Getting a bike
Levi4life
Go to a bike shop, ask them to tell you what size bike you need. Once you establish what size you need, then look around. Neuvation has bikes for reasonable prices, although since your budget is so small your options are very limited. Specialized Allez, Trek 1 series, if you want name brand, and there are a million smaller companies that are cheaper because they aren't big. Building a bike from the ground up is deceptively expensive. Unless you know what you are doing and have sources for parts for cheap, you can sink a lot of money into it. Bike shops are your best bet for your first. Make some friends in your area to help you get started. Maybe they can hook you up, be wary of bike shop employees though. They are always out to sell something.

Do you think a no name bike that comes with shimano gears would be a decent buy for someone like myself?

CrueTrue
Well, "Shimano gears" is a broad word. Avoid Shimano Sora, go for at least Tiagra, preferably Shimano 105.

I think it is a good place to start. You have to get the proper size though. If you can't get the right size look for something else.

To be honest,

The way I see it is if your a recreational cyclist or even doing small races, it doesnt matter. I have a Trek 1000 with near baseline components, almost no proper gear (aside from shoes and a nice helmet) and it works out fine, and to be honest I've had very few problems with it. So in all honesty, it's more the cyclist than the bike at the recreational level. If you do well your bike will too. So it doesn't really matter the exact quality of the bike. Just something that will work and last.

((And yes I have won one race with the bike))
