Sky Development Team - May

Stage 4 will be the decider...

Also dont over-estimate the effect of the cobbles. What will happen is that all the strong FL+CB riders will attack lots in the final 20km of those stages...
I predict more failure purely because the team is not good enough... of course it does depend on the competition (pray Bagdonas and Eeckhout dont appear)

Well.. I'll be happy if Fischer doesn't come last in the GC, since he can't ride a prologue and has no skill on the cobbles. Hopefully he will be a useful team-mate Smile

Lets hope that Belgium will be a lucky place Wink

Race Report
Le Triptyque des Monts et Chateaux Stage 1

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0001-75_zpsd96f0ae7.jpg

The first stage here takes in a few climbs and a few sections of cobblestones, but that all ends quite a distance from the finish, meaning it could just end in a regular mass sprint. Sky will be doing all they can to prevent that.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0006-70_zpsa02ceb7f.jpg
Unfortunately, Sky's riders were all too far back in the peloton at the start of the day to be able to respond to the early attacks. Infact, by the time the guys had got near the front, the five escapees were already two minutes up the road. None of the five were dangerous and the peloton were just rolling along for the first sixty kilometres. At one point, the break was eight minutes clear before the peloton started to ride.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0007-65_zps37b47ca0.jpg
Only De Rijke seemed interested in chasing the leaders, as they put the hammer down for their leader Huub Duyn. Over a steep climb, the peloton actually split into four smaller groups, with many of the favourites caught behind. Although it later came back together, the guys behind had to do a lot of work and used a lot more energy than they would have wanted to. Fortunately, Sky's vigilance meant they stayed in the main group all day.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0008-57_zps7fd54645.jpg
With the escapees just up ahead, Gilbert decided to give it a go and try to outgun the sprinters. He went straight past the breakaway who were absolutely shattered and couldn't follow. Gilbert had pulled out a minute but there were still fifteen kilometres to go. It would be hard to hold everyone off on his own, but he would bury himself now to try.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0009-48_zps010722c4.jpg
But he did!! The local lad was unstoppable as he maintained the one minute advantage over the rest to take his first ever pro victory. A superb effort from Gilbert which, of course, gives him a decent advantage in the GC, which we will need to look after now. Brilliant.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0010-39_zps78ba7840.jpg
Could the day get any better? Yes it could! Huigsloot put in a massive effort to win the bunch sprint and, somehow, from somewhere, Fischer managed to come through and take third! I have no idea how to explain a day like that but a 1-2-3 for the team is absolutely incredible and we certainly have a good chance for a top result here now. Oh, and Oget was also fifth. What a performance!

What better way to leave the bitter taste of Normandie behind with some nice Sky domination in Belgium Smile Great racing from the team, and well done Gilbert.

Seems like Fischer handled the 2 cobble sections just fine Smile

Dafuq? What a great result for the team.
Gilbert will get a lot of media attention, for sure...
Wesley got 26th, but a good prologue can bring him in the top 10 I think.
We have to do everything to keep the lead. Wesley will do everything what he can do Grin

Race Report
Le Triptyque des Monts et Chateaux Stage 2

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0002-65_zps8dec2738.jpg

The race continues with a short time trial, just under ten kilometres. However, the final kilometre is on a steep ascent with a maximum gradient of 10% so it's important for the riders to keep something in the legs for the end. Gilbert needs a good ride to keep as big a lead as possible, whist Hoogenboom has bigger goals.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0001-75_zpsc79da86e.jpg
One of the favourites for today's stage was Danish TT champion Rasmus Quaade but this course wasn't to his strengths and he ended up way down. The early leader was Stemper of Kenda but he was eventually knocked off the top by Sky's first rider down the ramp, Johansson. The Swede would hang on to a top ten at the end.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0004-67_zps9d9785d2.jpg
There were good times from Kiendys, Van Asbroeck, De Ketele and Duyn as Johansson's time was pushed down the order. However, the winner of the Tour of South Africa, Schumacher, looked very good again as he flew round the course in 13'27 to go fastest by twelve seconds. Was that enough for the win?

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0003-60_zps941ac829.jpg
What's this? Two wins in a row! Hoogenboom rode like a man possessed as he just pipped Schumacher by a few tenths of a second. It was so quick, he had another Dutchman, Beukeboom, in sight as he approached the finish! Only Friedman could challenge the top two of the remaining riders but had to settle for third, nine seconds down. The final rider, Gilbert, put in a magnificent effort to finish fifth, just twelve seconds off Hoogenboom to keep a big lead on the GC.
