Race Report
Tour of South Africa Stage 1

Today's stage is counted as flat but with a lot of undulation in the last fifty kilometres, the high pace that will be being set should cause problems to those riders with an allergy to climbing! The punchers will be interested but they may wait until tomorrow's stage, so I would imagine a bunch sprint. Oh, and of course, today's stage marks the debut of Sky's Development Squad. What can they achieve?
As usual the stage started with a flurry of attacks, including a big effort from Hoogenboom. Unfortunately, Wesley didn't have the legs today but it was a good effort nevertheless. Eventually, four riders got away. Hudecek of Whirlpool the biggest name amongst them.
The gap reached nearly eight minutes before the peloton started to reel the break back in. Strangely, local team MTN left the chase to Endura, who were more than willing with the strong team they had bought here. Were they riding for Tiernan-Locke or McEvoy? Sky's youngsters were calmly sitting in the peloton, waiting for the tough finish.
With the breakaway caught and the final drag up to the line underway, it was Vorarlberg who had now taken up the pace making but Endura were lurking just behind them. On the right of the screen, you can see Oget keeping Hammarling near the front, whilst both Huigsloot and Fischer were on the other side coming towards the front.
Out of the final corner, McEvoy was still positioned perfectly on Thwaites' wheel and looked to have victory in the bag. Von Hoff, Pedersen and Obst are with them. Further back, MTN are trying to catch up but Hammarling has been blocked and it certainly looks over for him today. Because of this, Huigsloot goes for it himself.
And indeed, McEvoy did take a fairly comfortable victory ahead of Pedersen, Von Hoff and Obst, with Voss coming from nowhere to get fifth. Just behind Stefan Schumacher in sixth was Huigsloot who sprinted like a madman through gaps that didn't exist to pick up the team's first top ten finish on debut. Hammarling battled through to 14th, with Fischer in 17th. Unfortunately, a small split in the peloton meant that Thompson, who was not having a great day, lost some time, making his GC push all the more difficult.

This story looks awesome! Really like the look of it
Seeing as "I am a part of the team," and the race is in my home country, I guess I could do an interview?
Interview: Aidan van Niekerk
Reporter: So Aidan, realisticly, what do you think are your chances for an overall victory in your home tour?
Aidan: Realisticly, I don't stand a very good chance of winning. I'm not ideally suited for this year's route. I prefer the long, hard climbs more than the shorter, punchy climbs. I'd be more useful as a team mate for a guy like Alex, Mitch or Maxime, whoever is strongest on the day.
R: If so, what are your objectives for the remaining stages?
A: Breakaway. It's that simple. I'll try my best to give the home crowd a show and maybe even a stage win, depending on my luck. Don't be surprised if you see me in the break in all the other stages!
R: You were born in Pretoria, no more than 5km away from the start of today's stage. However, you grew up in George, where we finish on stage 4. That must be a big motivation for you?
A: Oh, for sure. I've lived in George since I was 9 and this year is my first year away from home. I know the area extremely well and no doubt there'll be a lot of fans and friends cheering me on. Expect me to give it everything to get the stage win. I know the final [category 2] climb up Wilderness Heights like the back of my hand. It's steep and gruesome, unfortunately a bit too short for my liking.
I also know the area around Oudtshoorn and Barrydale quite well. In fact, a few years back as a youngster I won the national road championships in Oudtshoorn, so I guess it's fair to say that it's my lucky town
R: That's great to hear! Good luck with the rest of the tour. We'll all be cheering you on into the finish in George.

I hope that we can have a Top 10 in the GC in South Africa, we're capable of that
I also hope that Wesley gets the opportiunity to ride Istrian Spring Trophy or Le Triptyque des Monts et Chateaux, they got some nice TTs

Thanks for all the comments, it was a great ride by Abel, he was just under the radar for the whole race and then came from a long way back at the end.
@aidan, thanks for that. I like the way you asked if you could do an interview and then did it anyway! Anybody else that feels the need to do something like that, maybe if you've just had a good result or just because you feel you want to give me some hints, go ahead.
ps. I get what you mean, breakaways rather than GC, we'll see what he can do!
@Jesley, you will definitely get to do some TT's, don't worry. I don't think you're down to do Istria, but the other race, maybe |

That's fine. Wasn't worried at all. If he rides Tripique, he can shine in the BeNeLux though
And it will be a fight between Aidan and Wesley; Who may get in the break.

Nicely done by the team with the Top10! I'd like to see Aidan in a breakaway tomorrow as Alex will be the leader in the stage 2 and 6 for the hill i guess. |
