Hmm... Guess I've never seen a cobbled stage - in particular with "just" medium cobbles - yield so huge gaps. Guess the pack just abandoned at some point.
Looks like our GC podium target is pretty much out of reach now. The good thing is that both Schmid and Küng did well, finishing both in the Top 15. At some point, I was hoping for more by Schmid, when he was in a group with Pidcock among others. They really should have pushed to drop Wirtgen in particular...
So Küng should be in good position - Top5-7 I hope - after the ITT. Hopefully Schmid won't lose too much time, and then make the race crazy hard with Vansevenant, Stannard, De Bie et al. He's the best climber among the puncheurs, which might be useful on the final stage...
Up front, Gerts looks like the most probable winner now, he definitely shouldn't get dropped on the final flat stage now. But our task now will be to make it two really tough final stages, we'll see what we can get.
Congrats anyway to Rabobank, Gerts definitely the smartest rider here!
Thanks for the report!

Really impressed to see Stannard finish in the top10 of this stage. Congrats on the win, alex. Can we skip the TT now?

Cool to see the cobbled stage being seemingly important. Sucks that Siric was nowhere near the front of the race. At least Lammertink gets us some points.

Still in a very good position after the time trial. Hopefully the yellow jersey will stay in the front in the flat stage and not get caught in splits

So, we go into the hilly stages with a 7'30" Higuita deficit towards the yellow jersey, sounds great Guess the AI didn't really look at him as a GC/important guy, since his best possible cobbled domestique went in the breakaway. Surviving or not will be close until the end this way.
Big race so far for Rabobank and Grieg in that regard, congratulations to both gentlemen! And thank you for a massive report on stage 3 and yet another sublime TT report on stage 4, Ulrich!

Thank you again for your consistent reports, UU. Enjoy reading them all!
Very good point made by alex after the cobbles stage regarding more teams getting dragged into the fight to avoid relegation. Nailbiting!
For us, the TT wasn't meant to be this year neither. Not a surprise, but I will forever be hopeful It's just a pity we come away from the two cobbles stage with basically nothing, with Anderberg not being able to finish in front of the big group. I'll be positively surprised if he can stay inside the top 10 GC on the final two stages. There's a lot of very solid puncheurs behind him. At the same time, his biggest challenge will be to be able to hang on to a similar group that was on the cobbles stage on the hilly stages. That's far from given. |

Expected slightly better from Aleotti and Malecki in the TT, but definitely not terrible either. They are still in ok GC positions and their strongest terrain is coming up.
There are some riders ahead of them in GC that they might overtake if the hilly stages are selective. But there are also some stronger hilly riders behind them.

Can only echo DD, expected a bit better from my riders. In particular Rekita was awful, given that cobbles didn't really seem to matter.
Küng and Brunel lower than I was hoping, so it's just 9th place for Küng in GC now. Schmid lost slightly less than the minute I expected, so it's full attack now!
Thanks for the report, congrats to SN.

Think we're in about as good a position as we can be now. It will be tough to hold a top placing through the hills, but we have some time, and the entire team is behind Per.

Ouch. From a pure Aker perspective, that stage made this a nothing race for us. Unfortunate to have the slim GC hopes down the drain Even before the hills |

Shame to see a split in the pack, especially after we got lucky with one in the second stage. Glad to see that Gerts learned something from that and was at the front this time (it was probably due to the leader's jersey).

TT went as expected. Not sure what to say about the split. Good for Pedersen, both in getting a good placement in the stage and some more time down to some riders in the GC. But not that good to lose the lead in the team GC and that the best of my hilly riders also lost time, considering some depth scoring. Fingers crossed that Pedersen can hold on now.

Cool to see our loanee Girmay run of with a stage win! Not been as easy season for us, so we’ll take each little piece of success we can get. Let’s see if we can build on this for the final stages.

Malecki missing the split is pretty painful, but on the other hand it helped Aleotti gain five GC places. If the hills turn out to be selective, this could become a good race for him.

Awful stage. Bol as bad as most of the year, and the team with one of the most stupid stages. Sucks.

A great day for Per all things considered to stay in the group as long as he did an limit losses. He's definitely at risk of tumbling down the standings tomorrow still though. Need it to be a relatively passive day, which I don't think we can expect.

Surprised to see Pedersen and Gerts finishing in the same group given there were gaps created today. I don't know if Gerts had a bad day or Pedersen a good one, but we are still in very good position going into the final stage.
