Paris-Nice - Stage 3

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/JAJ/PCM0017-1.jpg

Looks like a perfect profile for me today, but main thing today is to conclude whether Thomas can follow the favourites or not. I'm quite confident about my own form, but the way I see it, Thomas doesn't have what it takes right now. I am actually in a great position to fight for the overall win right now. There's one time trial, but it's on a mountain though, which means I won't lose bucket loads of time there. Only worry is tomorrow's stage which includes the ascent of Mont Ventoux. We descend it aswell though before a flat run-in to the finish line, and looking at it that way and taking my condition into consideration I might be able to stay with the strongest climbers over.

Well after the biggest climb about midway through the day our captaincy issues were settled, in a group of some 20 favourites I was the only left from my team, with Thomas and Edvald in the next group more than 1 minute down.

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/JAJ/PCM0010-4.jpg

They would make the junction however as Jelle Vanendert led me and the 29 other favourites onto the final ascent of the day.

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/JAJ/PCM0011-3.jpg

More than anything we were just looking at each other, not willing to play out our cards, though Valverde did try and stir things up a bit.

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/JAJ/PCM0012-4.jpg

His acceleration did have an effect though as only 12 riders would make up the favourites' group as we plunged down towards the finish. These are the kind of situations I want to make the most of and I was definitely going for the win today, being one of the strongest finishers here.

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/JAJ/PCM0013-3.jpg

I didn't find myself in a perfect position though as Nocentini led out Rolland, with me tucked in on race leader Velits' wheel in fourth position.

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/JAJ/PCM0014-3.jpg

Rolland was the man to beat today and if I have had his wheel instead of Velits' I might have been able to take this. But the gap was just too big when he jumped off the front. 2nd is still very satisfying though and it takes me up to 4th in the GC, ahead of tomorrow's Mont Ventoux stage. I am going to need diamond legs there.

Paris-Nice - Stage 4

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/JAJ/PCM0018.jpg

That lump on the profile sure looks a bit, ehm, intimidating. But I have to get my ass over there if I want to stay in contention. But if I actually, somehow, do that, the remaining stages are absolutely perfect for me to go for yellow. I still need to find a minute on Devolder and Velits, but why not?

Same old, same old on the first part of the stage, so let's fast forward to the part where the road started rising. I had the whole team around me the whole day, in order for me to hit the foot of this mythical giant with as fresh legs as possible. I didn't have one of my best days for sure, but with my form I was still confident as we hit the base of the climb. With 11 kilometres to the top, I was still in there with solid support.

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/JAJ/PCM0019.jpg
Hanging tough - wearing the green jersey.

The next couple of kilometres seemed endless though and I soon found myself in a major crisis, as my pulse went through the roof. Somehow with just under 2 kilometres to go, I could still eye the front of the pack. Velits was right next to me.

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/JAJ/PCM0020.jpg

Out of nowhere though, a certain wall came flying at me. Blasted!

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/JAJ/PCM0021.jpg

I did manage to recuperate myself more or less as we hit the descend and I found myself in a 36-man group, which was the 2nd Group on the road. A group of 14 riders led at this point, including Stijn Devolder, but no Peter Velits. He was in my group. If these groups wouldn't come together, me and him would end up as the losers of the day.

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/JAJ/PCM0022.jpg

Thomas, Edvald and Lars did a big job at the front of the group and at first the gap came down to just over one minute and I though the junction would eventually be made, but then the gap started growing again. With 5 kilometres to go I had to face the defeat, hopefully I will still hold onto a Top 10 spot.

Alejandro Valverde took the stage ahead of teammate Ricco, with Devolder taking over the jersey. I just got this one day wearing green aswell.

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/JAJ/PCM0024.jpg

My group finished 1'42 down, meaning I would stay inside the Top 10, in 9th place, so I'm not devastated about not being able to follow some of the best climbers up Mont Ventoux. The next two stages still provide me with great opportunities of stage wins.

Paris-Nice – Stage 5

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/JAJ/PCM0025.jpg

I suffered quite a setback yesterday in my hunt for the overall lead and the yellow jersey seems out of reach for now. On top of that today's profile doesn't encourage any big attack on my side to gain time on Devolder, who has been incredibly strong thus far. Anywho, this profile does give me a good shot at winning stage as a rather small pack will most likely settle this stage between them, unless a break stays clear of course.

They didn't though and I manage to place myself quite well for the sprint. Kenny de Ketele led out the sprint ahead of Stage 3 Winner, Pierre Rolland who had teammate Nocentini and then me in his wheel.

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/JAJ/PCM0026.jpg

Unfortuneately I didn't have the best of legs out there today and had to settle for 4th place, now just 3 points behind Rolland in the fight for the Green Jersey.

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/JAJ/PCM0027.jpg

Tomorrow is the stage I've been looking forward to the most, the finish line is located on a nasty short climb, and my chance to win some positions ahead of the final time trial, will be to put in an attack there.

Paris-Nice – Stage 6

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/JAJ/PCM0033-Kopi.jpg

Only interesting part for me today is the final couple of kilometers that rises right into the sky. I need to go on the attack here and of course my opponents expect me too. I’m under no illusion as I know I won’t pull back 3 minutes on Stijn on such a short climb, but I’m aiming to bump myself up a few placings ahead of tomorrow’s final stage and time trial.

9 riders got away early today.

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/JAJ/PCM0028.jpg

And three of them hit the base of the final climb with a solid lead as it now seems I will not be taking a stage win in this year’s Paris-Nice either. Let’s see if I can beat the crap out of the favourites at least then.

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/JAJ/PCM0029.jpg
The stage looked to be settled between Pineau, Hivert and Florencio.

Without having the best legs to roll with today, I jumped off the front after just a few hundred metres!

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/JAJ/PCM0030.jpg

I should’ve waited though as my tactical dispositions revealed themselves to be absolutely way off today. After spending a lot of energy on the acceleration itself I had to slow down a bit and then a bucket load of riders came flying past me one by one, and at this point I had nothing to respond with. The plan to bump up a few places had been changed to just stay inside the Top 10.

Jonathan Hivert of Euskaltel gave the Frenchmen something to cheer about as he took the stage today.

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/JAJ/PCM0031.jpg

Velits took 2nd place leaving Devolder with 3rd, 10 seconds behind, so I don’t think there’s much question as to who will win this race now. I came in as 14th, just about 2 minutes after Velits and somehow I just managed to keep myself inside the Top 10.

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/JAJ/PCM0032.jpg

I will to fight for it tomorrow though on the time trial up the almost mythical Paris-Nice climb, Col d’Eze.

Paris-Nice – Stage 7

This is actually a quite big day in my career as I’m pretty close to claiming my first Top 10 Finish in a major stage race. I have two riders pressing on from behind. Huguet who trails me by 20 seconds and Ricco who trails by 36 seconds. These are the guys I’m focused on beating on my way to the Col d’Eze today. It’s about 13 kilometres, so I should be able with the climbing ability I do have , to keep them behind.

The stage win was to be fought out against the top riders in the GC, so let’s skip to the Top 30, where Thomas redeemed himself a bit today and took the provisional lead.

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/JAJ/PCM0001-6.jpg

Shortly after I was up. The most important time trial of my career so far. I remember saying the exact same thing about the time trial in the 2008 Post Danmark Rundt. That one doesn’t compare at all now, even if this is “just” for a Top 10 Placing. I got some very encouraging times during the course and I was actually gaining time on Huguet. I was having a great day here.

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/JAJ/jajtt.jpg

I faded towards the finish though having put in the time trial performance of my career. Suddenly Huguet had the upper hand. He hadn’t gained the 20 seconds yet, but he was getting there. The last kilometer was a blur I just put in my last effort and trusted I had done enough. Brian Holm then gave me the news. Huguet had completed the climb in 20’59. I looked a the clock hanging above the finish line. 21’16! I had managed to keep my inside the Top 10 my just 3 seconds! I wouldn’t bother celebrating it, after all it was just 10th Place. It was just nice confirmation to finally get a result like this.

At this point Fothen had the best time. The surprise package of this Tour, Pierre Rolland came close, but in the end he didn’t even Løvkvist. Still a nice time though.

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/JAJ/PCM0005-5.jpg

Valverde then took over the lead, beating Fothen by 10 seconds.

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/JAJ/PCM0006-6.jpg

Lars Boom finished in a fraction of a second slower than Valverde, before Samuel Sanchez, clocked a time 20 seconds slower than his countryman.

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/JAJ/PCM0007-6.jpg

2nd in the GC, Peter Velits, who has had an incredibly tour actually took some time on Devolder today, but noway near enough of course. 3rd Place for Velits today.

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/JAJ/PCM0009-5.jpg

Devolder then took 8th Place, 14 seconds down, but most importantly he is the new winner of Paris-Nice, after two years of domination by us.

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/JAJ/PCM0008-2.jpg

Here’s confirmation. Jonas Aaen Jørgensen in 10th Place!

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/JAJ/PCM0034.jpg

And a Top 10 Finish was what I came for. I didn’t come here to be team captain so I think I can be pretty pleased with what I’ve achieved eventhough I’m still missing the stage win here. Next year maybe?

Jonas’ Corner
– Milan-Sanremo Special

A lot of things in this race will be like last year’s edition. Again, there’s no Poggio and there’s no Cipressa. Instead the organizers have chosen Pompeiana for the second consecutive year to be the place where the puncheurs will need to make their moves. Another similarity is the roles within the team. After I showed off some splendid form in Paris-Nice I will be Co-leading the team alongside Edvald, but we’re just two in a long line of High Road riders, who could make their mark on this race. Also lined up are Kim Kirchen, Greg van Avermaet, Lars Bak, Burghardt, Cav and Kairelis. All strong, in-form riders.

So far the plan is mostly based on Edvald though, but it all depends on what happens at the Pompeiana climb just outside Sanremo. If some strong riders decide to go it will be my or Kirchen’s job to tag along with any action there. But with Edvald’s form a mass sprint would be a dream scenario for us. Also if Cav manages to stay with the bunch over the climb.

As I’ve told before I would like to win this race some day. I’m at a very high level right now, even stronger than last year when I finished in 6th place, and everything could happen, so I won’t rule out that I could be standing on the podium when the dust settles. It’s a big race and after all the success I’ve enjoyed in Italy, I’m actually receiving a lot of support from the spectators here. Surely that has also something to do with me living here.

Wish me luck!

If we don’t come away with a big result here it will be very dissapointing. We have invested a lot of power into this race by lining up with a team as strong as this one. Edvald is one of top-favourites to win today with me being one of the outsiders. But as I told about in my last blog, we have 6 other very strong riders waiting for their chance to shine. From the start we were all told to keep Edvald out of the wind, so I’m not on level terms captaincy wise right now. Hopefully I’ll get some nice response from my legs during the course. Otherwise I will be tied to helping out Edvald.

Me and my teammates next to the Mediterranean.

With 60 kilometres just as the small hills commenced, CSC’s Sebastian Langeveld attacked with some other strong riders countering. Greg van Avermaet followed the move. At this point Greg and Edvald had told they were feeling great today. Me on the other hand wasn’t having the best of days, so it seems with Greg up the road I won’t be allowed to ride my own chance.

Langeveld started the action.

Four riders made up the front group as they quickly swept past the early attackers. Greg was in there alongside Gusev, Langeveld and Ballan. Hoste had also gapped the pack trying to come across to the leaders. I was anxious to try something but of course wasn’t allowed to with van Avermaet in a solid move up front. Instead I was just supporting Hagen should things come back together.

Up the Pompeiana with about 25 kilometres left, the four leaders had more than one and half minute on the pack.

I just wanted to jump off the front but that would be a tactical suicide and Greg stood a great chance of something big could this group stay clear. 8 kilometres to go now and the leaders still had 1’22 on the pack. They would make it!

Greg led the sprint out!

Me leading the pack behind to set up Hagen for a secondary position.

We could see the leaders up the road as we hit the home-stretch but as I was told to lead out Edvald I couldn’t really keep focus on what was going on up front. I did my job and sent off Edvald in a great position to take 5th place, and then found some time to look up.

Greg did it! We have won Milan-Sanremo.

Hagen took 5th ahead of Boonen and I concluded a great day by picking up 13th place on Via Roma. Eventhough I would have liked to be the one to receive praise for the win today I’m really glad that the win at least went to our team and you got to hand it to Greg, he rode an amazing race!

Next up for me is Criterium International.
