It's annoying that there's not really anything we can do to fix the extent to which TTs are so variable.
Can't be surprised of that really using last year's engine...

Surprise is a very different emotion to annoyance! I had the impression that TTs are no better in later PCMs, which in turn introduce other differences - but that's a topic for a different thread.

Good by Viennet - Sicard doing worse than Quintana is rather ... interesting. |

Yeah, TTs seem very skewed towards GC riders in 17 as soon as it's not pan-flat.

At least Saber tried. Still disappointing we didn't get too much from two possible stage threats (Saber and Durbridge)... well. Key days ahead now. Leading the teams classification for the last day now, but hopefully Haig will move into the U25 lead.

The split scared me, luckily it wont have any effect.
Now bring on the more interesting stages

They did it!! No idea how we got that perfect train tangled up, but in the end it doesn't even matter. Thank you boys!
I hope we can also convert this into 2-3 days in green and a good result in that final classification. A win and a podium certainly satisfied our pre-race expectations though.
The tension approaching the line with that big batch of screenshots made me fear he'd fade horribly, thanks for that Abhi
Time for Nerz to shine now after Bongiorno and Arndt showed how it's done in the GTs. The time gained on Quintana, Slagter and Carapaz should also come in handy, although obviously commiserations to those teams.

Keeping the KOM jersey, Vlatos moving up to 3rd in the GC and Vasyliv in the "frontgroup" must make this a good day. Probably the best we will have this race

Yes, apologies to everyone for missing out on Haugard being in the third group and losing time. Don't know how i overlooked that in the GC!

Messy from Van der Lijke. Too far back, briefly on a charge then fading again. 7th is more typical of his season than his Stage 1, and at least it is points.
Odd to see gaps awarded there, must have been a low time gap setting on the stage. No sprinting GC riders to really benefit though, and only a few unlucky ones.

We hade two missions on that flat stage no.1 Abal stay out of problem - achived. no.2 protect/help Haugard in 3rd GC one more stage - failed.
But no catastrof about that now in to some climbs Will be fun to see how Abal can work them this time. |

Congratulations, cio93! Also nice to see Holst Enger having a go at it again. That was a very good stage for him profile wise, but he still needed to make a result all on his own, which he somehow managed. 2nd place here is definitely something to take from the race.
And thank you for the report, AbhishekLFC Definitely a surprise to see gaps form towards the end, with luckily only a few GC riders missing out. Feel most bad about Carapaz. Hopefully he isn't injured, can recover and maybe aim at the KoM classification or a stage win in the mountains. |

Finally a stage, where I can be totally satisfied. Haig amongst those attacking is great to see. And 3rd on GC plus the most important U25 is good stuff at this point. Now let's hope he will keep being attentive with the crucial moves and doesn't come with an off-day in particulary the hilly stages. Way to go
Lowe doing fine as well. A Top-25 would be great eventually.

It was good to see David try to defend his jersey, but we knew for well that it was never going to happen. So now we can hopefully pick some better suited riders for the upcoming stages.
Slightly worried about Vasyliv's performance here. He was in a good position to be around 15th in the GC after this stage, but ended up climbing relatively bad, to end up behind several worse riders. I guess that makes it possible for him to climb a few spots though, and if lucky get into a breakaway.

Thank you for the in-depth report, AbhishekLFC!
Galta not doing great was to be expected, but a pity about his positioning and alertness when the moves started to rain, as that's when he needs to be close to the front, to join some of them for "free". When sitting well behind, it's always going to be a massive struggle.
Kind of a relief to see him catch up with some of the riders in the group in front of him crossing the penultimate climb, like Cattaneo and Quintana.
A pity he couldn't join the group almost a minute in front though. That could have given him a very good current GC placing, and maybe some help in the positioning and that stuff on the upcoming hilly and mountain stages.
And wow, what a chance this now is for Dekker and Abal to win a PT stage race! Thought we would never see a stage racer with less than 83 mountains win a mountainous stage race again in the PT, so this I like a lot, I must say. Dekker surely must be the favourite now, mainly due to Abal's hill stat, as the latter could struggle there.
And congratulations, CT! You better just keep on stealing those big stage points from the best PT teams here, I won't complain! |

Going for the breaks was the aim fir this race and I'm glad that Smirnovs attempted it on the first difficult stage already. Getting a fourth place out of it is great and he also got enough mountain points that he might focus on that later
A Big Thank You To All MG Reporters!

Another eventful stage, thanks for the report Abishkek. I wasn't expecting so many and so wide gaps in this stage, ubt it came to be a bit more selective. Great day for Aegon and Spotify to bring themselves up into contention. Also Haig continuing his exploits as the daring underdog.
Reis again doing fine, already in the top10. I can't expect much more than this given he has 0 mountain support.
As to Orange I can only replicate ember's words :

Thanks for the report Abhishek, particularly enjoyed this one.
Too bad that Gastauer fared the worst of the break in the end, having looked 3rd strongest. Nice to see him go for it though, clearly not injured. Hope he can do something in the hills too.
Wasnt too happy with Keinath at first, but the gaps at the end worked out, so he is now 12th overall. Hope that encourages him to be a little more proactive, if we get a more decisive stage.
It's going to be quite an interesting GC fight. Both Dekker and Abal would be cool winners.
