Joe Martin Stage Race doesn't have a real mountain/hills stage. It got a short 4km climbing TT, but the max difference is about 10 seconds there I think... Wink

You're right, but according to this, but stage 2 with a strong pace could be an interesting one

Race Report
Circuit des Ardennes International Stage 1

The race opens with the easiest stage, a flat run that takes in just one serious climb in the last forty kilometres. This should be a sprint stage; let's hope for better than Normandie for the team.

There were an astonishing amount of attacks today, with about forty riders trying to get into the break. This kept the pace high but eventually, six riders broke free of the peloton. The best rider in this group was Fajt but none of them really had a chance of staying away. Sky weren't bothered with the break today, prefering to save their legs for the tougher stages ahead.

A familiar sight this season as Cofidis, Chipotle and Saur Sojasun got on the front to bring the escapees back. Endura chipped in from time to time aswell and the gap soon came down from the seven minutes they had built up. As in Normandie, the big French teams had brought some top riders including Moncoutie, Dumoulin, Duque, Pelucchi, Lemoine and no less than the leader of the UCI Europe Tour, Julien Simon!

With the break easily caught, the leadout was frantic with lots of teams trying to get their fast man up to the front. The winning train though was Cofidis who had Duque leading Dumoulin, with Downing in the best position on the little Frenchman's wheel. Then came Huigsloot, who had been brilliantly dropped on Downing's wheel by Hoogenboom, whose leadout skills are improving all the time.

There was no surprise as the veteran Englishman claimed victory easily, ahead of a magnificent Huigsloot, who outsprinted all of the guys who thumped us so convincingly in Normandy! Pelucchi was third, ahead of the rapidly closing Simon and Reinardt Janse Van Rensburg, with Dumoulin fading to sixth. What a great start for the team here.

Race Report

The Queen stage and it's a brutal one. Climb after climb after climb, quite a few of them steep, before a final ascent, which is relatively easy by comparison. This is definitely one for the punchers but the finish isn't quite hard enough to create huge gaps and some of the punchier sprinters could definitely stick in there. Fischer will be Sky's leader today but he will have to compete with the likes of Tiernan-Locke, Moncoutie and Simon.

The break of the day was just four strong; Sano, Bideau, Nielsen and Boeve. These riders were clearly wanting to give their bodies a beating over such a tough stage. They built up a lead of five minutes but the constant attacking for the KoM points was visibly tiring them.

The first time over the first category climb, four more riders attacked out of the peloton and set off after the leaders. Mayer, Ostergaard, Muller and Bajadali the four trying to pull off a long attack and they did catch the leaders eventually, along with two later attackers, Dennis Van Niekerk and Tulik.

Behind all this, Endura were well in control, their whole team working on the front to bring the now ten man group back. Sky were sitting quietly in the ever reducing main group, taking it easy. Unfortunately, the stage was just too hard for Kim Yoo Suk, who dropped out the back way before the end. Zabala, Jaquin and Bracco were surprisingly struggling aswell, while Hoogenboom was again performing well above expectation, comfortably dealing with the pace on the climbs.

As we hit the final ascent, the escapees had been reeled in and it was Tiernan-Locke who launched the first attack. On the left of the picture, you can see Fischer staying near the front waiting for the right moment to launch his sprint. The French were, as you would expect, en masse at the head of the peloton, with Galland the first to get a proper gap to the rest. Could he hold off his team mate Simon and the rest?

He did it fairly comfortably as Saur Sojasun put two riders in the top three. However, Simon wasn't second as he had to make do with third, behind a very fast finishing Alex Fischer, making it two second places in a row for the team. An amazing finish from the Dane. Downing was fourth ahead of Dumoulin, Janse Van Rensburg and a disappointing Tiernan-Locke. Incredibly, despite there being several big gaps, everyone down to 52nd place got given the same time, including Huigsloot, who remains eight seconds off the lead along with Fischer.

The team time trial is a new challenge for the Sky Development Squad and indeed it's the only one we will do this year. With the teams on show here, we won't be expecting much and, unfortunately, it's almost certain that our riders will drop out of GC contention. The main problem to overcome will be the fact that four of our riders can time trial, while the other four can't, but the stronger men will have to manage their effort.

Most people's favourites for today's stage were British outfit Endura. The likes of Dempster, Bibby and Downing are strong in this discipline and they set the quickest time when they crossed the line, but they were the first of the big teams so it was difficult to know how good their time was.

Following Endura were another British team, the Sky Development Squad who are incredibly inexperienced in this discipline but they did really well, starting slowly before the stronger rouleurs raised the pace to a level they were comfortable with. The white jersey of Fischer wasn't enjoying himself and couldn't hang on at the end, nor could Huigsloot who was level on time with Fischer at the start of the stage. Despite their GC hopes going up in smoke, the team were more than happy with a time 33 seconds slower than Endura, placing them provisional second.

Saur Sojasun had the yellow jersey to look after and they tried as hard as they could to keep it on Galland's back. They did well, clocking in five seconds behind Endura in second. Europcar, meanwhile, struggled and couldn't beat the time set by Sky's youngsters. Infact, they were a whole 15 seconds behind the TTT novices. An amazing result.

But Endura wouldn't take the win today as South African team MTN-Qhubeka pipped them by two seconds to put themselves right on the verge of victory. With just one team still left to finish, it looked like Janse Van Rensburg and co. would be able to celebrate a great win.

Could the final team, Cofidis, knock MTN off the top? It was very close but no, they couldn't, setting virtually the same time as Endura to finish in second place. All this meant that Sky finished in a superb fifth, 35 seconds off the win. Downing takes the yellow jersey back off Galland with the entire top 27 filled with riders from the top four teams. Huigsloot is the best of the rest in 28th but the GC hopes are sadly over for the team.
