Today the last stage of the New Zealand Cycle Classic. Running over the same parcours as yesterday the race should end in a mass sprint. If that happens, Groenewegen is almost sure of end victory.
After about 15kms, an group of eight men had formed, containing the following riders: Howson, Starchyk, Willwohl, Varley, Reis, Ostergaard, Driscoll and Gottfried. Howson hopes to become king of the mountain of this tour.
But he failed. Willwohl wins at the first KoM. Howson goes back to the pack, working for Dylan. The pace there was made now by us, Rabobank, Nippo and Madison.
Now we have time to introduce the break: Volodymir Starchyk: We saw him in the stage 2, this Ukrainian rider. He is 95th in the GC, 48 seconds behind. Rafael Reis: This Portuguese rider rides for Ceramica Flaminia. He is 55th in the GC, 44 seconds behind. Alexander Gottfried: This German rider rides for Nutrixxion, currently at place 81, 47 seconds to make up. Niki Ostergaard: This Danish rider rides for Glud&Marstrand. We can find him back at place 54, 44 seconds down. Christian Varley: This British rider rides for Node4. He is 148th in the GC, having lost 53 seconds to Dylan. Willy Willwohl: This German rider rides for LKT. He is 112th in the GC, 50 seconds behind the race leader. Jamey Driscoll: This American rider rides for Jamis. He is 108th in the GC, 50 seconds behind.

Due to the length of the stage the group only gets 3min55.
The intermediate sprint was very close, bringing victory to Ostergaard ahead of Gottfried and Starchyk.
The other KoM went to Willwohl ahead of Gottfried and Driscoll. The lead is, at 33kms to the finish, about 2min20.
With 20kms left, the lead was 1min28.
With 15kms, this was 58seconds.
With 10kms 36 seconds left.
With 8kms left, it was all over and up to the sprint trains.

He easily outsprinted the rest. Groenewegen holds on to his GC lead, making him the newest winner of the New Zealand Cycle Classic. Today he came 6th. 2nd and 3rd today were Baggio and Brambilla. Groenewegen takes green and white as bonus. KoM is Lovassy and best team is Bissell

This month, the new cycling season started. Here we have an overview of all races, since there weren't many.
The first race to be raced was the Australian Championship RR. The report can be found on the page before, it was Goss beating Sutton and Cantwell. The ITT was for Porte, ahead of Cameron Meyer and Evans.
In New Zealand, we also had national championships. The ITT was won by Sergent, beating Bewley and Bauer. The road race was for Henderson, ahead of Dean and Roulston.
A few days later, the first WT-race of the season. Stage 1 of the Tour Down Under was for Van Hummel, beating Richeze and Sutton. In stage 2, Van Hummel won again, beating Phinney and Hunter. In stage 3, Meersman won and set a great step for end victory, beating Burghardt and Bobridge. Stage 4 was a sprint again, won by Hunter ahead of Soupe and Meersman. On stage 5, with the Old Willunga Hill, Martens beat Dekker and Van Winden.Meersman held the lead. Stage 6 was flat. Sutton beat Van Hummel and Richeze. The GC was won by Meersman, ahead of McCarthy and Gadret. The points jersey was for Van Hummel. The KoM was Marcato. Young rider was McCarthy.
The Tour de San Luis was won by Castroviejo, beating Cummings and Lutsenko with ease.
The New Zealand Cycle Classic was won by Groenewegen, ahead of Holohan and Eeckhout.
The Grand Prix la Marseillaise was won by Stannard, beating Tiernan-Locke and Tamouridis.
The WorldTour rank is led by Meersman, ahead of McCarthy and Gadret. Best team is Omega Pharma-Quickstep, ahead of Blanco and Saxo-Tinkoff.
The continental lead was for Groenewegen, ahead of Holohan and Eeckhout. Leading team is Scott-Tissot, ahead of Cofidis and Madison-Genesis.
The CQ-ranking is led by Meersman, ahead of McCarthy and Castroviejo. Best team is Omega-Pharma, ahead of Blanco and Saxo-Tinkoff. Scott-Tissot is 27th.
That concludes this overview, we will return with the Tour of Qatar, with some very strong sprinters at the starting line.
Today we have the start of the Tour of Qatar, in the Middle East. This race is known for the little amount of spectators, the hard wind and the flatness of each race. Apart from a short TTT everything should end in a mass sprint. A rider like Gilbert, who is participating, would like to change that.

The race
Today we set off in the desert of Qatar, at the Barzan Towers. Since the stage is totally flat, the chance is very big we will have a mass sprint. We come here without exspectations and we will just see how good we can do. Suprisingly, the wind is not as hard as exspected.
In the wide desert, we soon have a break formed, 4 riders are in it. They are Downey, Ojavee, Lane and Locatelli. They soon build a big lead, giving time for an introduction.
Sean Downey: This Irish rider rides for An Post, and his team leader is the famous Sean Kelly Mart Ojavee: This Estonian rider, of which there are not many, rides for the China/HongKong project Champion System Patrick Lane: This Australian rider rides for the Scott-Tissot Development Team. He hopes to reach GreenEdge this way. Stefano Locatelli: This young Italian rider rides for the follow-up of Colnago, Bardiani Valvole.
In the pack, the pace is set by Orica-GreenEdge, Garmin-Sharp, Lotto-Belisol, Movistar, BMC and Argos-Shimano. Lotto rides for Henderson.
It's a mystery why, but Junya Sano, of Vini Fantini attacks on his own. He has a gap to bridge of 5 minutes.
At the first of two intermediate sprints, Ojavee beats Lane and Downey. Sano only has 2 minutes to bridge now.
The gap of the break now maxxes to 6 minutes.
With 70 kms left, Sano reaches the leading group, that still has a 5 minute lead.
At intersprint 2, Lane and Downey switched spot. The lead, with 40kms left, is still 2min52.
With 20kms left, the gap is just 1min13, so we will have a mass sprint.
With 8kms left, Lane is the last one to be reeled in.
We decide to show a sprint train, next to the main team. Groenewegen goes for a top 10.
At the line it is Eeckhout. He surprises all the other sprinters here. 2nd is Hunter , 3rd Kittel. Groenewegen is passed everywhere. He ends 13th, which is still a great result looking at our opponents. Grenda also reaches a top ten spot. Another nice thing is that Lane is 6th in the GC. The -25 jersey is for Kittel, the best team is BMC.

Today another flat stage, as you would expect. With 153kms of length it isnt very long, so it is ideal for the sprinters. With a break however you never know. The wind is really hard today, so we will probably see some riders dropping.
Due to a hard wind and many riders who want to attack we dont have a break at sprint 1. Davis is the only one sprinting for it. 2nd and 3rd are Kohler and Clarke.
After about 50 kms, we had ourselves a 5-man break. The riders are Van Leijen, Van Vooren, Sano, McCauley and Stallaert.
Here a short introduction: Joost van Leijen: This Dutch rider rides for the Belgian Lotto-Belisol. He is 14th in the GC, 11 seconds behind. Steven van Vooren: This Belgian rider rides for An-Post, the team of Eeckhout. Steven is 97th in the GC, 57 seconds behind.
[b]Gordon McCauley: This Australian rider rides for Drapac. He is 112th in the GC, 1min20 behind. Joeri Stallaer: This Belgian rides for Crelan. He is 120th in the GC, also 1min20 behind. Junya Sano: We had this Japanese rider in the break at stage 1. He is currently 102nd in the GC, 57 seconds behind.
Meanwhile in the pack, the pace is set by Garmin, Argos and Orica.
They give the group a maximum lead of 5min54.
At intersprint 2, 35 kms from the line, the lead is 2min44. The sprint is won by Stallaert ahead of Van Vooren and Van Leijen.
Due to a high pace of Argos, some riders in the back get in trouble. The lead is still 1min27.
At 15kms from the line, the lead is 1min12.
Then, a drama: A fall, with Kohler and Davis involved.

Today another flat stage, so a stage that should favour the sprinters. The fall yesterday caused a shock however, so a break might stand a chance if the peloton is too careful. The wind has no role today.
We have a break soon, with the following six riders: Van Vooren, Bueken, McCauley, Lane, Coledan and Jang.
Sprint 1 was won by Van Vooren, ahed of Jang and McCauley.
The maximum lead for the group is 5min47.
Garmin, Movistar, Argos and Orica-GreenEdge try to decrease this.
Sprint 2: McCauley beats Lane and Van Vooren.
The group is reeled in with 13kms to go. It seems a mass sprint is inevitable.
With 3kms left, our train is in the lead, but Argos is approaching.

And the winner is Fenn. In the mass sprint he is quicker than Hushovd, Phinney, |Kittel and Groenewegen, who had a brilliant day. Phinney takes over the GC.

As expected another flat stage, which automatically means sprinters as favorites. The break might ruin that. Everyone will have difficulty thanks to a very hard wind, which has finally come back.
Almost immediately, we have a breakaway. 5 riders: Law, Lapthorne, Zardini, Nishizono and Carretero.
The pack, led by Argos, Orica-GreenEdge and Movistar let the lead increase quickly. This keeps on growing.
At sprint 1, Lapthorne beats Law and Nishizomo.
The max lead is 8min04.
Here a little introduction of the riders:
Scott Law: An Australian rider, riding for Scott-Tissot. He is 50th in the GC, 56 seconds behind. Darren Lapthorne: Another Aussie, this one however rides for Drapac. He is 90th in the GC, 1min36 behind. Enrico Zardini: This Italian rider rides for Bardiani Valvole. He is 82nd in the GC, 1min28 behind.
