18th Birthday

Happy birthday to me,
Happy birthday to me,
Happy birthday to me-eee,
Happy birthday to me.

Yay, I turn 18 today. Despite now being 18 I don’t think my teammates will stop calling me the kid though. Unfortunately I don’t get much chance to celebrate because the teams flying to Italy today for a training camp. I am very excited about the training camp because it will give me a chance to test myself against the rest of my team (and hopefully beat some of them). That’s all I have time to say because I have to go and pack. I will give you a training camp update soon.

Good luck at the training camp.

Thinking about it, why is Mullen there? Aren't you playing in 2014? Shouldn't he be at An Post then?

Yes he should. Smile
Abd one more thing, IG-Sigma Sport disbanded after season 2013. Smile

Just to make this clear - The current season is 2013. I typed in the wrong year when writing it out Smile

Hope you learn a lot from your new team mates in the training camp in Italy Smile

Training Camp

My first training camp wasn’t as nice as I had hoped. Firstly the weather was awful meaning we had to do 6-8 hours a day in the pouring rain. Secondly we had to get up really early to fit in the 6-8 hours of riding. Thirdly I found it quite difficult to stay with the group when we were all riding together. Fourthly we were made to put in lots of massive efforts up climbs which made it really hard to recover after each day.

The bad conditions didn’t really allow for many photos to be taken so I only have a couple to show you.

Here we are riding as a group at an easy pace (one of the few times I wasn’t struggling).

Here I am putting in an effort up one of the many climbs

Next up for me is to head home for a few days of hard training that is needed if I am going to be ready for the first race of the season, the Beverbeek Classic on the 23rd February.

The Beverbeek Classic was the biggest race of my career so far although I had a very simple job, to protect team leader Matt Cronshaw. The teams plan was simple. Get in the break with either Perrett or Griffiths and then if the break was brought back set up a sprint for Cronshaw.

i1032.photobucket.com/albums/a410/matthew21rp/Peng%20Xiu/2014%20Races/Beverbeek%20Classic/Break_zps95b6d9fb.jpg

It started well when Griffiths made it into the early break. It was never going to work though and they got brought back easily with 30 km to go.

i1032.photobucket.com/albums/a410/matthew21rp/Peng%20Xiu/2014%20Races/Beverbeek%20Classic/Protect_zpsfabf49ae.jpg

I spent the whole day protecting Cronshaw at the front of the peloton to avoid crashes because of the rain. The weather today was even worse than the training camp although I think I enjoyed today more.

i1032.photobucket.com/albums/a410/matthew21rp/Peng%20Xiu/2014%20Races/Beverbeek%20Classic/SlippingBack_zps26913a90.jpg

With 15km to go my job was done as the team started to prepare for the sprint. I was very lucky as when I was slipping back through the pack there was a crash just behind me which I managed to avoid.

i1032.photobucket.com/albums/a410/matthew21rp/Peng%20Xiu/2014%20Races/Beverbeek%20Classic/LeadingOut_zps83cc5e1e.jpg

With 3km to go the team was at the front of the pack and it was looking good.

i1032.photobucket.com/albums/a410/matthew21rp/Peng%20Xiu/2014%20Races/Beverbeek%20Classic/Finish_zps38d31824.jpg

Unfortunately Cronshaw didn’t have the sprint and he dropped down to 5th as Benjamin Giraud took the win.

I am very pleased with my first race. I am most pleased that I managed to stay in the peloton throughout the whole stage. My fitness has certainly improved since the training camp, although it isn’t quite up to the level I would hope for. Next up for me is the GP Ville de Lillers – Souvenir Bruno Comini on the 3rd March. It is a while till then so I will give you a training update between now and then.

Training Update

It’s been a good few days for me. Training has been going great and I’ve been setting new best times on my local hills. Also my teammate Ryan Mullen has leant me his old TT bike. It’s a Boardman Air. I have been out testing it and it will certainly be better than riding a road bike in time trials. Oh, and also the weather has been better which is a bonus.

i1032.photobucket.com/albums/a410/matthew21rp/Peng%20Xiu/Random/Training/JakeHales_zpsd0c2a132.jpg

I spent lots of time training with my new best friend Jake Hales who has really made me feel welcome at IG-Sigma Sport. It certainly makes the time go faster riding with someone else.

i1032.photobucket.com/albums/a410/matthew21rp/Peng%20Xiu/Random/Training/Newhillbest_zps972a91e3.jpg

Here I am on my way to beating my best time up one of my local hills.

i1032.photobucket.com/albums/a410/matthew21rp/Peng%20Xiu/Random/Training/NewTTFar_zpsf918f441.jpg

Testing out my new TT bike was one of the best experiences of my life. It certainly made me go a lot quicker.

i1032.photobucket.com/albums/a410/matthew21rp/Peng%20Xiu/Random/Training/NewTTClose_zps9909cd58.jpg

A closer look at my new TT bike. Unfortunately I haven’t got the TT helmet to match yet but I’m sure I’ll get one soon.

Hopefully I will now be ready to put in a good performance at my next race the GP Ville de Lillers – Souvenir Bruno Comini. Although it’s a flat race I still hope I can do a good job for the team.

Until Then

GP Ville de Lillers – Souvenir Bruno Comini

I was given the same job for the GP Ville de Lillers – Souvenir Bruno Comini as I was for the Beverbeek Classic. Protect Matt Cronshaw while two of our other riders (Hawkins and Greenwood) would try and get in the break.

i1032.photobucket.com/albums/a410/matthew21rp/Peng%20Xiu/2014%20Races/GP%20Ville%20de%20Lillers_Souvenir%20Bruno%20Comini/Break_zps4df1979d.jpg

Hawkins managed to get into the early breakaway and the weather was good. A great start to the day.

i1032.photobucket.com/albums/a410/matthew21rp/Peng%20Xiu/2014%20Races/GP%20Ville%20de%20Lillers_Souvenir%20Bruno%20Comini/Protect_zps10df9c0f.jpg

I did a good job today protecting Cronshaw and felt quite strong. I’m not sure how useful I am though because of how small I am.

i1032.photobucket.com/albums/a410/matthew21rp/Peng%20Xiu/2014%20Races/GP%20Ville%20de%20Lillers_Souvenir%20Bruno%20Comini/FeelingStrong_zpsdaa7b282.jpg

With 15km to go when Cronshaw told me my job was done I still wanted to do more, so I asked if I could help with the leadout and I managed to pull on the front for a couple of Kilometres. On my left you can see Hawkins being brought back in (The break never had a hope).

i1032.photobucket.com/albums/a410/matthew21rp/Peng%20Xiu/2014%20Races/GP%20Ville%20de%20Lillers_Souvenir%20Bruno%20Comini/JobDone_zpsb41c9406.jpg

With 10km to go I moved off the front and left the job to my teammates.

i1032.photobucket.com/albums/a410/matthew21rp/Peng%20Xiu/2014%20Races/GP%20Ville%20de%20Lillers_Souvenir%20Bruno%20Comini/GreatLeadout_zps199046f8.jpg

The teams train was so good the Greenwood and Cronshaw managed to create a gap.

i1032.photobucket.com/albums/a410/matthew21rp/Peng%20Xiu/2014%20Races/GP%20Ville%20de%20Lillers_Souvenir%20Bruno%20Comini/Winner_zpsdc5a46cf.jpg

Unfortunately again Cronshaw didn’t have the sprint and the top sprinters came flying past him. Credit to the Frenchman Yannick Martinez who came from miles back to take the victory while Cronshaw came in 8th.
I rolled in with a large group 1’31 down on Martinez. As I crossed the line I saw Martinez celebrating with his teammates and I was rather disappointed my efforts weren’t rewarded.

Another good race for me. Hopefully I’m earning the chance to try and get in the breakaway in a future race. At the moment I’m happy with being a domestique and hope that Cronshaw will deliver soon. Next up is another flat classic Kattekoers. It has a couple of cobbled sections so I’ll be interested to see how I ride on cobbles.

Until then

After my good performances as a domestique recently I have been given a free role for Kattekoers. Both Peter Hawkins and I were told to try and get into the break. We were also told that if we both got into the break I would have to work for Hawkins In the closing stages.

i1032.photobucket.com/albums/a410/matthew21rp/Peng%20Xiu/2014%20Races/Kattekoers/Attack_zps847e48d9.jpg

With Hawkins already up the rode In the break and the peloton letting them get away I sensed a good chance for the team to get into a strong position. I launched a powerful attack and tried to bridge the gap.

i1032.photobucket.com/albums/a410/matthew21rp/Peng%20Xiu/2014%20Races/Kattekoers/Bridging_zps7234eb11.jpg

It took me a long time to get across the 2 minute gap but I managed it and started to settle down into the relays.

i1032.photobucket.com/albums/a410/matthew21rp/Peng%20Xiu/2014%20Races/Kattekoers/OthersBreaking_zpsf6f67c5c.jpg

Just before the first cobbled section some riders started attacking. Quickly our lead decreased from 5 minutes to 2 minutes.

i1032.photobucket.com/albums/a410/matthew21rp/Peng%20Xiu/2014%20Races/Kattekoers/Cobbles1_zps3a2ad5aa.jpg

I was feeling strong and lead our group over the first cobbled section. I don’t think he’ll like me saying this but I think I was stronger than Hawkins.

i1032.photobucket.com/albums/a410/matthew21rp/Peng%20Xiu/2014%20Races/Kattekoers/More_zps2e951cde.jpg

With 60km to go a group of 6 favourites bridged across the gap. The group now had 16 riders and was very strong.

i1032.photobucket.com/albums/a410/matthew21rp/Peng%20Xiu/2014%20Races/Kattekoers/Cobbles2_zps6c263c41.jpg

I started to struggle from the pace some of the favourites were setting so Hawkins told me my final job would be to keep him in a good position leading into the 2nd cobbled section. I carried out the job perfectly and put Hawkins into a great position at the bottom of the cobbled climb.

i1032.photobucket.com/albums/a410/matthew21rp/Peng%20Xiu/2014%20Races/Kattekoers/JobDone_zps44fdf492.jpg

Job done. I had enjoyed my time in the lead group but I had really started to struggle once the favourites had joined us.

i1032.photobucket.com/albums/a410/matthew21rp/Peng%20Xiu/2014%20Races/Kattekoers/CronshawBreaking_zps60648125.jpg

With about 25km to go it had looked as if the break was going to be brought back in and Cronshaw would have a good chance of winning the sprint in the peloton of about 50 riders. But with about 20km to go some favourites attacked and the pace in the peloton decreased. Cronshaw moved onto Greenwood’s wheel who then set a blistering pace. The two of them started to create a gap and started closing down on the leading groups.

i1032.photobucket.com/albums/a410/matthew21rp/Peng%20Xiu/2014%20Races/Kattekoers/HawkinsAttacking_zps465d8526.jpg

With 5km to go it became clear that the break was going to make it all the way to the finish. Knowing he wasn’t the best sprinter in the lead group Hawkins attacked with 4km to go. Meanwhile Cronshaw had cracked and settled into the 3rd group.

i1032.photobucket.com/albums/a410/matthew21rp/Peng%20Xiu/2014%20Races/Kattekoers/McNally_zps47518f7e.jpg

Unfortunately Hawkins dragged McNally of An Post with him. McNally then passed Hawkins who jumped onto McNally's wheel. It looked as if McNally was going to win but then Hawkins found another kick but it didn’t look as if he had enough to beat McNally.

i1032.photobucket.com/albums/a410/matthew21rp/Peng%20Xiu/2014%20Races/Kattekoers/CloseFinish_zps8b2286f2.jpg

I’ll let you decide who you think won and I will tell you the result next time. I can tell you though that Cronshaw came 14th and Greenwood came 24th. Oh and I came an amazing 82nd.

Kattekoers

I crossed the finish line in a big group over 10 minutes down, got off my bike and suddenly I received a massive hug from Peter Hawkins. What happened? I asked. I won Peter said excitedly. I must say I never realised how good the feeling of knowing you had helped someone win would be. Then the team got told to go round to the podium area. I didn’t understand why. It was only Hawkins who had won. We were told we had won the team competition. I was about to make my first trip to the podium. Although my individual performance wasn’t spectacular I started to feel like I really belonged in the world of cycling.
