The opening stage of the race takes place around the city of Napoli. It is 155km including 1 major climb per lap. There are two Cat.4 climbs to contest as well as two IS's. The day should finish in a mass sprint.

Favorites: Cavendish, Goss, Degenkolb

Team Plan: Get a man in the break, preferably either Proni or Taborre. For the finish either Chicchi or Gatto depending on whether Chicchi handles the hills.

Comment
I'll be honest, that was played on Medium. I wanted to get a feel for how that would work... and clearly i will now be on Hard or Extreme. As a result i won't count this as part of the challenge, but i will keep it as the first stage.
Taborre put in a good ride, managed the effort well, and did a good job grabbing the KoM Jersey. The rest of the team spent a good day in the peloton.
Next up is the TTT. At least we now can't be overtaken, but we will almost certainly finish last by several minutes...

I was thinking that during the report. Nevertheless, a great result here. But now your team has the burden of the jersey, don't underestimate that Wink

Today is a 17.3km Team Time Trial. This is the first GC battle day over a rolling and technical course on the island of Ichia just off the coast. The seconds gained today could decide the race in 3 weeks.

Favorites: Sky Procycling, Garmin-Sharp, Blanco Pro Cycling

Team Plan: We stand no hope today. So its minimize losses as possible and save energy for the future.

The Stage

Vacansoleil were the first team off today. They had no real chance today, and duly finished in 19th

Bardini followed them. Like us they have no real specialists, but did just scrape inside the minute mark at the end, in 21st place
i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k587/Average_Man/chasing%20legends/PCM0001-3_zps9c2416da.jpg

Bardini spent a day in pain

Lotto have a couple of specialists in the squad, and surprised many by ending the day up in 11th, less than 30" down

Saxo Bank have a squad with several specialists and were considered outsiders. They set a great time holding the lead for a long time, before finishing 6th

Katusha as had an outside shot today. They stayed under the radar and poped up in 8th place at the finish

RadioShack had potential for such a route. However they never seemed to settle and finished a disappointing 13th

Cannondale formerly Liquigas consist of sprinters and climbers. They struggled through to end in 17th

Blanco were the first of the favorites. They matched Saxo Bank at the check and pushed on to finish the day in 3rd

Movistar rode a low key day. Lead mostly by Dowsett they held shape and looked good, if only ending in 12th

Euskaltel are another team with out TT power. Known as climbers the team duly met expectations down in 14th

AG2R have several climbers and harbor some decent ambitions. Those jersey hopes remain alive having finished well in 16th

Lampre were the next home team off. Scarponi's team really pulled themselves inside out to end the day in 4th place!
i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k587/Average_Man/chasing%20legends/PCM0003-4_zpsa10923ee.jpg

The boys in Pink can keep dreaming of pink

BMC knocked a couple of seconds off of Saxo Banks still standing mid point time. They preceded to keep the pace up setting the days 2nd best time

Orica had real hope for the day. They matched Blanco's times all stage long, but finished behind them in 5th

Androni like us and Bardini just wanted this day done. However they were the shock of the day finishing 10th!

Astana host home favorite Nibali. His fight for pink took a slight knock today, as they only managed 9th place behind all their main rivals
i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k587/Average_Man/chasing%20legends/PCM0004-2_zps5515b1b3.jpg

Nibali pushes hard, but falls short

FDJ take the day as it comes. No real hopes beyond a stage at some point leads them home into 15th

Argos looking for stage's through Degenkolb did not have a great day ending it up well down in 18th place

Garmin set out to defend Hesjedals title. They won this stage last year, but in 2013 they managed 7th. Not good, but not bad

Quickstep had hopes of getting the win today. A well drilled team, but something just went wrong as they ended in 20th!

Sky blasted out of the start. They powered hard all day setting best times all over the place and comfortably won the stage

Vini Fantini hold the Maglia Rosa. But with zero specialists it was survival mode. +43" at the intermediate check things got worse in the second half, as the team finished a gallant 22nd

I hope Cyanide fix the TTT's for PCM13... 1'43 is a huge amount to loose and is really going to make that Top10 a fight. Anyway still hold Points and KoM, and on with the breakaways!

Yeah, sim would've been the best option.
As Luigi said, it's going to be very hard to get Danny out of Pink, for everyone Pfft
Still holding 2 jerseys though(not that it was possible to lose them, but still) Wink

@SSJ2
Clearly he was just being kind on stage 1, letting us get some glory first

@Selwink
That would be the easier option, but this isn't supposed to be easy!

@Jesl
2 is good. We'll probably loose both on Stage 3 though. Pate will probably get bored tomorrow and go do some Trials biking or something to lose the jersey

Stage 3: Sorrento - Marina di Ascea

Preview

images2.gazzettaobjects.it/Giroditalia/2013/images/tappa/tappa_dettagli_tecnici_altimetria_03.jpg

The first hilly stage of the race. A flat opening three quarters will be soon forgotten over the two big climbs. Both are ranked as Cat.2's and will cause some sort of selection for certain. There are also two IS's today as usual.

Favorites: Nibali, Hesjedal, Evans

Team Plan: Man in break then hope Santambrogio can make the selection at the end.

The Stage

210km to go - The riders set out from Sorrento on a ling day

209km - Wynants is first to attack today, swiftly countered by Pirazzi, Rabottini, Sarmiento, Golas and Oss

206km - Brutt, Popovych and Felline bridge the gap forming a large leading group

195km - Oss leads an in-group attack with Wynants, Sarmiento and Rabottini

Trying to get clear on the coast

186km - Now Bak, Majka and Valls want to get away and join the two leading groups

179km - But Lampre and Sky pull the groups back. And instantly Roux attacks!

Breaking away

177km - Taborre goes to join Roux upfront

176km - Battaglin and Pauwels team up to get to the break

166km - De Kort is the last man to get across to the move, and the quintet heads off down the road

Comment
Horrible day... Taborre couldn't challenge for anything, the team suffered over every climb. Mauro even lost time attacking downhill. Just a horrible day. The only upside is that we should wear the KoM tomorrow even if we don't lead it. Lets hope the mountain is kinder than the hill.

Bad day for the team. I expected at least Santambrogio to be able to follow the pace...
