-Locke. He will hope to achieve on the two hilly finishes with support from Van Niekerk and Augustyn.
We don't bring any sprinters so it will be a couple of short reports before the Hills start and the TT in Besseges begins.

Vuelta a Mallorca Stage 1
The first stage of the Vuelta a Mallorca is flat and only 112kms which means this is a stage for the sprinters as the GC riders rest before the hills on the forthcoming stages. Favourites are Farrar, Bennati and Kristoff who will all hope to grab an early race lead.
We bring no sprinters so we expect nothing but our riders to sit safely in the pack.
Kristoff eventually took the stage for Katusha ahead of Bos and Bazayev. Our riders finished safely in the pack, and exactly will be the same is expected tomorrow:
| 1 | Alexander Kristoff | Katusha Team | 2h31'46 | | 2 | Theo Bos | Blanco Pro Cycling Team | s.t. | | 3 | Assan Bazayev | Astana Pro Team | s.t. | | 4 | Vicente Reynès | Lotto Belisol | s.t. | | 5 | Gerald Ciolek | MTN - Qhubeka | s.t. |
Etoile de Besseges Stage 5
Today is a very short stage, only 69kms. The final chance for sprinters ahead of the GC deciding TT. The favourites are the riders who have done well on previous stages, like Degenkolb or Turgot.
Janse Van Rensburg is aparrently on good form ahead of the TT. We'll see what he can do.
Degenkolb takes his first win of the tour which also earns him the GC lead ahead of the TT tomorrow. Swift came 2nd and Bouhanni 3rd but where is Janse Van Rensburg? He finishes fourth in Degenkolb's wheel which proved to be a great tactic today! Does this mean he is on good form for the TT?
The only major change in terms of GC is Degenkolb taking the lead but it will all change tomorrow, that's for sure.
| 1 | John Degenkolb | Team Argos - Shimano | 1h33'55 | | 2 | Ben Swift | Sky Procycling | s.t. | | 3 | Nacer Bouhanni | FDJ | s.t. | | 4 | Reinardt Janse Van Rensburg | Standard Bank - Aegon | s.t. | | 5 | Sébastien Chavanel | Team Europcar | s.t. |
