+1 Totally agree, the Colombians are just too good when it comes to the road going upwards Wink

With the added nationality bonus - Colombians at Volta a Colombia are unbeatable, at least Fothen is doing well enough to restore some pride in European GC performance Pfft

Will be nice fight for Overall here, for Ryan it's about surviving and learning from experience, while hopefully JLD improves and gets better in the latter mountain stages.

Obviously yes. And with 5 home teams plus superb Colombians by other teams such as Azad it`s really hard to stay with them.

Vuelta a Colombia

Stage 6 - Socorro - Tunja (165,2km)
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Colombia_6_33-1652.jpg

The finish in Tunja is the highest placed town in Colombia. 2775m above above sea level. And still with a population of more than 170.000 quite a big town.
It`s the 3rd consecutive mountain stage and the GC is starting to form. Joe still fights for the top10 and we hope he has a better day. The long climb has a lot of less steeper sections which should be good for us as the Colombians normally prefer the very steep parts. After the short descent the finish is after a 1km Muur today. So here you can still gain time and must be well placed.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Colombia_6_36.jpg

I wanted in todays breakaway. I am almost at my best fitness level and had good legs today. So I decided to try it. And luckily I found myself in a 10 rider group having a 4min gap with 100km to go.
So maybe I can support Joe later.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Colombia_6_38.jpg

Gobernacion de Antioquia is again doing the pace. Ardila Cano was the strongest in the last two days and probably dreams of the prestigous race win already.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Colombia_6_40.jpg

We just reached the Cat.2 climb. 40km to go and still 6'30 for the breakaway. Looking good for me so far. Maybe we can even made it to the finish.
Unfortunately the pace becomes higher now as Atapuma attacks. As 10th in the overall with less than 3min behind he surely is a danger.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Colombia_6_42.jpg

The gap to him was constantly kept under 30s and 8km later a big group of favourites attacked. Colombia really proved to be good for early attacks so far and so Joe had to be there as well as we can`t lose more time.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Colombia_6_44.jpg

Baez and Alarcon created a small gap to the rest of the favourites. Then a group of 10 also including Dombrowski and Parker. Other riders are Buenahora, Atapuma, Munoz Giraldo, Fothen, Ramirez Calderon, Ardila Cano, Nino, Cardenas.
So the complete top10 plus Dombrowski and Parker are in there.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Colombia_6_46.jpg

Nearly at the same time I wasn`t able to follow the stronger climbers in the group. I had hoped to make it over the top actually but now with the favourites starting to attack, the pace increased also in the breakaway and I am not the first rider to lose contact.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Colombia_6_48.jpg

We still haven`t reached the top and still 22km to the finish.
Unfortunately the group splitted with Joe on the wrong side. Also you can see me being just a bit ahead of the first group while Baez is still solo and already caught me. Also 3rd overall Ramírez Calderón and Parker lose contact and felt back into the peloton again, where the pace is totally gone. The gap begins to widen second for second.
Dombrowski<52s>Buenahora<33s>Eastman (b)<34s>Baez
FothenMunoz Giraldo
AtapumaAlarcon
NinoArdila Cano
CardenasBush (b)
Zwizanski (b)

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Colombia_6_51.jpg

With 19km to go Joe reached me and immediately passed me. Unfortunately I wasn`t able to help him much as I was totally exhausted.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Colombia_6_54.jpg

Nothing really changed until the last km, where a tough climb expects the riders.
Buenahora and Alarcon joined Baez and together with the last breakaway riders they will fight for the win now.
1'15 later Cano Ardila fights for his lead together with Munoz Giraldo while Dombrowski follows only 14s later in the group of the remaining favourites.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Colombia_6_56.jpg

Actually it was more a fight between Baez and Buenahora with second one taking the win by just a few millimeters. Again the Colombians overperformed here and Alarcon as best other South American couldn`t even challenge them and lost more than one minute on this climb.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Colombia_6_57.jpg

But here the good news. Only Cardenas was faster than Dombrowski, who finishes on a great 5th gaining some time on the opponents. And even better. As only 10 riders of the top20 were in these groups Joe climbs onto the 10th and has quite a lot of time to 11th now.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Colombia_6_59.jpg

More than 19min!!! behind Buenahora the peloton reached the finish. They really stopped chasing as every team had a guy ahead. Bad news for Ramírez Calderón, who falls from 3rd to 11th today.

For me it was a very good day. I finished ahead of the peloton as 17th of the day and had good legs. Looking forward for the less mountaineous stages now and maybe even trying something again.
And good for the team that Joe is feeling stronger with every day. The top10 team goal is almost secured now and maybe he can even improve a bit more.

Good stage today, with Dombrowski jumping to the top-10!

Ian Butler
Dombrowski is moving up in the GC steadily Wink

Pellizotti2
Feels like reading Mangame reports with Alarcon climbing like this. It's weird to see him not winning though. Pfft

Great performance from Dombo. An overall Top 10 looks secured already, but it looks like he could actually advance another place or two as the race progresses. Will have my fingers crossed for him. Smile

Thanks all.
Actually I didn`t plan to join the breakaway before. So it was quite spontaneous. But as expected the long climb didn`t suit him very much.
Dombrowski on the other hand had a good day and some luck that all teams were represented in the first group and the peloton slowed down so much.
@Pellizotti: Not sure if I have seen Alarcon that good in any other savegame so far. So this is really a bit like the Man Game. Wink

Vuelta a Colombia

Stage 7 - Puente Boyaca - Duitama (136,8km)
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Colombia_7_1-1368.jpg

We leave the mountains behind us for some days. Not sure if the stage is really suited for the sprinters. Stuyven will surely try to repeat his performance from stage 3.
The last climb is not far from the finish, so this could be an opportunity for the breakaway or GC riders to gain time.
Our goal must be to keep Joe in the good position he has at the moment. Also being part in the breakaway would be good as the chances are higher now than in earlier stages.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Colombia_7_2.jpg

Only 4 riders in todays breakaway. Flaksis (Chipotle), Kosyakov (Itera), Aparecido dos Santos (Dataro) and Quintero (Coldeportes).
We tried to bring Avis into the group but all attempts failed today.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Colombia_7_4.jpg

Rabobank CT and Koga do the pace. While Zabel could perform well here, Mulder is very doubtful, so Koga is doing the pace for some weird reason today. Also interesting that Team Optum isn`t doing anything today although Friedman already won two stages.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Colombia_7_6.jpg

With 20km to go we reach the climb. The group is already in sight and so Parker attacks. He has good legs today and will try to join the group.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Colombia_7_8.jpg

Dale already reached the 4 after a few kilometers and even created a gap before the top. So he is going solo into the descent.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Colombia_7_10.jpg

A small moment of less concentration and I found myself behind. Just like most other riders including Stuyven as our main sprinter here.
Only Dombrowski and Craddock have been able to stay in the smaller favourite group including all top10 riders.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Colombia_7_12.jpg

Just like Parker other riders tried the same and attacked a bit later.
Osorio, Nino, Munoz Giraldo, Buenahora and Ardila Cano all created a small gap to the other GC men.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Colombia_7_14.jpg

Still 3km to go and Parker is in front. Unfortunately he wasn`t able to create a bigger gap to Flaksis and Kosyakov, who are still coming fast from behind.
The rest of the former breakaway and all other late attackers are caught by the favourite`s group again, but they are too far behind.
The win will surely go to one of these three.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Colombia_7_16.jpg

And it`s enough for Dale. With his last energy he crosses the line and celebrates his first season win. Kosyakov and Flaksis finish just behind.
What a great result for our team, whose goals are already fulfilled for Colombia and everything more is just bonus now.

Dombrowski and Craddock both finish within the ~30 rider group including all top10 riders, while I finish inside the big peloton 6min later. Not the best day for me, although I felt that my legs are good after yesterdays effort. And thanks to Dale`s performance I was able to cheer on the last kilometers.

Great victory for Dale! Nice to see all riders doing good here with Eastman's 17 place on the mountain stage is something he can be proud of. Now move Dombrowski some more places up in the GC and get Eastman in a succesfull breakaway!

A Brilliant win for Parker, just managing to hold off the two chasers

Great win with Dale Parker!

roturn
Thanks all.
It was indeed a nice surprise but as Parker was no danger in the GC this attack made sense to me and I had to try. Wink

This will be the last report for one week. I am not on my home pc until Sunday evening.

Vuelta a Colombia

Stage 8 - Duitama - Bogota (207,2km)
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Colombia_8_1-2072.jpg

Todays stage is a bit similar to yesterday although a bit harder. Again we have a climb just ahead of the finish, which could lead to attacks. As seen yesterday these can be very successful.
Another difficulty is the long distance of more than 200km starting in the 2nd week of this race.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Colombia_8_2.jpg

Our plan was to be in the breakaway. Well, obviously we failed as none of us is in the 6 rider group.
But you cannot really blaim us as we really tried hard. Charlie Avis and I tried it 2-3 times each and of course the only time none of us was well placed the break was formed. Shit happens.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Colombia_8_4.jpg

So nothing more for me to do then staying behind, getting some watter bottles for my team mates from time to time and wait for another opportunity.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Colombia_8_8.jpg

And once again Koga is doing the work. They surely have a strong sprinter in Teun Mulder. But actually more for the track events...Still they go all in for him day for day. Jsut for all Koga fans here. The Dutch team is looking good for a PCT license next season and also signed the first big name already. Prologue and cobble specialist Geraint Thomas is not happy at Team Sky as domestique and will be the main leader for Koga in the next season. This was quite a surprise for many.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Colombia_8_10.jpg

The climb is almost done and no early attacks like yesterday. But now with 1km to go some GC riders give it a go. Two former breakaway riders are still ahead but only have a small gap left.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Colombia_8_12.jpg

Again I wasn`t able to finish with the best. Only 55 riders in the first group including all GC guys and also Stuyven who fought himself over the top, but not sure how much energy he has left.
As Parker is doing the pace there to catch the attackers again, it`s quite unlikely for me to come back.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Colombia_8_14.jpg

The breakaway had no chance today and the stage was decided by the favourite group in a sprint.
Rabobank´s Minaard was fastest and wins the 9th stage.
Stuyven had no energy left and finished just like other sprinters in there in the back of the group. Also Joe and Dale finished safely in there.
And surprisingly the officials also counted my group as part of them although I was pretty sure to see a gap there.

Tomorrow we will enter the mountains again. Two hard stages again. I still have good legs and surely will try something again. I now realise that longer stage races really need a good preparation as they take a lot of your energy. It`s good to see that I can still perform on a good level as riding in a GT one day is my ambition.

Bontrager Transfer News

As I am not at my home computer there aren`t any race updates at the moment.
But I decided to make some transfer news as we reached the transfer time.
Right now I will present you some renewals and expirings.

Actually we only had 3 expiring riders this season: Ian Boswell, Dale Parker and Jasper De Buyst. As you see some very interesting riders.

www.dewielersite.net/db2/wielersite/beeldbank/1277360203PARKERDale.jpg

First coming to more positive news. Climbing specialist Dale Parker decided to renew his contract with us. This is good news for us as he is an important part of our team and is secured a leading role for next season. It`s an important step for us as he guarantees us high quality in future. On the other hand the contract only is valid if we get a Pro Continental license after this season. At the moment it`s looking pretty good being within the 20 strongest CT teams in the CQ ranking. But the season is still long and much can happen until the final decision.
So actually he has it in his own hands. If he performs well in the rest of the season, the PCT license should be probable.

Ian Boswell is a pretty similar rider to Parker actually. And as he is an American it was very important for us to renew with him. Unfortunately he planned different. Bad luck for us as we see his talent and lots of room to improve in future. Probably being only the 3rd man so far behind Joe and Dale let him decide to take a leader role in another team. Still we will see him leading our race this season like in next weeks starting Tour d`Alsace.
For a long time rumours linked him to some Spanish teams in especially Caja Rural, where he surely could have done well as they normally provide riding on climbing terrain. But in the end he decided to stay in the Continental Divison and joins the smaller Polish team Bank BGZ, which surprised quite a lot of experts. Ian told me later, that he is still young and wants to develope slowly. So going out of America is already a huge step for him and developing in the Continental league in Europe already means riding a lot of nice races. And there he will definitely have the leader role, which should let him improve in his character, which he thinks is important before going to a bigger team in a few years.

bontragercyclingteam.com/media/4661/BL_250x305_Jasper_DeBuyst_3.png

Last but not least Jasper De Buyst. He had a pretty invisible season so far and was mainly having helper tasks. Nothing that really convinced our managers to extend his contract. This came a bit surprising to me as we already heard that the Belgium bike producer Ridley will be a new co-sponsor next season. So the amount of Belgium was supposed to be 3-4 next season. But the managers haven`t seen that much talent in him and don`t think he can improve a lot although he is still pretty young. Must have been a tough decision and I wish him all the best that he soon announces a new team as he hasn`t found one yet.

So our team for next season definitely contains 9 riders at the moment although 3 of them have a PCT clause: Joe Dombrowski (PCT), Dale Parker (PCT), Lawson Craddock (PCT), Ryan Eastman, Gavin Mannion, Jasper Stuyven, Charlie Avis, Nathan Brown, Joshua Atkins.

I also made some new signings. But I have not yet decided if I make them public already. Some of them also just will ride for me if I get a PCT license, others will come to be even if I stay in the CT.

Can't understand why Boswell would want to join Bank BGZ Frown

Hi,

I just arrived in our team hotel after the 9th stage in Colombia. Time for me to do some mid-race résumé.
So far we as a team can be very happy with the shown performance. Joe entered the top10 and is looking pretty safe in there at the moment. Dale was giving us the wanted stage win and all 6 are still in the race.

Looking at myself it`s tough to say. I had very calm first few days, where I just tried to save energy. Highlight so far was surely my breakaway appearance on the 6th stage ending up 17th on a tough mountain stage. Unfortunately my other attempts so far didn`t work so I will still planning to try on the remaining stages.
So far I can`t complain here although it could work a bit better sometimes.

Coming to the last transfer news. It was quite a shot to hear that Ian won`t stay in our team. It was always fun to race with him. So it`s quite a pity. We had email contact just after the announcement and he told me the reasons. So I can understand him a bit although I might have gone a different way I guess.
So I am even more looking forward for the next races which we will have together.

I haven`t heard about any bigger signings yet and the team manager said, that it`s not really easy to plan as we might try to find a solution for the PCT/CT problem. As long as it`s not sure where we ride next year we might have to plan with two different rosters. One for the PCT where our leaders Joe, Dale and Lawson will stay with us plus some transfers that might help us. And one roster without these guys but with other transfers and the rest of us. So it might take some time until the real roster 2013 can be announced as we will have to wait for the final license for the next season.

At least one thing is for sure. We will get some more neo-pros next year as we will stay have the talent system where we try to make great riders out of unknown talents, that might ride for a big team in future.
Rumours are saying that we have at least 4 neo-pros in 2013, as far as I know from the United States. And actually funny to call them young talents or neo-pros as some of them might be older than I am.

In general I really trust our manager in this point and am pretty sure that we will have a strong squad for the next season, no matter the division.

See you soon,
Ryan

i haven't reported for a long time but I'm still following the story.
I have to say that the columbians are really strong but at least Dombrowski is in the top 10

Top ride from Dombo and Ryan on stage 6. Great win on stage 7, very well tactically raced. Good to see Domborowski in Top 10 too, hope he can keep that level up.

Shame Boswell seeing let go, but you kept a good care of your riders anyway so good job there. Looking forward to seeing what riders you've signed.
