This discussion would be better to read if 50% of posts were not nationalistic bullshit and anti-nationalistic bullshit. I wonder if World cup is for some in fact the new World War
I see how some people need someone to root for in a sport. I'm more of a guy who can enjoy the sport in itself. I count myself lucky that way. In cycling I can be happy with about any winner, for example
Spares you a lot of damnation because if you only root for one team/rider, you end up losing a lot!
I'm still in shock about that game (USA v Belgium) it's just heartbreaking
by the way, wondolowski (Wondo) plays for the San jose Earthqukes and their stadium is 10 minutes away from my house so I've seen him on many ocasions. wondo woud have burried it into the back of the net 49/50 times
but i guess that was the 50th one
But, Let's not forget that Wondo is one of the best players in the MLS and plays extreamly smart, he times his run very well and is very smart without the ball. Guys like Altidore use their speed and athletisizm to make runs and go to the ball. Despite not being one of the most physically talented players on the field, Wondo is able to put himsef into great posistions.
By the way to anyone who says "Donovan would have made that" that is 100% wrong. I mean if he was in that position, yes he might have, but Landon plays like a mid fielder now, he doesnt look to attack, he just goes to the ball and is there just in case the payer on the ball gets in trouble. (If you dont believe me, go watch the last 10 mls game donovan has played in)
all that said, Wondo should have made it,but he didnt, and the USA are going home.
The announcers said that the assistant ref had already called offside on that opportunity (even though it wasn't) is there any true to that?
If it was called offside and we scored... I can't even imagine what would have happened. WWIII probably. So, actually think that it would have been worse for the USA moral if they had scored that and it was disallowed.

Yes, the assistant referee made a wrong offside call then but the main referee doesn't have to follow it, so we can only speculate.
But not scoring on such an occasion is as bad as having a wrong offside call on such an occasion.

According to some he had raised the flag afterwards to signal the goal kick. Who knows.
If it went in and indeed it was offside, then Klinsmann would have a way to dig himself a way out. Algerian ref and all

Lol at people boycotting the tournament after elimination. Nothing wrong with it at all, but spare a thought for poor football-mad Scotland, worlds joint-oldest football nat team, consistently a top 25 fifa team, but not made the WC or Euros since 1998, when I was 3!
Actually I dont mind this so much cause it allows for a more full enjoyment of the tournament itself, but it would be great when the return finally happens. I wonder if there are other small nations with a big football culture and high fifa rankings that suffer from this curse...?
Edit: i can see belgium had a 12 year drought before this year, that must have been a pain. Hungary have a very rich footballing history but have not reached a major tournament since 1986... Although on the other hand, their national team has not reached the top 32 of fifa rankings since they were established in 1993, save for a brief spell in '11/12 - so they cant complain too much! South american teams surely have a tough time for WC qualifying in general, although i cant name examples.

Boycotting the WC? I'm not protesting anything, i'm just not interested in watching teams I don't like..
RIP Exxon Duke, David Veilleux, Double Feature, and Monster Energy
And just out of curiosity, what makes you not like the teams remaining in the tournament?

Well at least you have an ok chance for Euro's with 2 automatically qualifying now and 3rd place in playoffs. Bet Sco and Ireland were fuming as one of those will likely miss out. As Poland and and even bigger team in in You're group. I'd love Scotland their they offer so much to football but just don't produce good players anymore do they.

My word choice was a bit hyberbolic No problem with the situation, i just find it somewhat humorous/ironic compared to scotlands woes!
Still, its taught me that lessening loyalty & patriotism in entertainement/sports can often offer a deeper, more dynamic and personalised experience.
@atlanta Yep, recent pool of players always seems to be just bellow the required ability. 24 team rule is hopefully a saving grace for sure!

mostly no reason to like them so I dislike them (Colombia, France, Belgium, Costa Rica), not liking the teams some of the players play for (Messi, Neymar). the public being hypocrits (The Netherlands).
what makes me like a team is if one of the players has played for my favorite team (Romero , Moreno , Altidore & Johannson ). being Germany
