Good news. None of the two next stages crashed, so I have some very nice Giro action for you all tomorrow.

And just to make sure, the result of the 10th stage is at the bottom of page 17. I've got a feeling that some of you missed because I made a reply that got the story to page 18 right after posting that update Smile

A flat stage mostly equals a mass sprint finish. But with 10 stages behind them, a lot of riders are feeling fatigue and this goes especially for the heavy sprinters, but also their teams. So could we maybe begin to see a hint of weakening in teams like Milram and Discovery Channel?

img440.imageshack.us/img440/4947/1gi11oi4.jpg
Andy shared his take on the events on the previous stage with race leader Cunego, as the TV break with Luke Roberts took off from the pack.

Luke Roberts got away in a very strong group with no less than 13 other riders, who were: Engoulvent (C.A), Portal (GCE), Landaluze (EUS), Cretskens (QSI), De Kort (AST), Arrieta (A2R), Ziegler (TMO), Putsep (BTL), Van Avermaet (PRL), Bucciero (PAN), Ladagnous (FDJ), Pronk (UNI) and Aggiano (TCS). With Landaluze being the best rider in the GC in this group, trailing Cunego by 30’20”, you would think the pack would let them come through, but with 100 km to go and a gap of just above 9 minutes, the pack, led by Milram and Discovery upped the pace and began reeling in the breakaway.

img504.imageshack.us/img504/6537/2gi11an9.jpg
All Discovery can think about in this Giro is Allan Davis, as they put forward both Brajkovic and Contador to help reeling in the breakaway.

At some point the pack would have an off-day, and that day was apparently today. The first part of the reeling-in proceeded as scheduled and with 50 km to they had cut the gap to just 4’20”. But from this point they couldn’t sustain that pace, meaning the gap was only cut to 3’20” with just 20 km left to race.

With 16 km to go, Portal and De Kort attacked from the front group and they got a gap immediately. Portal was the strongest however as he managed to drop De Kort during his acceleration and ride off alone.

img205.imageshack.us/img205/1637/3gi11rl2.jpg
The pack had an off-day as De Kort and Portal seemed strongest in the leading group.

We’d hoped that Portal would begin to fade but as he kept increasing his gap very slowly, we grow impatient and asked Luke to try something. But he was all done and he couldn’t muster up an attack that would take him clear of the chasing group, where De Kort had been reeled back in.

img267.imageshack.us/img267/7396/4gi11jo9.jpg
With 5 km to go, Portal had 36 seconds on the chasers, who had 1’02” on the pack.

Portal is a decent cobbler so he knows his way around in the flat. And he wasn’t to be caught as he steered home a beautiful solo victory today. The chasers were eventually caught on the home stretch by the pack. But Roberts still managed to take home a 6th place on the stage as he was the strongest in the chasing group.

img516.imageshack.us/img516/548/5gi11wg6.jpg
Nicolas Portal could just hold off the pack as he won the biggest win of his career so far after a super individual effort.

The whole team got through without problems today. So did all the favourites meaning there are no changes in the GC. Pettachi who finished 2nd today must be a little frustrated as he finally was the strongest in the pack, but had to see his victory go to Nicolas Portal as he was only, who was strong enough to hold off the pack. Tomorrow we have a thrilling mountain stage, that will take the riders over two uncategorized mountains to the French town of Briancon, with its almost classics uphill finish. Important day for Andy.

Stage Profile

www.cyclingfans.com/giro_to_briancon.jpg

Today’s stage is in this Giro’s top 3 for hardest stages, no doubt. After about 80 km, the riders begin the first ascention of the day, the very nasty Colle dell’Agnello. It’s 21,3 km long and it has an average gradient of 6,5 %, so we’re surely going to see a lot of riders getting dropped here. At the top, the riders cross the border into France and following the descent, the riders hit the legendary Col d’Izoard 37 km from the finish in Briançon. The finish line is located at a small hill at the bottom of the descent from Col d’Izoard, so we could be in for a fascinating finish if a small group makes it to the finish. None of the favourites can afford an off-day in this terrain.

Vandevelde got away today in a big group with 11 other riders. Those were: Piil (TMO), Joachim (AST), Tomei (PAN), Facci (QSI), Hernàndez G. (EUS), Labbe (BTL), Kiryienka (TCS), Velo (MRM), McLeod (FDJ), Van Goolen (DSC) and Strauss (GST).

img340.imageshack.us/img340/1453/1gi12fb0.jpg
Vandevelde took off, While Andy’s teammates kept him safe in the peloton until the climbing would commence.

With a 100 km to go there were still 15 km to the Colle dell’Agnello, but already at this point the road rised by 3%. With 85 to go, the breakaway riders hit this terrifying climb, at this point the led the pack by 9 minutes. Christian was far better than his breakaway companions, so with 15 km to the top, he took off in a brave effort. Noone could follow the American.

img522.imageshack.us/img522/166/2gi12uk4.jpg
Christian recieved brilliant support from the Americans, who had found their way to Colle dell’Agnello to cheer on their heroes.

The pack increased the pace by hard work from primarily Lampre and they caught all of the breakaway riders except Christian on the Colle dell’Agnello. At the top Christian led the pack by 3’30”, but he had still 60 km to go.

As the pack crossed the top it had shrinked to just 59 riders. We had four amongst these. Andy of course was one of them, but also Dave, Gustov and Nicki were present. As Christian finally hit the Col d’Izoard with just under 40 km to go, his gap had come down to just 1 minute and no doubt he would be caught here.

With 8 km to the top, the first attack came. It was Simoni, who had some revenging to do after a horrible ride on the 10th stage where he lost his podium spot. Di Luca and Andy were hot on his tail however, but Cunego didn’t move yet in the pack. As Andy, Di Luca and Simoni had joined forces and were cooperating to gain a lot of time on Cunego, the race leader finally attacked but he couldn’t make the front group as he apparently didn’t have the best of legs today.

img72.imageshack.us/img72/9606/3gi12ak5.jpg
Vandevelde was quickly caught by the trio in front as Cunego was having a hard time, trying to chase down his GC opponents.

And the maglia rosa was struggling out there today. As the Andy-Group crossed the top, they had almost a minute on Cunego, meaning Di Luca was just 30 seconds shy off the leaders jersey at this point. Cunego did a good descent however as he gained a little here, but as they hit the flat part towards Briancon, he begang losing ground again.

img172.imageshack.us/img172/7750/4gi12gt3.jpg
Is the Maglia Rosa falling? Is Di Luca going to pick it up?

So far this race he has shown no signs of weakness, but today he looked screwed and he looked nothing like the rider who triumphed at the top of Montevergine about a week ago. Was the lenght of the Grand Tour coming to Cunego?

The fight for the win wasn’t very exciting. Di Luca was the strongest on the final hill and even though Andy tried to attack on the last two kilometres he couldn’t do anything about Di Luca who opened a gap to Andy and Simoni on the last climb and eventually won the stage by 27 seconds. Cunego claimed fourth 1’38” later, meaning he would lose his jersey to Danilo Di Luca. There’s really no point in mentioning who came in fourth as this Giro is going to be decided between the four riders that was in the top four today. No. 5 in the GC after this stage is about 8 minutes after Di Luca, while Simoni in fourth is 2’46” after. Tomorrow’s stage is another day for the GC riders it’s a mountain time trial, which could change some things in the infamous top four. And by the way, Zabriskie did a very good job today aswell finishing 15th to move to 20th in the GC.

img111.imageshack.us/img111/2769/5gi12rl6.jpg
Di Luca took the stage and the Maglia Rosa off the back of Damiano Cunego after a brilliant ride.

As in the Giro, we have a mountain stage today. Cuesta is still out best rider in the GC, placed 7th and today is very important if he want to retain that top ten spot he’s hoping for. The chances are slim though.

Stage Profile

www.cyclingfans.com/2007_giro_stage13_profile.jpg

The first two riders worth mentioning on today’s Time trial are the two Discovery Captains Alberto Contador and Janez Brajkovic. Brajkovic had a great start to his Giro as he came 6th on the first mountain stage to move to the very same spot in the GC. But on the very hilly 6th stage he had a very bad day and went from 6th to 41st in the GC, which is a shame really for this young talent.

img503.imageshack.us/img503/4388/1gi13hy4.jpg
Alberto Contador took over the lead as he crossed the finish line in a provisional best time.

Marzio Bruseghin pulled off a great time today as he was the leader for a long time as he came out a bit later than the Discovery boys and beat Contador by 17 seconds to claim the provisional leader. Unibet.com’s Gustav Larson, who could be heading to CSC from next season, was also pretty strong today as he came provisional 3rd. 9 seconds off Contador’s time.

Marzio Bruseghin showed off some time trial and climbing ability today sweeped aside Alberto Contador.

img257.imageshack.us/img257/3126/3gi13zc5.jpg
Igor Anton has been a dissapointment so far, while Piepoli has been a fantastic domestique for his captain Gilberto Simoni.

David Zabriskie took off as th 20th last rider and he was climbing fast. He was bit down on the first intermediate time, but as he approached the top he cranked up the pace. He couldn’t do anything about Bruseghin’s lead however as he “only” clocked 2nd best time, 2 seconds off the pace. Another Saunier Duval rider, José Angel Gomez Marchante, took off a bit later than Dave. He managed a time 25 seconds off Bruseghin and took provisional 8th at the top of mountain.

img443.imageshack.us/img443/5481/4gi13ro9.jpg
Dave rode a strong mountain time trial today as he was looking to improve on his 20th place in the GC.

As I described on the previous stage, there are only four interesting riders left in this Giro, when it comes to the GC. The first one of them to take off was Gilberto Simoni and he really put up a display out there today. Andy rode behind today and he didn’t recieve any encouraging times indicating how much Simoni was ahead of him. Simoni did clock the best time as he beat the current leader Leonardo Piepoli by a whopping 36 seconds. Andy redeemed himself on the last part of the time trial as he managed to limit his loss to Simoni to just 14 seconds to take a provisional 2nd best time.

The two riders left were the currently most interesting riders in the GC, Di Luca and Cunego. As Cunego had lost the lead on the previous stage he started before Di Luca. Before today Di Luca lead Cunego by just 28 seconds in the GC, so Cunego could do some catching up already today, and so he really did. He could do nothing about Simoni, as he was going to win today, but he clocked 2nd best time, pushing Andy to 3rd, 7 seconds off Simoni. Di Luca really took his time and he came really close to losing the jersey again, but he managed to limit his loss on Simoni to 36 seconds meaning, that he would still lead in the GC, but only by 2 seconds!

img211.imageshack.us/img211/4400/5gi13ul1.jpg
The riders of the infamous top four have no all claimed stage victories as Simoni won today’s time trial and tightened the grip on race leader Danilo Di Luca.

This result meant that Andy would just be 1’07” off the lead of Danilo Di Luca and Simoni another minute back, trailing “The Killer” by 2’12”. Dave moved to 18th in the GC as he finished 8th today. Tomorrow features another hilly stage that could see Di Luca try to regain some time on Cunego as he is now just leading by 2 lousy seconds!

Similar to today’s stage in the Giro, there was also a mountain time trial today in Volta Ciclista a Catalunya, where he hoped the Cuesta could maintain his top ten spot.

Well I've forgotten all about keeping up with Guido a long time ago, but I should have the next stage ready sometime today.
