That was an outstanding report, very nice to read trek. And congrats to knockout! Love to see a well executed lead out; it gives me hope for my convoluted train.
It seems this race was well simulated on the PCM AI front, that's at least four in a row including the Gisborne GP, Almaty, Paris-Nice. Obviously the Strade Bianche was disappointing. In fact, the major problems seem to be mostly apparent on the cobbles; but there's another opportunity at GP Herning for the AI to sort its life out next.
Essentially, there doesn't seem to be as much of an issue - to a naïve, excited rookie - as some are making it out to be.

Whoa, Borges going at it again! Thanks, guys. I always thought he'd be useful but this is surely unexpected.
Anyway congratulations knockout. You had the perfect set up in the final kilometers and your guys simply delivered. Spotify had a very similar situation, but with Ahlstrand lagging behind they just lost the plot.
And thanks for all your work trekbmc, for your high-quality preview and report!

Wow what a report. May be my hangover but some real intense reading there. Gratz to knockout. Nice by Hermans to attack but I am disappointed that our results dont match the effort. Just way down in the sheets but thats what you get when the hills get drilled

1. Trek, that report was magical. Loved the the dedication to the detail, especially f.e. the Pozzato part. A,azing work.
2. Congrats to Evonik! What a well deserved victory. Tactics played out as planned you'd say
3. What a race for puncheurs this time. Told a couple of times that Borges is one of my favourite riders in the peloton, this year he absolutely shows why.
4. You can't give this to van Stayen that easily. Maybe the race organisation would've been better of with inviting a certain Slovenian Star that had MSR #1 on his priority list

Bruno Borges is on a mission to become the best performing "crap" rider in the peloton.
10th is obviously good enough for us, but too bad that Coppel destroyed his own aswell as Coquards chances for some minor points. Ohh well, we can't have it all. Losing more points to Moser was evident here, but we didn't lose as much as feared.

Definitely not a bad a race at all points wise.
But I was hoping Grosu will be able to make into the final group and sprint for the top places given he was fourth last year and this race was a top 3 goal this year for my team, but in the end I'll have to be happy with the points Vermeltfoort, Boswell and Lammertink got. The last one seems to love this race given how he was 20th last year and now 16th

Awesome report trek! The racing was very exciting and you covered everything perfectly
Congrats to knockout for the win! It seems that i was not right in my prediction
3 years later, Bewley loses a monument
Some surprising results with Borges so high and the top20 full of puncheurs, with only a couple of sprinters on it

Fair enough. Congrats knockout! We'll be back next year, enjoy today.
Great race plan, sadly again an underwhelming sprint not being in the right wheel and not having enough punch left after doing the right thing on the hills.
However, I much prefer this to a passive race hiding in the peloton and then being involved in crashes or splits. It looked like a real MSR with every rider type trying to play it to their strengths.
I'm not entirely sure yet how to move forward, considering the game brought out the puncheur side of him here already. Does more HIL give him enough energy to both attack and sprint, or is more pure SPR needed to get the result in the end...
It's always a bit tough to judge these races when a little bit more could've gotten you your dream result, but if you're coming from 38th place last year and see many favorites cracking and going home with just the finishing points, what is there to complain really. This race had the potential to ruin my day and the whole next week together with it, so I'm relieved we got something out of it.
This was always going to be our most volatile season goal, so I guess missing out by three spots is fine. (assuming the old goals system is still in place..)
Additionally, as I hoped for, we really played our depth well with good positioning throughout the race as the only team with four riders on the same time as the winner.
Sadly the Poggio was too much for Kelderman (??) and Lander (good job regardless), but it's great to see them finishing in the first group in the end as well as a mostly invisible Herklotz justifying his selection here.
While it made for a great photo opportunity, Demare leading on the Poggio ended up hurting the team overall with both Herklotz and Kelderman surely able to finish in the Top 15 had they hung on. But again, that's how he had to play his cards, no hard feelings.
Last but absolutely not least, what a report to go with that outstanding preview! Not a single complaint from my side about even just the slightest of things there.
Very worthy of the occasion, an outstanding piece of reporting. Thank you very much trek!

Great report trek, thanks. Roelandts hid away most of the race just to pop up in the sprint, very pleased with a podium, especially ahead of Bewley. Enjoy the win knockout.

Well, 3rd place is not bad, you can't expect to win every race, and especially San Remo is the hardest race to win for Bewley. But still, it is a failed goal for my team. A bigger dissapointment I have is with Sagan, 30th place is way lower than expected. My hope here was he could lead-out Bewley, but if he even wasn't in that final group...
In any case congrats to Evonik, a really nice win for you, knockout! And thanks for a nice report as well, trek!

This is frickin awesome
1. Brilliant AI for once. Was quite nice to see all those attacks along the way forcing the sprinters to struggle. Is this really the same game that produce the racing in the other February races? Definitely a MG Race of the Year contender!
2. Awesome race report. I was screaming and shouting during the report as the race was going on. You've got me so invested into the race..!
3. Evonik continues to be the monument team. 6th monument, 5th podium and finally the first monument victory
4. Michael Van Stayen redeems himself after a very disappointing start to the season.
5. During the report I thought that it might have been a mistake to leave Skujins out of the team selection. Turns out it was a great decision in the end
6. Perfect execution of my intented strategy. Chasing attacks with Dzamastagic, Smirnovs and Dakteris and having GVA to lead out Can Stayen was perfect. When was the last time that we've got a good leadout in MSR?
7. Greg Van Avermaet finishing 11th and Dakteris also inside top 30 is good and adds more points. Much needed after the weak start of the season
Thanks everyone for your kind words

7th for Bellis is a fantastic result, likely to be the best he does all season - so great for it to happen in a Monument. Thanks as well for a superb report, and congrats to Knockout! |

Olala, went for a weekend trip, so missed out on the preview, and when I'm back, there's a monument posted
First: That was an amazing report, trekbmc! And also a preview worthy a monument with such depth.
And what a race that was! A proper Milano - Sanremo, that's for sure. Kristoff did everything right, but unfortunately he just wasn't strong enough to hold on. Would have been great to have had Holst Enger up there fighting to hold on as well, as his slightly better hill stat maybe could have made a difference, but that unfortunate crash gave no chance for such.
Loved to see the rouleurs give it their best, with especially Coppel and Ignatiev showing how it can be done, but clearly Evonik and a couple of other teams were on a mission to bring it together.
Huge congratulations to knockout. That was an outstanding team performance, with GVA serving as the perfect team mate for a monument win.
Also cool to see Demare, Borges, Houle and Bellis up there. Not your usual suspects, but they all got the tools to do well. And obviously the former has the tools to win this race one day, as he proved it on the Poggio.
Thank you again for the great entertainment and excitement the report brought, trekbmc! |

Great race with a deserved winner. Having GVA as leadout for a monster like Van Stayen is amazing in MSR.
Guess we should be happy with 12th and 17th as many of the other pure puncheurs got even less. This edition was for the sprint/puncheur hybrid riders.
Thanks for reporting, trek. Very well done!

Very well pleased with the racing here. Several attacks and Ponzi being involved in most of the moves is great!
Was a goal race this but never expected to finish on podium with Ponzi here so thats fine. Congratz to Knockout, hardly any more deserving winner than Van Stayen here.
And finally thanks for a fantastic report aswell Trek, surely monument worthy this!

From the point of view of a reporter, I must say that I was stunned by how PCM handled that race, the AI was aggressive in a way I haven't seen before with attacks from many barodeurs before and between the climbs as well as Ponzi going for it on the Cipressa, Demare killing it on the Poggio and at the end of the race the best small bunch sprint I've ever seen with GVA leading out MVS, with even the best sprinters outperforming the best positioned, which is weirdly rare in small-group sprints.
Imo, the only flaws really were puncheurs being surprisingly dropped on the climb and sprinters (like Swift) being really poorly positioned, however you could argue that the speed of the race was the cause of those collapses, as especially riders like Dzamastagic, Ponzi and Coppel all being willing to set the pace made for a very fast peloton, of course as well the Spotify dilemma was poor, but understandable.
Overall, seems like PCM wanted to finally make up for all those bad races this month with great AI in the finale, especially towards the punchy sprinters, who had arguably been shorted the most.

Great report. Though your Festina bikes look like you haven`t properly installed the PCM.Daily EP Pack.
I'm really not sure what's going on with them, as everything was fine last season and this season only Festina bikes have an issue, which I can't work out how to fix, with every other team fine.

Well that really didn't go well. Van der Lijke injured in the biggest race of the season, and Gastauer dropped rather than animating the race like some of the other puncheurs.
With the great way in which the race played out, both could well have been in the mix, so that is a shame.
Thanks for the report trek.
