The team's US campaign gets into full flow now as the riders head to Arkansas for the Joe Martin Stage Race. It's a strange race, with a very short mountain time trial to start us off, ahead of a tough stage that should end in a sprint, but has a tough climb in the second half of the stage. The final two stages are both very short and should end in sprints but the final stage is undulating so could be extremely hectic.

The Team

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0005_zpsb2940ce4.jpg

The team here is packed full of climbers, so it's a shame that there is only one mountain TT to take on. Nevertheless, we hope Van Niekerk and the others can get us a good result on stage one. The GC, though, will probably be decided in the sprints because the time gaps will be so small. Jaquin is the team's sprinter but with the US calendar being so competitive, it will be difficult for Luc to get right up there. As usual, our main goal will be to be aggressive every day and maybe try for the KoM jersey, which Oget will of course be keen to pursue on home soil.

Good luck to riders going to America

Good luck to all the guys in North America... I've heard, Diego's family took a plane to watch him racing for the first time out of his country, so I hope he can help his team to have a great performance.... or maybe show himself in a stage...Wink

Hopefully, Luc can shine on his first race as a leading sprinter. Stages two and four could suit him with his good punch.

Although United Healthcare is very annoying in USA races most of the times, I think we can achieve great things in the Joe Martin Stage Race Wink

Also, I want to see Wesley's stats now Pfft

A very short climb against the clock. The time gaps will be so small, it won't make any difference to the GC but there's still a stage win up for grabs.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0001_zpsc3d75945.jpg
One of the first big contenders out on the course was Sutherland for United Healthcare. He went quickest by two seconds at the finish, which is quite a lot when you consider last place was only eight seconds down at this point!

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0003_zpsf054e424.jpg
Christina Watches have brought a strong team here and both Sorensen and Rasmussen went fairly quick early on before sliding down the standings to just outside the top ten. Their leader, Schumacher, was the only one close to Sutherland today but had to settle for second, with the same time as Rory.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0004_zps4cdc1edf.jpg
Marc De Maar was the quickest rider from Curacao today, (again!) but he had to settle for fourth as Rubens Bertogliati just pipped him at the death. Optum also had a good day, both Creed and Haga setting great times. Despite Bertogliati's good performance, it was a poor day for Team Type 1, who should be doing a lot better in a small race like this.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0006_zpsfd587b1b.jpg
It was also a fairly poor day for Bontrager, with Dombrowski only managing ninth, despite being the best climber here. His team mate, Craddock, was right behind him in tenth. The other riders in the top ten were McCartney and Baldwin as the American teams, predictably, dominated.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0005_zpscf73bad7.jpg
It was a bloodbath for the Sky Development Team today, with an absolutely disastrous day that only got marginally better when South African Van Niekerk hit the slopes. The promising climber went three seconds down on Sutherland to finish nineteenth. A special mention must go to Luc Jaquin, who performed exquisitely to pick up the wooden spoon. Yes, that's right, last. Things can only get better, right?!

I have absolutely no idea! I think the PRL stat was more important than MO because a few of the guys near the front can't climb for toffee and obviously Bracco can't TT at all. There was nothing wrong with his ride, his yellow bar ran out right on the line, but it's just one of those stages. Rolling Eyes

Jesleyh
I noticed that this particular TT gives some strange results. Really hard to win, even with very high MO stat. Also, the differences are way too small.
I simulated it once, and then there were huge 1 minute+ results Frown

Anyway, good luck on the other stages guys Wink

A long, rolling test that should end in a sprint but you will need to be able to deal with the many small hills to compete. The final kilometre is also a slight, uphill drag which will kill off the riders who have used too much energy to get there. Should be interesting.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0007_zps94f17363.jpg
Oget was, as usual, straight out of the peloton from the gun. He was eventually joined by five others, including Stuyven and Powers. Maxime was comfortably the best climber in the group though, and he easily picked up maximum points at the first two KoM sprints. After a while, the peloton slowed down and allowed the escapees to build up a lead of six minutes.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0009_zpscdc074ff.jpg
But just before the long second category climb, NSP, Exergy and United Healthcare hit the front and started to crank the pace up. It had already been a tough day in the saddle and many of Sky's youngsters had used a lot of energy already. With this big climb approaching, the team were in trouble but at least Jaquin, Bracco and Van Niekerk looked alright.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0010_zps03c6303d.jpg
With ten points available at the top of the climb, Oget left his slower companions behind and set off after the KoM jersey. By the summit, he had gained two minutes on the other five, who were now back in the peloton anyway. He takes the lead in the climbers' standings but could he get something even better?

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0011_zps1b400dc8.jpg
Well, sometimes, it just isn't your race! Going UPHILL (!), Bracco crashed and dropped out of the peloton. He tried to catch back up but he had wasted all his energy and that was the end of what had been a promising day for the Italian. Now it was left to Jaquin to try and get a result as the only other rider in the peloton for Sky was Van Niekerk and he is certainly not a sprinter.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0012_zpsdc41c82f.jpg
Oget was caught with twenty kilometres still to go and so the bunch sprint was inevitable. What was left of the peloton got extremely strung out as the final few kilometres were into a strong crosswind and as they hit the very wide, uphill final kilometres, Bertogliati was leading but had gone way too soon. Jaquin had tried to follow Fred Rodriguez but he just didn't have the legs after such a tough stage. Who would prevail in this hectic sprint?

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Sky%202012/PCM0013_zpse49e70b4.jpg
It was a blanket finish but Keough just pipped Reihs and Colli to take the stage win and the leader's jersey. Schumacher was fourth ahead of Rodriguez, with Jaquin fading to 27th on an incredibly difficult day for the team. Van Niekerk came home in 55th, the only other Sky rider in the peloton. This is a much harder race than anyone could have expected. It feels like the Tour de France!
