Tour of the Gila | May 4th, 2013 | Tyrone (ITT): 25 kms - Flat |
If there is any question of Craddocks dominance of this tour, or of the Bontrager team in whole, today's ITT should put an end to the debate. Already proving to be the strongest team, time-trialing is perhaps the strongest quality the Bontrager team has. This should be a very dominating day (2 riders considered favorites, 2 more as outsider, 2 more as can't be underestimated).
The route isn't very flat, but the down and back starts and ends at the same elevation.
A horrible feeling for Jonathan Patrick McCarty (Bissell) who started the day in 2nd overall, but is feeling Craddock almost breathing down his neck as Lawson catches up to the rider he started two minutes after on the course.

The 4th day of the 5 day race in Italy would see a very hilly, perhaps even mountainous stage. Another day perfect for Balloni to strike and add more time into his lead, and with only a flat stage remaining a good day here should keep Balloni in the lead for good.
The BOTD is strong with 8 riders, though Stuyven is perfectly happy to just sit on the back and enjoy a free ride in the break. With his only objective to get the mountain points on the stage, he has no desire to help the others looking to win the stage. With that plan in mind, Bontrager also takes control of the Peloton with Antoine Duchesne and Alexandre Darville putting down a pace to keep the gap reasonable.
Jasper would have no problem getting to the top of the first climb on his own, as the others were a bit tired from pushing tempo for the BOTD, Jasper was able to use his energy to sprint to the top.
With the stage now entering its biggest climb Nathan Wilson takes over on the front for Bontrager and puts down a hard pace that drops many riders off the back of the field, and puts the Vini Fantini riders under pressure while Balloni and Pizzaballa wait for the time to strike. Wilson also catches and drops the BOTD execpt for Stuyven who he lets go free to the top of the Category 1 climb.
It was no real surprise when Balloni and Pizzaballa struck out and flew by Nathan Wilson. They would catch Stuyven just at the peak (and actually had to slow down for just a few seconds to let him get the KoM). Stuyven would be of no use to the two though as he was already gassed. Balloni would sail from that point picking up the win and more time over his competitors.

Like I said right now, both my squads are easily the best at their respective races. The next week will be much tougher when Stuyven leads a squad in the Rhône-Alpes Isère Tour (hills and mountains where he is a 58MO-66HL) and he will be my best (Wilson 64/62 may be better for the mountain) but still going to be weak.
Balloni/Craddock/Pizzaballa/Mannion will all be at the AToC but so will guys that are in the upper 70s from the bigger teams.

Tour of the Gila | May 5th, 2013 | Downtown Silver City Criterium: 66.7 kms - Flat |
The next to last stage of the Gila would be a flat Criterium, with a very fast pace. Ewan will get one last chance before the AToC to prove he can actually perform in a mass sprint, otherwise the team will have to consider other options.
With the team focusing on getting Ewan a true sprinting chance, no one from Bontrager joins the BOTD and the team is instead pulling for the peloton. Brown, Danial, Putt and O'Leary do a great job of keeping the BOTD close.
With the sprint trains ready to go, Ewan makes a great move and jumps on the back of the United Healthcare train, and gets the wheel of favorite Jake Keough.
Getting the proper wheel and then getting by it would be two entirely different challenges though as Ewan is never able to get enough speed to get around Keough and instead would have to settle for second staying right on his back. Still a great performance from Ewan who has otherwise struggled since his NC win in Australia.

Giro della Regione Friuli Venezia Giulia | May 6th, 2013 | San Daniele del Friuli – Moruzzo: 113.2 kms - Flat |
The final day for the Giro della Regione Friuli Venezia Giulia would be a fairly flat stage, and with the race well in the hands of Alfredo Balloni nothing exceptional is expected to happen. Bontrager will control the peloton and try and keep any breakaway close, and keep Balloni on his bike.
As expected Bontrager would be on the front of the peloton early in the race to keep anything from getting a chance. The work done by Stuyven, Oram, Darville, Duchesne, Wilson, Flaksis and Pizzaballa would be much appreciated by Balloni at the end of the day.
The final sprint would also go as expected with the very strong Vini Fantini team leading out a sprint so fast there actually was a break in the peloton about 25 riders back. Alfredo would be the only rider to stay with this move for Bontrager as he was already tucked into Rafael de Mattos Andriato's wheel. Andriato would go on to win the stage, just ahead of teammate Oscar Gatto.

The home race for Alfredo Balloni and Gabriele Pizzaballa would be terrific for both of them as they finish their tuning for the Amgen Tour of California. Balloni would dominate essentially every stage with a climb and even did decently well in the flatter stages with sprints. Jasper Stuyven did solid work as well getting the KoM, though only taking it from Balloni. The rest of the team worked tremendously together protecting Alfredo and putting some sting in the legs of everyone up the climbs. Gabriele Pizzaballa did a fantastic job being Balloni's lieutenant. And finishing 3rd overall himself. I can't imagine these guys could look much better going into the AToC.

Tour of the Gila | May 6th, 2013 | Gila Monster Road Race: 169.7 kms - Hilly |
The 5th and final stage of the Gila is rather hilly, with a significant category 1 climb late in the stage. A few minutes could be made or lost, so the race is still not certain, though Craddock remains the favorite not only for the overall win, but also for a stage win.
With the KoM not fully decided yet, Jasper Stuyven would make a move to take any early points, some would follow as the peloton chases down those wanting to get away.
Luis Enrique Davila (Jelly Belly) and teammate Ricardo Van der Velde would make a big attack, and push away from the field, they would rest in the BOTD for a few minutes before shattering the breakaway as well.
With teammate Ricardo Van der Velde completely exhausted from the category 1 climb, Davila continues on his own. In the distance Lawson Craddock crests the top as well and begins to chase Davila on his own. Gavin Mannion also comes across the top, but like Van der Velde he is spent at this point and cannot keep up.
Over the next 40 kilometers Craddock would slowly take back the 2 minute gap Davila had opened up. Davila would give everything, but would be caught just after the 1km to go banner, and Craddock would then win the final sprint between to two.

The Rhône-Alpes Isère Tour would serve as a race for the riders not going to the Amgen Tour of Californian to continue their work. The team goals are far more limited than the last few races, and simply being competitive in the objectives would be enough. We would like to have any rider wear any of the leader jerseys for at least one stage, though with the caliber of the riders here, this may not be possible.
The first stage offers some early mountain points for the breakaway, but then should finish with a mass sprint.
Nathan Wilson would get into the very large breakaway (12 riders) which would contest both of the KoM points, however Nathan would not be able to get any of the points. Bram De Kort (Jo Piels) would end up leading the KoM at the end of the day.
The mass sprint would be up to the larger French teams that are at the race, and Sojasun's Julien Simon would win the day with relative ease, followed by Adrien Petit (Cofidis) and Arnaud Gérard (Bretagne).

The second stage of the tour features some hills, and the first time the favored riders should have a chance to get some time, though the final part of the race is a fairly quick circuit run four times, the hill in the circuit is probably not substantial enough to create large time gaps.
A small breakaway of five riders would get to all three of the KoM points, with Nathan Wilson, Jaser Hamelink (Jo Piels), and Mark McNally (An Post) all seriously contending for the top spot. Wilson would get the better of the others over the last climb, and finish tied for first with Hamelink giving Bontrager control of the polka-dot jersey.
The finish would come down to which rider made the best move to get a little bit away from the peloton, which wasn't easy as Sojasun drove a hard pace up front. However in the end, Geoffroy Lequatre (Bretagne) would be able to get in front and win the stage, though Julien Simon would retain the yellow jersey with a 2nd place finish.
