Oh man, Glorious attempt there from Oliveira, it'spity it didn't stick. On the other hand it's a meritable stage win from a team whose GC performance was deserving this sort of coronation.
Let's mountain up again then.

At least we were in the break. Couldn't take anything from this stage but at least the attempt was there.
A Big Thank You To All MG Reporters!

No real surprise the break won this stage...
Sending Ahlstrand here have been a major failure, one last time to get anything better then a 3rd place for him if he can survive those mountains.
I really counted on better things from him here.
So far Abal have made up for that by doing better then expected hope that continues in the coming stages. |

What tshoma said
Push. Benito being the last to make the limit - could be a key to our mountain train!

Hmm, lucky Festina getting into these breaks again and again and getting great stage results. Congrats to Ferrero though!
No big loss to see Gough missing the time limit, he likely would not survive final mountain stage.
The last stages should be a lot interesting, Velits will be likely under some pressure for his 2nd place. But if Alarcon continues to struggle like in the last mountain stage, then who knows...

Damn man, that's a second 2nd (after Talansky on Stage 9). Super impressed by Simon yet again this season, a cracking ride! Really impressed, very happy. So close to a stage win though that would put the biggest cherry on our unbelievable Giro cake. Got to contain outselves, stay focused and try and deliver that final result now!

Well, hopefully there's no holding back for us as we hit the mountains again now. Galta on the back foot, but surviving that flat stage was lucky and good, now I'm just curious to see if he has anything up his sleeve, or if he'll sit tight for 15thish overall.
Congratulations to Ferrero and kind of Podium Ambition as well, proving again that you're definitely worth a place in this Giro, also looking at the GC and your best rider there. |

Have not been able to follow 'live' because of a trip but back right in time for the climax.
Henao Montoya has been very good so far. He seems to be stuck in 4th place. Velits and Morton have shown so far that they are better uphill. Alarcon in another league obviously. What made me really happy with Henao's performance is that he was very attacking on most mountain stages always attentive at the front getting involved. And also that he lost no meaningful time on any of the hilly stages for which I was a bit feared. Let's hope he can set up a daring attack on one of the final mountain stages to assault the podium but I'll be happy if he stays in 4th, one place better than last year.
Modolo has been quite a dissapointment so far but even with good all around stats his sprint stat is one to little for him to latch onto the sprint trains so he stands no chance.
Luckily to make up for that we have Kolesnikov, Ignatiev and Barbin who know the way to grap a stage win is to attack. Kolesnikov's gutsy attack on the flat on stage 10 was great to see but just did not get enough of an advantage to hold on on the final climb. Ignatiev's attack on the hilly stage was a bit of a dissapointment to me, I had expected him to turn that one into a win. Luckily Barbin still had to play his cards and he did just that. Also cool to see that he managed to outsprint Yates, something that was a bit of a problem in CT last year.
So far the Giro has been a success for a small PCT Team in the big leagues. We're even close to the team lead.
For the coming stage I still hope maybe Henao can snatch a stage win with a nice attack and hopefully that is brings him close to the podium. Looking forward to it.
Also really enjoyed reading through all these reports. Thanks for them SN.

How can I send you my lottery ticket to fill out? Congrats man!
Bongiorno did well. Slightly bad positioning when the splits occured, but then again there were no worse riders than him ahead in the end, and only minimal time lost.
I expect Monsalve, Abal and Cattaneo to pass him in the next two stages, so the fight is for 8th against Nibali with a four-minute head start.
But then again, stage 20 could give us 5-minute gaps between groups...

Meh. Looked good for a while, but didn't end that well. Another Top-5 in a stage at least. But it would be really nice to get something more out of those tough stages now. Losing the podium would be a bummer given the race so far.

Again a back-to-back triumph. Way to go Spilak, congrats! Majka so close is a bit of a letdown but what an entertaining rider!
Reis showing good form is inspiring. The duel with Galta is pretty hot atm, it would be important to overtake ember's man. Figueiredo again with the mid-stage attack is kinda frustrating, but it's always good to the see the boys trying.
Now onto the mountain TT. I'm hoping the TT stat plays a bit of a role and that Reis continues to raise his level of performance to get a bit closer to the top10.
Also happy to see Avelino finish within the time limit.

Awsome stage, hopefully the GC stys like this till the end. Though I'd fancy Henao on the podium.

Well done by Carapaz here, doing exactly what I brought him for!
Alarcon looked much better today than previously aswell, with a very strong finnish!
Now just two more stages to survive, and I cant see how the mountain TT can go to badly, as he it should be a showdown of power that!
Congratz Spilak, Henao and the whole Samruk team are really impressive here! Back to back wins seems to be a thing this giro.

Good stage for us with Laengen joining the breakaway fun and Galta doing well among the GC riders. Hopefully it's a sign for what's to come, as we need more good stages to make something from this Giro.
And congratulations again, Spilak! Quite a show from a wild card team, not something you get to see in a GT every year.
The upcoming MTT is kind of predictable, but then it's all about getting a good daily form on the 20th stage, which is looking like something of the most brutal I've ever seen |

Majka very close to take another stage win
I guess if he goes in the breakaway in the 20th stage he has a great shot at the KoM jersey.
But with Majka doing so well, Brambilla and Aru are anonymous here is shown by their current GC placing.

Happy to see my former star Henao Montoya getting a win! Congrats to Ferrero!
Velits continues strongly with another 2nd place, gaining a few more seconds on Morton, but again somehow missing that bit for the stage win. Time trial is going to be a really important one, would be great if Velits can get some exta seconds before that final insane mountain stage. Also would be great if Velits can make a further progress in sprint and KoM competition.

Can't complain with this. Kastrantas tried. He isn't strong enough on stages like this, but getting in the breaks is the best way to keep ahead and getting a decent GC for him.
Vasyliv didn't seem injured and climbed like he usually does. Losing a spot to Carapaz is OK. We can't expect to do better than him, although obviously it isn't ideel to also lose a spot in the U25 competition to him.
Moser with a good result here. Morton just can't get away although he seems very strong.
Now to lose time for Vasyliv I think. Scarponi is probably a bit better on a mountainous TT, and I can't see him beating anyone infront of him.
After that I hope to see Vasyliv keep 20-22nd in the GC, and if he can get into a breakaway to achieve it it would be very nice. But I guess he won't attack on that monster stage. Getting Murilo Affonso in a break would be our best bet I think.

Been without internet for 3 weeks, visiting family so thought I'd get caught up now.
The TTT was predictably dreadful, and Petit showed why he's better suited to flat only races here - but I had to send a sprinter here, and he wasn't terrible. Also a shame we haven't been seen in many breaks, was hoping Carthy might pop up from time to time but he's been anonymous throughout.
Still, Monsalve winning a stage and looking like he could take a top 5 here more than makes up for all of that. Looking at this field that would have been the aim, and provided he can dislodge Bongiorno he should achieve that. Little worrying to see Abal so close behind still, but I'd hope Monsalve has him covered - was secretly hoping he'd be able to hang on to the podium battle, but a little too optimistic there.
Fantastic reporting SN, have really enjoyed this race - even if I'm a little late to it! |
