After his great win in yesterday's TT, the media was interested in Wesley. Wesley's father says that Wesley should stay out the media as much as possible. Wesley is just 17, and his father thinks that he can't handle too much media attention. He had to give an interview today though, there were so many interested people.
Interview: Wesley Hoogenboom
Interviewer: Well done yesterday Wesley, you were great!
Wesley Hoogenboom: Thanks, I really felt good yesterday. Yesterday's route suited me very well, with that steep hill at the end.
I: We didn't hear a lot of you until now. Who are you anyway?
W: I'm a Dutch time trialist. My speciality is a bit shorter TTs, but I can handle long ones too. I'm just 17 years old and decided to join the Sky development team, when I got rejected by Rabobank CT because they thought that I was too young to turn professional.
I: Was it a big surprise for you that you won yesterday?
W: Yes, absolutely. I aimed for a Top 10 or maybe a Top 5, but I did better than I thought. For example a guy like Schumacher seemed out of reach, especially after what he showed in South Africa. I think I owe this result to my form, since I also rode Normandië.
I: Ah yes, Normandië. That didn't go as planned, did it?
W: No, and it proves that we have a long way to go.
I: What are your plans after this race?
I'm not sure, I don't have a full schedule available. A lot of english races are coming up, and I think that the British guys get preference there. However, Circuit Ardennes is also soon, and it got a long TTT. I hope that I get another chance to prove myself there.
I: And what are you plans for the next season? Any team you aim for?
W: No, no, not at all. I've got a contract for next year too, and I definitely don't want to break that contract. I'll stay here, I'm very happy here, even though the only Dutch guy beside me is Huigsloot.
I: And the last question: Will you maintain your GC spot(2nd) or will you do everything to get Gilbert the win?
W: Both of course *laughs*. No, Gilbert's win is our preference. He's doing really good. Since we won't ride in the Netherlands this season, this is one of my home races too. Getting at least a Top 5 in the GC therefore would be great. But I will work for Gilbert, count on that!
I: Thanks for the interview, and good luck in your next races.

Race Report
Le Triptyque des Monts et Chateaux Stage 3

A very short flat stage that should make it nice and easy for Sky to maintain Gilbert's lead in the overall. The biggest threat will be the time bonus for the stage winner but with a lead around the minute mark, we should keep a decent lead for the final stage.
Surprisingly on such a short stage, loads of riders tried to get away at the start. Eventually, eight of them settled and started to pull away from the peloton. The gap only reached three minutes before Sky, along with help from MTN and De Rijke started to reel them back in. With the stage being so short there were no worries about tiring the riders out, so the pace was high from start to finish.
And with twelve kilometres to go, Sky caught the final two escapees, Oget putting in the final big effort to ensure the bunch sprint and keep Gilbert in yellow, providing he didn't do anything stupid, anyway! Now the trains of MTN, Christina Watches and CCC Polsat got to work bringing their sprinters to the front. Huigsloot was wheelsurfing today as the Sky DS told the rest of the team to save as much as possible for tomorrow.
It was a pretty surprising result as Duyn of De Rijke, clearly in great form, who took the win, ahead of the much quicker sprinters Stauff and Brown. Huigsloot was actually the quickest man in the last 500m but he just started his sprint from too far back after getting stuck on Furlan's wheel. Nevertheless, a fourth place is another great effort from the Dutch sprinter. Gilbert did stay safe and takes a 54 second lead into the final stage.

Wesley lost 2 GC positions
Gilbert still steady in front though, and Huigsloot had a good sprint

I know, but I have to finish before him on at the last stage to get it back. Since he's a good sprinter, that isn't easy

Wesley has the problem as Yoo-suk had earlier in the season. PCM is just wrong here, based on the number of wins, you should be in front of him.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

@Jesleyh, nice interview. Thanks.
And yes, Hoogenboom should still be in front of Schumacher but you never know what will happen on the last stage. It's a toughie, so Wesley might not even make the front group over the cobbles. |

I hope that that's not a hint

Race Preview
Maldon Dengie Tour
The first race of the British domestic calendar takes place in Essex with the Maldon Dengie Tour. This is a race for the hard men in the peloton, with seven off road sections over the 160km route. With the final section of mud and cobbles just over ten kilometres from the finish, it could be the springboard for a decisive attack.
The team is mostly British as we try to challenge on home soil. Hammarling is the team leader and he will aim to show his skills over the rough ground. The rest of the team isn't ideally suited to this sort of race but they will all try to support Johan in whatever way possible. The only non-Brits at the race are Thompson and Bracco. |
