National Tour Stage 7

Today's stage is the final flat day before the peloton enters the Pyrenees. There are two cat 2 climbs and a cat 4.

The Race

A three man group got away about 10 km into the race. The riders are: Dominique Rollin of Canada, Bob Jungels of Luxembourg, and Maxim Iglinsky of Kazakhstan.

At the first KOM sprint, Maxim Iglinsky took first and moved into the KOM lead. Meanwhile in the peloton, Fabian Cancellara has attacked out of the peloton and is coming across the gap to the trio of escapees.

At the second KOM sprint Iglinsky took first once again and will wear the polka-dot jersey tomorrow.

Bob Jungels took the intermediate sprint. When the peloton came through it was Cavendish, Greipel, Goss, and Kristoff.

At the third KOM sprint Spartacus took the single point available on the climb. The gap is down to 3 minutes.

At 20 km to go the gap is 1 30 and Iglinsky and Spartacus have left the other escapees.

9 km later the duo of leaders are caught. And the stage will end in a bunch sprint.

Under the Flamme Rouge it looks like the question is once again who will get second as Greipel is riding away from the rest.

National Tour Stage 8 Preview Show

Today's stage is a long trek into the Pyrenees of France, the first 150 kms are pan-flat, but the last 40 are uphill, with the HC Pailheres followed by the summit finish at Ax3 Domaines. It is expected that the big climbers will take over today and that we will know who is each country's GC candidate at the end of the day.

The Favorites

Chris Froome is the big favorite for the GC, as he is the best time-trialist of the climbers. His one weakness is his team, as the only climber of note on the team is Bradley Wiggins, who has had a terrible year.

A six man group got away after about 15 km the group included: Maxime Monfort of Belgium, Jeremy Roy of France, Fredrick Kessiakoff of Sweden, Mattias Frank of Switzerland, Tiago Machado of Portugal, and Jens Voigt of Germany.

Jens Voigt took the day’s sprint point unchallenged. 7 minutes later the peloton came across with Goss, Greipel, Boonen, Farrar, and Demare picking up points.

Our cameras couldn’t pick up the crash, but Tiago Machado crashed shortly after the sprint point and was forced to abandon with a fractured pelvis.

At the foot of the Pailheres climb, four men attack from the peloton: the Schleck brothers of Luxembourg, Rodriguez of Spain, and Jakob Fulgsang of Denmark. These four trail the breakaway by 3 minutes and lead the bunch by 30 seconds. They were brought back after about 5 kms by team Italy.

With 5 km to go on the climb the field has split and a 10 man group has formed with: Uran and Betancur of Columbia, Nibali of Italy, Contador, Rodreguiz, and Moreno of Spain, Froome of GBR, Niemiec and Majka of Poland, and Rolland of France. Missing from the group is Evans, Van Den Broeck, Hesjedal, the Dutchmen, and Quintana.

With 2 km to climb five men have broken away from the rest: its Nibali, Contador and Rodreguiz, Betancur, and Uran. One minute back Van Den Broeck has made a recovery and is coming across with Porte, Froome, and Hesjedal.

1 km to the summit and the Columbians have been dropped by the blistering pace of Nibali, as Frank tries to hang on to the top of the climb.
