Ouch. Tactically awfully ridden stage by us. We had like 6 riders up front with a few km to go, but weren't able to keep things together - and Bol once again was really bad at positioning. Zero-pointer for him, very disappointing.
At least Theuns was safe, but in hindisght I guess I shouldn't have sent Bol - Theuns could've been in the mix himself, given that Vermeersch with a similar skillset took 2nd place. Paprstka in the front group is fine as well, gives us some hopes of a minor GC result for him. Küng already gone is a bit disappointing though, maybe he'll join the break on S2 then. All in all, I guess Theuns needs an awesome S2 for us to reach our target with Bol being a total failure, but even if we don't, we had other races making up for that.
Congrats to Gazelle, guess that's just the kind of stages tailor-made for someone like Lander.
Thanks for the report to UU, pretty chaotic race but very well covered

Another good go, another 2nd place. Pedersen truly animated that race, almost like seeing the real life version. But probably a bit too much, a bit too early when you sum it up. Still another great result and great team work leading up to the "attack". Good ride also by Bohli and Stokbro afterwards to secure some depth points, as well as 2nd in the teams GC.
Big congrats to bbl. No doubt that Per was the strongest on that final sector. Great result for him and Carlsberg!

Congrats bbl, nice to see you with a better performance after a tough start to the season.
Solid ride by Polanc. Not as good as the recent classics but this was arguably one of the less suited races so still coming away with a top 10 is good enough for me. Neilands also solid with a 21st place.
A Big Thank You To All MG Reporters!

Fabianski was definitely spot on pre-race writing this could be a war of attrition on the final cobbled section. With that in mind, Anderberg's aggressiveness turned out to be very foolish, giving us minimal points compared to what we hoped for. However, can't fault him for trying, and I take it as a very encouraging sign that he was able to get a significant gap and hold it for a looong time, against a chasing peloton combined with a couple of attacks. I take it as a very good sign before the more "normal" flat cobbled classics.
Per timed his efforts on that final section perfectly. Launching latest of the favourites, thus also being superior and having by far the most energy for the longest time. Congratulations on the win, bbl! As that played out, I think you can safely take the first two cobbled races as unlucky daily forms for Per, I'd say. At least this was very, very dominant!
Thank you for the reports, UU! Enjoyed the action and racing, that's for sure. |

Teunissen is not strong enough to be racing this offensively all the time. Another failed attack that results in him finishing lower than he should. At least this time he didn't completely implode, but 13th is not good enough in this field.
Cool race though. Thanks for the great reports UU. And congrats bbl!

Congrats bbl for a much needed win! We'll happily take nearly 50 points in total from Daniels 16th place and some depth scoring.

Much better than the classics. A podium, despite that puncture, is the type of results we expect from Gerts in cobbled races.

Great result by Theuns, I'll happily take 7th on the day and 8th in GC! Really didn't expect him to finish so high up, but his "sit back and wait" strategy turned out to be the perfect one, allowing him to beat some stronger pure cobblers. Spending less energy on the hills surely also helped. A bit sad to see him drop quite some positions in the final kilometers, but looking at the riders who passed him, and considering that I always thought it would come down to an attrition race, his result is still better than expected.
Paprstka was solid in the end, and I'll happily take the additional foursome in the Top 100, allowing us to get just above 100 points here. It was a good race for us; with a podium by Bol on stage 1 it'd have been a great one, but I'm perfectly fine with the outcome.
Big congrats to Carlsberg, great redemption show by Per! I still have no clue why he did pretty bad in the first two classics, but this definitely was a great display of strength and should partly make up for his failures points-wise. Well done!
And Pedersen... he's just been really consistent this year, and I'm sure he'll get his wins. Pretty strong month already for Grieg, and Praha is yet to come (with another 2nd place by a Mads? )
Thanks for the report, Ulrich!

Okay, okay. I guess my tales of Per's demise were premature. Always feels a silly to whine about an underperformance when an overperformance is right around the corner (as is usually the case), and then have to embarrassingly take the congratulations later. Sorry for subjecting you all to that! Though I can't promise it won't happen again.
Obviously a perfect race for us in the end. And the difference today (besides Per's strength, Gerts flatting, and Pedersen going so early), was that the AI actually treated Per like the favorite he is. Our domestiques stayed around him in the peloton, we thinned down the group towards the end, and Per stayed near the front so he wouldn't be caught behind random splits or miss big attacks. And the result is that he's the best at the end of the race.
Points wise, I love it. Per gets a stage, GC, points, another podium. We also get some depth places, second in youth, third in teams. Really great showing. And 2 day stage races are always an outlier points haul because more points are available than an equivalent classic, so it's a good place to score big. Hopefully makes up a little of the early season disappointments, although PTHC points are lower.
That said, I'm a bit anxious still about whether the AI only treated Per well in stage 2 because he was already high on GC from stage 1. We'll see that hypothesis test again in future classics.
Thanks for the report!

Congrats bbl! Love to see Per doing well and answering some questions with conviction after the opening classics. Thanks for the great reports UU!
Vermeersch was very very good today, bonked towards the end as noted in the report but can't fault him when looking at his final GC while gaining a variety of minor points from the U25 win, 4th in points, 2nd on a stage, and overnight involvement in three categories. Sneakily the best leadership debut on our team this year compared to Manninen and Ganna, and just makes me even more excited for his long-awaited maxing in 2025!

Thank you for the nice reports, Ulrich.
Ulloa could be battling for a 20/25th positions in cobbled races, and it hurts to see 67 cobblers etc. finish top-20 whereas he barely scores a top-50 anywhere. So yeah, always the same in the cobbled races so far, can't say it's fun to look at.
Congratulations to bll, good to see Per perform finally. And nice to see Pedersen as 2nd again, perfect mix between scoring points and making sure you don't get any win bonuses you need to pay him extra during the off-season

We were always going to be here for the sprint stage only with good experiences in the past, and man was Steimle close to make the trip more than worth it....
I would've have been disappointed with a P6 there beforehand, but can't help but wonder now what a better timing could've meant for our points haul here.
Rutsch also again didn't manage to surprise me at all, at least beating Meiler who we replaced with him would've been nice.
Speaking of Meiler, congrats bbl! A solid win to make up for the less enjoyable races prior. Thank you UU.
Hey! Apologies for my absence!
Between being busy and basically constantly sick, I feel behind schedule to follow the early races live, and then my ADHD ass kicked in and faltered under that ever-growing backlog again.
I'm back for the Giro and hopefully everything after, and I want to reiterate I'm still very much committed to this game long-term if you want me around.
Happy New Year!
