That's due to Chavanel's efforts. Had he not been on Cancellara's wheel, they would not have caught him. |

I agree with that. Too bad he had to wait for Boonen. |

Even Cancellara can't win against a chasing group of 60 men.
Also, Chavanel hanging in his wheel didn't help him much either.
I hoped for this scenario, a race exciting till the END, not until 20km of the finish line.
Really great race. Everybody was dead at the end. The pace of the race was very high.
And while it looks like a not so hard edition with the big group coming back all the time, it really WAS. Every rider interviewed after the race was saying how incredibly high the pace was.
Cancellara had cramps, Gilbert complained he had cramps in the sprint. I'm sure Ballan had cramps (he had to let go at the end), and riders like Flecha and Boonen were empty at the Bosberg...
I'm glad to see Langeveld up there, he wasn't good at the climbs, but somehow recovered everytime on the flat parts. Seems he has gotten a big engine.
Boonen was good, but not super, and that also showed. But I think he will be super next week.
Cancellara, well, maybe not tactically perfect, but everyone was racing against him in the end. Still the top favorite for Roubaix, but I think if Boonen improves the way I think he will, it will be a super fight, and not a 50km solo. |

That was a classic edition of a classic race.
Absolutely fantastic.

I managed to register the last 50 km of the race and didn't get spoiled before watching. Unexpected. And, the recording worked well, unlike, my 6 Hours of Le Castellet (the Le Mans series race) which is struggling to replay.
It looked like Chavanel has been playing Boonen's card all race long, and Boonen played his own (except when he didn't relay Flecha with 2 km to go). That's a shame, as Chavanel looked much stronger than Boonen today. Should have played his own card, but when can you do in a Belgian team when you've got a Flemish leader ?
Also FDJeux working their ass off to bridge on Cancellara & Chavanel, is just beyond comment...
Nuyens & Cancellara ? I'm still amazed by the Riis effect. Those Winter camps when they play commandos in the forest, that can really change a rider.

Also, look at 8th place. Scheirlinkx is the living proof what a rider can do when he finally gets a team around him.

Scheirlinkx, Nuyens... And suddenly you've got to remember Moncoutié's words... |

Just remembered something I had read before the race:
https://velonews.c...99t_166475
"Can Fabian Cancellara do what Eddy Merckx couldn’t?"
The articles compares 2010 Cancellara season + 2011 before RvV and Merckx 1969 season + 1970 before RvV and shows a lot of similarities. And then says that Merckx couldn't win 1970 RvV, being beaten in a sprint finish by two other riders.
Cancellara was also beaten in a sprint by two other riders. Note: the articles continues by saying: "The following Sunday, Merckx won Paris-Roubaix in a trademark solo break, five minutes ahead of Roger De Vlaeminck and Leman."
So, I guess... history proves Cance will get Roubaix hat trick next Sunday? Hope so, but hope it isn't like Merckx (5 minutes ahead of 2nd place)
Just thought in sharing it here.

Are you kidding? He was just barely able to take Cancellara's wheel. |

just watched a race final km again..
1. Nuyens was total ass there.
2. That was Riis check and mate against Andersen. Andersen had 30% stronger rider..but he failed and totaly.
3. Poor Chavanel..he was riding in wrong team on that day. |

You don't win the Ronde van Vlaanderen without deserving it.
Nuyens wasn't the most 'televised' man of the day, but apparently, he was the smartest.
Cancellara messed up by attacking too much, relaying too much etc. Chavanel? Wrong team, dude |
