Race Report
Joe Martin Stage Race Stage 3

The third stage is very short but a small rise in the middle will keep it interesting again. It should still end in a sprint though and the pace will almost certainly be extremely quick due to the short length of the stage.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0014_zpsd41d39f8.jpg
Today's breakaway was seven-strong and all of them were surprised that that many riders had been let go by the peloton on such a short stage. Sky's representative was Zabala, who was having his first attempt at a breakaway in his pro career. The rest of the riders were weaker riders who were just trying to get some TV coverage. The group managed to get three and a half minutes clear by the intermediate sprint.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0015_zpsee82da95.jpg
It was then that UnitedHealthcare hit the front with the savage pace that ripped the race apart yesterday. The gap quickly came down to a minute as they entered the last twenty kilometres and other teams, like Team Type 1, joined in the chase. Closest to the camera is Oget, wearing the red climber's jersey that he will be taking home with him to California tomorrow.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0016_zps9f229f15.jpg
As the break crested the final rise with five kilometres to go, Zabala kicked and left the others behind. The peloton had slowed down a bit after Kocjan had crashed and his team had stopped working. The gap was still only forty seconds, though, with the sprinters' teams getting into position at the front. Bracco had great legs today and would be lead out by Jaquin.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0017_zps4431b860.jpg
And what a ride by the Colombian climber! Zabala finished half a minute before the sprinters after a brilliantly timed attack. Forster was the winner of the sprint ahead of Radochla, Colli and Keough, with Bracco barging his way through to eighth. Jaquin was also fourteenth on a much better day for the team.

The team head back to Britain now, the North East to be specific, for the Tour of the Reservoir. This is another tough race with plenty of climbing to be done and anybody that wants to win this race will need to be very strong and be able to cope with the hills. It should end in a sprint but with so much undulation, you never know if any attackers could stay away.

The Team

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0019_zps47315548.jpg

Hammarling will, as usual, be hoping he can hang on for the sprint but as he showed at the Maldon Dengie Tour, he can also attack if needs be. Fischer and Gilbert will aim to use the hills to their advantage and Jones also has the ability to attack over the climbs. The rest of the team don't really have the necessary shape to compete, so will be trying to go on the attack or help their leaders.

This produced one of the most exciting finishes i've ever had, hope this can get close Smile
The hills matter but Hammarling should hang on.
Only one small graphical issue...

Not the race Jaquin hoped for, surely, but a decent last stage at least. good luck for the other riders in Britain!

Race Report
Tour of the Reservoir

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0020_zps548268bd.jpg
Four riders got away right at the start and for some reason, nobody else was interested, so this foursome was the break of the day. Hoogenboom was the rider for Sky, joined by Townshend of Raleigh, Sweeting of Kenda and Jorgensen of Glud and Marstrand. Wesley was having to do a lot of the work but Townshend was helping out, as you'd expect in a British race. Nevertheless, they built up a gap of seven minutes at one point.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0022_zpsde5c5f21.jpg
Unfortunately, thanks to good work by Endura, Christina Watches and Bank BGZ, the breakaway was caught with around fifteen kilometres to go. Hoogenboom had given it everything but it wasn't to be and he gave his remaining supplies to Hammarling. Instantly, there were a couple of attacks but they didn't get anywhere.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0023_zpsdee23285.jpg
However, Brambilla (Leopard-Trek) did get away and Fischer was sat right on his wheel. As soon as the Italian had stopped his attack, Alex powered straight past him and gave it everything he had. It was a fantastic, selfless attack and ensured the pace in the peloton stayed high, which was just what Hammarling wanted. It was never going to work for the Dane though, and he was caught with just under three kilometres to go. Now it was up to the sprinters to fight it out.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0024_zps0e01ae79.jpg
Hammarling waited until the steep part of the final climb to kick and he flew straight past Eeckhout and Smolen to take, finally, his first pro win after numerous top fives. A superb leadout from Jones and Huigsloot did not go unnoticed by Johan, who went straight to his team mates for a big group hug! Abel finished ninth, with Gilbert, Jones and Fischer in the top 25.
